Woo hoo, finally a coming K-drama I’m wildly excited about. Scheduling on tvN has confirmed that romance K-drama Is It Coincidence will be airing next month on July 22, 2024. It’s a high school to years later second chance romance starring Kim So Hyun and Chae Jong Hyeob that is based on a webtoon. And like the recent two year trend of shorter K-dramas, it’s slated to be 8-episodes. These two stars are both ones I love and it would be fantastic if they got a hit together and for us viewers to have a well-made and well-acted drama to watch this summer.

Wasn't actually July 15? I have been waiting this for 2yrs already. I remember this was announced before My lovely liar but somehow that was released before than this. I really thought we will never be able to watch this. I am happy that we are finally gonna get this. Friends to lovers trope might be my favourite. It's quite bummer that it's only 8epi though. Really excited to see their chemistry. Hope we will get a teaser soon.
It’s been postponed to 22nd July and the official English title is : Serendipity’s Embrace. The premise sounds sooooo cute and 8 episodes is just the right length for a romcom these days. We can all do without serial killers in romcom. Just give us pure fluff and sweetness. While I’m not expecting much in terms of ratings considering it’s a Mon-Tue drama and the Olympics airing alongside. Anyways can’t wait for the first teaser to finally drop.
But whyy? I cannot wait any longer tbvh. Even I am also not a fan of 16epi format but I was at least expecting 10 or 12 episodes. I guess something is better than nothing.
I didn't realis it's only 8 episodes. Sounds like it they were aiming for streaming rather than a Tv broadcast.
@Sunny Yeah I think so too. Speaking of streaming, does anyone know if any streaming site will pick this drama up?
@Commenter
They don’t have a streaming platform yet but most likely it would be Viu/Viki and UNext for Japan. We should know in another week or so.
Not expect much, just hope to see great acting with stabil script that can make me excited everytime Monday come 🥰
It's so weird the production of this drama took so much time to find a channel to air it. It's not like the actors were strangers or rookie.
I'm excited to watch a cute romance!
It’s not strange. Many dramas produced between 2021-2023 still haven’t found a network. This includes Ask The Stars with mega stars LMH and GHJ. Blackout featuring BYH also struggled to find a channel until recently. This is the new normal. Coupang Play also postponed the airing of the new LSY and Kentaro Sakguchi drama due to lack of investments. It’s happening to everyone because investors are backing out and not wiling to pour money into romance dramas like they used to. This drama was always a TVN drama and would eventually have aired on their channel only. It got pulled forward because of the issues with the GYJ drama.
But for LHM and GHJ's drama, the production wanted more money but they could easily have found a network.
For me, 2024 is not a great year for dramas, there are a lot of disapointing dramas or not good until the end. So I don't think this drama had a lot of competition.
For the LMH-GHJ drama it doesn’t look like anyone wants to buy it. Keyeast wanted to sell it to tvn but the cost seems to be so high that tvn isn’t buying it and nobody else can afford it except maybe netflix or disney. Both actors frankly overestimated their own popularity and how much revenue they can bring in. The GY-SHK drama isn’t going to tv either but if disney buys that drama then they won’t buy ATS. Plus SHK is more popular right now because of Glory and GY is going to be in SG2 and Trunk so his popularity is about to skyrocket too. Nonetheless I’m thrilled for SE to finally get a channel and air date. It’s been long pending and everything about this sounds super cute. I’m rooting for KSH-CJH to find their breakthrough and give us heartwarming joy.
Ask the Stars is an interesting case and one I don’t think anyone quite knows much of other than here and there speculations.
The drama might be high budgeted, but so was Moving, Queen of Tears, and several other newer released dramas. The production team is also quite strong along with the actors being A-listers. Maybe they want more $$ vs what they are worth. There are also talks about the CG literally taking over a year to complete which is the main cause of the delay (that’s the most ridiculous and unrealistic reason I’ve heard personally). Whatever the case, I’d love to know the drama behind the drama. There is surely a reason and I really wanna know what it is.
