C-actor Wang Xing Yue has two male lead dramas on deck but after his breakout with The Double he’s landed a big IP new one for his next role. He will be the male lead for C-drama Feng Yu Ling (凤羽令) which is adapted from the novel by writer Fresh Guo Guo which is the precursor novel 仙侠奇缘之杀阡陌to her novel that became The Journey of Flower. The female lead is currently in talks with Ren Min but earlier it was also reported to be Bai Lu so it’s not clear which lady if either will land the role. Either lady would be top billed over Wang Xing Yue but this is still a step up for him in terms of the role.

I prefer Bai Lu to Ren Mi, even though there are claims that Bai Lu is 'overexposed' she has genuine chemistry with her male stars and makes them shine. Ren Mi can be hit or miss. I liked her when she played a supporting role in White Cat Legend, but didn't enjoy her performance in The Longest Promise. Waiting to see how this plays out.
I prefer Bai Lu as well. Chemistry is so important, and on this front she'll definitely deliver. They've already been in two dramas together, but I can deal with a third if they finally get paired up. I heard there was a lot of buzz around them regarding Story of Kunning Palace, so I think there'd be a lot of viewers anticipating them actually being paired up and a lot of buzz around the drama because of it. Fans of the drama wanted a prequel drama focused on their characters' relationship. Dispointed he's not getting a drama centered on his character, but if the story is really good and they chose an actress he has chemistry with it, then it's fine. He has many years to become an established male lead. I'm just hoping Shadow Detective is the first of his dramas to air.
Is there a third option? I like Ren Min, but I don't want her to get dragged through the mud again for doing xianxia. Bai Lu has said she wanted to take a break from doing xianxia after doing two back to back. I agree she should try to challenge herself to do something different.
For me it is exactly the same too. Ren Mi is a good young actress but period roles seem to give her issues. But I am not keen on Bai Lu...she is just over exposed and need a break.
Yeah we need third option. Both girls are not too bad but as many had stated here, Ren min doesn’t seem to suit ancient Chinese girl look especially for Xianxia roles. I like Bai Lu but let’s give others a chance too.
The good thing about Cdrama is that everyone is always booked and busy. True Bai Lu is overexposed and not everything she does is good but that applies to everyone. The important thing is that there is always so much to chose from. The good ones are really good and the bad ones are completely forgettable so it doesn’t hurt. Happy to look forward to whatever Wang Xingyue does next.
"everyone is always booked and busy"... I don't think that's true for everybody... maybe for the high traffic ones.
Aigooo two mid actress. Ren Min is not bad as an actress but she lacks a certain X factor. And I personnally find Bailu below average at best. I wished he would play in a more challenging drama instead of those boring xianxia shows.
This is about about WXY. The only things that make me worry about his future are his agency, agents and boss.
Me too. I have been worrying about him 😂
People say he looks mature for his age but off sets he looks his age. There is something about him that makes me think he could get into trouble and I need to baby sit him!
I watched him in reality shows...I have to say, he is not as chatty as others around his age...he does get into 'emo' state sometime and will enjoy just looking in to sun/sea/river etc.
@HL, I did check out his variety show per your recommendation. He did look more mature than his peers in the interviews there. But he also gave a very strong artist aura, sentimental. LOL
I had no idea he played guitar so well - one of the traits a "campus prince" must have that young gals in my generation all dreamt about. LOL.
@somebody, 🤗🤗 you watched too?? I watch for fun, never fun video...just bits to understand how some artistes are in reality setting. Of course many can still act but it is hard to act for too long...as the camera follows you closely it...
I did like what I saw in Wang Xing Yue...It explains why his pairing with older Wu Jin Yan did not give me the Noona/danseng feel. It was comfortable.
@HL, yes. I ended up liking him in variety shows too. You said it well. His persona in variety shows seems to explain why he's so comfortable with an old actress like WJY. I look forward to more dramas with this guy as a leading man. I hope scripts and directing will treat him well, which I consider more pivotal than the cast anyhow.
It just occurred to me some actors have less consistent image between drama and variety show. One such example is Yang Yang. While I was attracted to YY in Love 020 and You Are My Glory, I didn't like him that much in Divas Hit the Road where he looked a bit immature. LOL.
Typo - not old actress, but "older" actress. There's a difference. LOL. My bad.
Lol
@Somebody, I watched YangYang in Diva too...I did not warm to him, he was okay. I have to day I used to like Yang Yang after Love 020...but after watching his other dramas plus variety shows...my interested just tempered down. But I will still watch his dramas to check it out...
@HL @Somebody from what I gather reading about his past and upbringing boy had to mature quick cause his parents pushing him to learn as many things as possible but also because Wang Xing Yue told that used to be bullied hard at school and he had to give his money to his "friends". Therefore this hardship, I assume, encouraged him to find escape in arts/acting. It even boosted his ability since boy got admitted in the Central academy at 15 which is very rare from what I heard. His teacher that came up and defended him when people doubted his age said this boy was working like crazy : a very disciplined and hardworking boy signs of his maturity.
