Byun Woo Seok in the August 2024 Edition of Dazed Korea in the Launch of His Clinique Brand Campaign

So I thought Byun Woo Seok would be the face of Clinique Men when it was announced the brand had selected him. Turns out he may still be doing the Men or the skincare line, but he’s also doing their makeup endorsement. His first pictures are out for the August 2024 edition of Dazed Korea magazine where he is clearly wearing a lot of the brand’s makeup and highlighting its lip gloss line in particular. I don’t love or dislike this androgynous and RuPaul’s Drag Race-esque makeup on a man look, it’s very glam for sure and Byun Woo Seok pulls it off because he’s so masculine and isn’t afraid of a little (or a lot of) lipstick.

  • Clinique chose him not just for his popularity and great skin. Pretty sure they had in mind to up their lip product sales numbers. No denying BWS has great lips.

  • The first pic with him looking away made me wonder if that was his true emotion. Like here look lip stick…. lol Sacrifice

    • Lolzz. Wouldn't it be weird to see a man reapply his lipstick or bring out his lipstick. A truly unnecessary product if you ask me.

      • I’ve seen a YouTuber from Korea interview some male celebrities about what bb cream they use and the host was like a male expert on men’s makeup so my impression was that more men in Korea where some makeup to an extent but I feel celebrities do so more than actual normal netizens. Lipstick I’m not sure of though. I don’t remember the YouTubers name. Just an observation. The guests were ft island band mates.

      • I've seen interviews with male kpop idols in their makeup chair having their makeup done, things like bb cream, eyebrow products, all kinds of eye makeup and concealer are very normal to see on male idols. And they use lipstick too, it's just not bright, more like natural tones. I remember seeing men with fuller lips having their lips made smaller by applying concealer and then that lipstick only in the inner corners of the mouth,

  • It may be a good marketing idea given his popularity .Interesting as South Korea is conservative ! But it didn't work when Chanel made Chanel N 5 campaign with Brad Pitt . It was a flop .

    • South Korea is pretty comfortable with male make up.
They even have laser or electricy hair removal on the face procedure for men, actor Yang Se Jong said that he did it on Salon drip interview.

      • @Olesya, i didn't to offend anyone. I don't mind about who wears lipstick . A lot of men have laser hair removal , get all the parts of the body waxed, use lotions, moisture, ...They go to Beauty's salon a lot . It's just that in a conservative society as South Korea in which divorcée with child, orphans,homosexuals,...are poorly viewed ,..that's what i see through the prism of dramas , i find it dichotomous . That's all . When i walk in the streets of my country, i can't say that i see men wearing lipstick, aside a few singers !And as our Olympic Games ceremony has showed we are a little open minded .

      • @cahill
No, I didn't think you offended anyone or something like that.
Is just I like some k-pop groups and watch variety shows. Probably their society are more conservative, but I think their show-business industry are more open-minded.
Like heavy make up for male artists are common thing, and they do a lot of commercials for make up. Not only for that, actor Park Seo Joon advertised pads once.
And they have gay shows and dramas, their popular actors filmed in a gay roles. I can't imagine this in a total homophobic countries, as my country is homophobic, and such things are almost impossible here, even though young generation are more progressive.
Maybe, old generation are more conservative (and can I say, more problematic), as I think young generation more progressive (at least I want to think so). Such advertising campaigns are aimed at a younger audience, who okay with that and support new things.

      • @cahill, but I read in some forums that American girls were publicly scorned and lectured for wearing shorts by some local folks in some parts of France. LOL. I also thought Europe might be more open than the US. But those blogs gave a very different impression, totally opposite to the Olympics opening.

      • @Olesya, I agree with you about the fact that Kpop singers, ...are more open minded about make up, even Lagarfeld used to say that Koreans were more interested and open minded about trying all kind of fashion . i'm glad that you understood my meaning .
@Somebody ,in France there are also narrow minded people , i live near Bordeaux and people are rather cool , it's summertime and women wear shorts , very revealing dresses ,...men wear shorts, bermudas, shirts...they are cool . In my city there are a total of 13 communities( English, Algerian, Chinese , Dutch, Vietnamese, Indian,Portuguese, spanish,...) some are very conservative others not . I have friends from various nationalities since my school days . And it's cool

  • LOL. BWS isn't the first celeb endorsing cosmetics business including skincare, makeup, and hair products. Chinese actor Xiao Zhan has been doing so for YSL (skincare) and NARS (lipsticks) for years. XZ has been making so much money for these beauty lines that they always had him in annual commercials of lipsticks updated with new products. LOL.

Cosmetics companies have found male stars may be more appealing to larger markets thanks to their huge fanbases. Fan girls love to watch their heartthrobs on screen more often outside drama and film. More CFs are welcome. LOL.

Now, male celebs also compete with female celebs for endorsements on beauty products. I wonder if that's the major reason why there have been so many rifts between Chinese actresses and actors after they costarred together in the same dramas. They have to make a living anyway and also feed many staff in their agencies. LOL.

  • He sure pulls off this dandy look, what with the black hair, black sweater and white collar. Reminds me of the figure-fitting Prada outfit he wore in Milan. Sam dandy vibe.

  • He kinda looks like Seonghwa from ATEEZ here. Anyway, nothing wrong with men wearing and modeling makeup. In my opinion as a bisexual person, I like seeing both men and women looking great and dolled up. More eye candies for me 🤷‍♀️

Also, we have to remember that men in the past used to wear makeup, wigs, and high heels. Only people who believe in toxic gender norms will find this weird.

    He looks good!

  • He has great features and bone structure so it looks good on him😘

I am always surprised how Korea and China have men advertising women's beauty products but I suppose it makes sense in a way as women are the target audience and they have lots of female fans

    • He is conventionally good-looking, attractive face & body. But I don't think his face structure is sharp/defined/exotic enough to call it "great". Just my two cents, I'm not a hater.

  • He is objective good-looking in terms of beauty standard metrics but he's not up to my alley. I need to watch Lovely Runner to see the hype about him.

    • LOL. I understand the hype and join in saying that he is impressive in Lovely Runner. I had a hard time finishing the series because it is slow for my taste.

I feel like Wang Xing Yue is his Chinese equivalent with The Double. LOL. I will pay attention to both of them from now on, hoping that their acting range will grow.