@Butterfly Interesting point. I think for Queen of Tears they were able to cut down on the overall budget because Kim Soohyun took a big pay cut and Kim Jiwon wasn't a big A-list unlike Ask The Stars where both are massive A-list celebs and I doubt any of them is willing to take a paycut that big. Moving cost 40 billion won despite all the big names and again I'm assuming most of them must have taken some paycuts because they wanted to drama to air. However Moving also took almost 2 years to air and Disney+ was on the verge of giving up on Korean content until the miracle of Moving happened. The good thing about Moving is it wasn't essentially a romance drama but focused on much more. However Ask The Stars its just another romcom that happens to be set in space and is clearly over budget. Even if the CGI took a year it would have pushed up the cost even more. I wonder if by the time it does come out will anyone still care? Lee Minho and Gong Hyojin should stop being comfortable on past glory and find new dramas immediately to renew their fame.
@Flower
I believe Moving's total production cost was 65B Won. QOT was initially budgeted for 40B after the huge paycut KSH took, but the production cost still ended up at 56B Won. Thankfully the drama was such a huge success that they were well past the break-even mid airing. But back to ATS, I really dont buy the argument that the CGI was so complex it took a whole year. That sounds ridiculous and if thats truly the case, they might have bitten more than they can chew with no buyers and very expensive post production work. Regarding LMH and GHJ, I do find it interesting that both haven't taken up new dramas. We may hear something soon. At least LMH is working on a new movie with Ahn Hyo Seop and potentially doing Pachinko 2 (honestly that drama is so obscure and hardly anyone knows anything about it).
Either way, I feel like the longer a drama/movie takes to reach the public, the likelier it is to have much hype or success. Take Wonderland as an example.
**not have much hype/success.
@Butterfly @Flower
Definitely ATS is a mystery because the hype for it was huge when the first announcement came in 2021 end about the potential casting. There were fanwars and everything but now almost 3 years later there is almost no hype or interest in the drama anymore. Most people have forgotten about it too. What I don’t understand is why dramas have gotten so much more expensive in the last 5 years. I know with Squid Game people were saying it was so cheap to produce but Netflix made so much from it that they gave all the cast and crew a huge bonus. Now we have dramas costing almost 80B won. Isn’t that too much? I much rather prefer small dramas like Serendipity’s Embrace instead which are sweet and comforting. Netflix original dramas aren’t even good. They’ve made 40 or so dramas till now but I can only think of 2-3 that were actually good.
@Roye
I think your information is old. Production team for Ask the stars is Studio dragon, they have a lot of money.
And it's pretty known since January that Ask the stars will air on tvN.
Yay! I can already feel their chemistry just from the still pictures I've seen! Like the others here, I'm not expecting this to be a big ratings hit, but who cares, I'm watching to be entertained by a cute, fluffy, comforting drama, not to fight over ratings lol. I'm definitely seated!
Please remind us again when it's premiered. Thanks.
Yes to this little drama finding its light! Give us all the promo contents Tvn! We have waited for 1.5 years for this!
Finally this is airing. I'm surprised it took so long with these two actors in the lead roles. I like both of them and CHJ is the first talented male lead KSH has had in years - probably since The Tale of Nokdu in 2018.
I thought Seo Ji Hoon was good in My Lovely Liar, wish he was the male lead instead lol. Oh well, at least So Hyun is getting two talented male leads in her projects this year!
Good Boy is one of the most interesting projects KSH has ever picked and it’s just the actor but the whole crew that’s marvellous. I can’t wait to hear the behind story of how the casting came about to be because it’s still surreal to be me that she is working with THE SHIM NA YEON. Her directing style is insanely good and top it off having OJS and LSY in the cast is GOLD.
I agree Seo Ji Hoon is a better actor than Hwang Min-hyun but my shoe is a better actor than Hwang Min-hyun so it's not a very high bar.
I honestly did not watch MLL despite my love for Sohyun. I simply could not stand the ML while 2nd ML was a so much better actor. I honestly thought Seo Ji hoon would get more attention after that drama about BTS but it seems that whole drama went under the radar. I didn't even realize that it was released already. I really hope he gets better opportunities and someday reunites with Sohyun but as a ML.
I'm really hoping for a good romance . My lovely liar was a fiasco .
I’m excited to finally see this drama! KSH in that upknot bun is adorable!
