MBC Fri-Sat Thriller Drama Black Out with Byun Yo Han Racks Up Rave Reviews as Ratings Triple Through Episode 8

So there is another underrated K-drama that reminds me a lot of the tense and twisty Train when I saw the promos. MBC Fri-Sat drama Black Out (Snow White Must Die) has been the little drama that could in the competitive weekend landscape, premiering to a measly 2.8% but increasing in ratings and racking up strong word of mouth. The most recent episode 8 got 6.4% ratings which isn’t a lot but about triples the premiere. Starring Byun Yo Han, Go Joon, Go Bo Gyeol, and Kim Bo Ra, the strong cast is delivering on a very intense story about a man imprisoned for a murder that he doesn’t even remember committing and once released 11 years later he goes about trying to uncover the truth. The drama has 14-episodes so its more than halfway done and may be a great time to check it out.

  • I like it, it's pretty slow burn with a lot of detestable characters but is intriguing. This and Good Partner are my favourite ongoing shows. In comparison, the cable weekend dramas are severely underwhelming me and I have dropped them.

  • This drama reminds me a bit of Beyond Evil with Shin Ha-kyun and Yeo Jin-goo and, interestingly, also has a female director.

This has a great cast and I've been waiting for it to air for ages now. Casting was first announced back in late 2021, they started filming in 2022 but filming stopped and then re-started with the new female director Byun Young-joo. Finished filming in 2023 and finally airing in 2024. It was quite a saga to get this made so must be a relief for the tam that the drama ratings are going up and the drama is getting a good response.

Sidenote: It's nice to see Kim Bo Ra and Go Bo Gyeol cast in this drama. Go Bo Gyeaol's career especially confuses me. She is a good actress and very pretty cute visual similar to popular actresses like Kim Tae-ri and Kim Hye-yoon but her career lately is very underwhelming. Fills like her aency don't do much for her. Since she joined Highzium agency back in 2020 she's filmed one single episode drama and two dramas including this one. Maybe she isn't getting offers or maybe it's her choice. I read on wiki that she runs a cafe with her parents on an island outside of Seoul since 2023 so maybe she decided to step back from full time acting?

    • As I see, Highzium isn't strong agency to promote not popular actors.
They have only two big actors: Kim Ji Won and Song Joon Ki, and both of them got recognition before joining to agency.
Maybe after Highzium relocated to JTBC building, and SLL studio became it's parent company and majore shareholders with 60% things will change

      • Yeah it seems like none of their actors besides SJK who started the agency and already famous and now, I guess, KJW joined get pushed much.

I didn't know that about Highzium. I know they changed their name when they merged with Zium Content but didn't know they had such close ties with JTBC.

  • I have been so mesmerized recently by a real-life Taiwanese crime/legal drama to completely leave made-believe stories behind. LOL. I'll catch up on this one after Taiwanese ruckus die down a bit. Thanks for the update.