@Sirey, Thank you for more background. That expects why even when lots of the artiste his age are playing and chatting , he will have to take time off to be by himself. Not unhappy just need time to himself.
I dislike parents who hothouse their kids. To deny them of good childhood and independent discovery of themselves. I too get strict with my son over school work but I dont force him to take on any hobbies he dont want. I completely live him to discover that on his own. I like him to explore and nurture his interest... Now he is going to Uni studying what he truly love.
Tiger mums(dads too)...there are many of them around. I know why they take on such a role but I too know how it can affect may kids and their self confidence.
No reliable casting rumors at all for this drama on Weibo. And it won't be Bai Lu since she said she would take a break after doing two xianxias consecutively. And if its Ren Min then good luck to the production team and male lead.
Can you share with the rest of the class what you know about Ren Min?
I like both actresses but for the mental health of ren min, I hope she doesn’t take this role. Ppl are going to attack her for her looks again. She doesn’t fit xianxia role.
The leading lady needs to be someone who can equal or surpass WJY chemistry with him. He’s still young and inexperienced and needs all the support he can get. I don’t see this happening with BL or RM but who knows? Depends on the writing and director. I hope he gets a good director who can highlight his strengths and play down his weaknesses. I thought he was lacking in some of the romantic scenes of the later half. His intense beautiful gazes just became kind of vacuous. I blame this all on the director hahaha.
The problem I have is that most of the popular younger actresses often have the plucky girl next door image and that doesn't equate to sizzle in my book. I'd love to see him work with some solid veteran actors in stronger dramas similar to Like A Flowing River or films that could make the film festival circuit. He has a lot of potential. I want to see younger actresses with the aura of Gong Li and leading lady visuals like Ni Ni in the industry. These are the type of female leads I'd love to see him paired with.
You have great taste. The Great Gong Li is peerless. I also love Zhou Xun and Xhou Dongyu. Tang Wei is my absolute favorite. I just love these actors because all of them have strong sense of self which is very beautiful especially in female actors. I see this in WJY too. TD is my first drama of her and she was terrific. Cannot watch YP because I don’t like harem dramas and Qing hairstyle on the men is so unattractive.
I hope WXY will go on to find himself like these actors and do good work in the future. He seemed very sensitive which is great for an actor but can also make life difficult. Then I read about the scary producer and it makes me quite worried. Hope he stays grounded and focussed. And learn English for his international fans!
"Plucky girl next door" you describe them perfectly. Wang Xing Yue would look great onscreen with a Liu Yi Fei.
Whats up with exaggerated photo editing, they turn WXY into a wax statue LOL
@Merry but you are quiet when your fave Neo Hou abuses editing, makeup and whatnot. It's funny.😂
Double standard check?
I hope he won't be turned into Dylan Wang 2.0. LOL.
Not Bai Lu. She is overexposed. Not Ren Min either, PLZ. Ren Min's acting is solid in The Longest Promise but she is criticized of lacking visuals for costumes. She didn't have chemistry with Xiao Zhan in TLP either. RM's short of certain charisma for viewers to fall for her on screen. I watched some clips of RM's dramas besides TLP. I don't think she's a versatile actress. Her image onscreen fits a certain stereotype, i.e., fiery young spirit. That's perhaps the reason why she wasn't able to deliver convincing acting as XZ's romantic interest in TLP. For that female-centric drama, she looked exhausted in the 2nd half of the story, losing the energy the heroine was characterized to have in the original novel. It just shows she's still lacking as a FL to carry a drama.
WXY's personal background is very different from DW besides his agents and boss are not making he do the types of dramas/characters that DW does. I think he is a so so much better actor than DW and WXY have so many more advantages for his career to go well if everybody around him is on the same signed agreement. He got a very good voice and people do not complain much about his line delivery.
I hope I do not lose my fingers if I might be proven wrong in the future.
WXY's boss is known for messing up badly and even ruining careers of his signed actors.
So I always ready to see anybody who have this kind of boss to simply evaporate in thin air some day.
His agency and the boss (Yu Zheng I assume) are what I'm concerned about to have him either overexposed like Bai Lu or take bad projects. I really bet on him to be next "IT" boy in C dramaland. I hope it doesn't prove me delusional cos I'm very fond of him at this point. LOL.
I'm concerned too, especially after Song Wei Long. I want to see WXY work on some solid projects and not just do the typically idol dramas. Also too many of Xu Kai's dramas have been mediocre. I've haven't seen him in another role that had the charm and charisma of his role in Arsenal Military Academy. WXY's agency should be gearing him up to take Hu Ge's route. Watching The Double just made me wish a Nirvana in Fire like project could come his way. Whatever is released next should keep his momentum going
