The long list of nominees for the 32nd annual Chinese TV Golden Eagle Awards are out and the first issue of contention is around C-actress Crystal Liu (Liu Yi Fei) . The domestically prestigious award is held biennially so 2024 is the first one since 2022 and the nominees can have multiple drama nominations. The first round was released earlier this week and top C-actress Crystal Liu is nominated for two dramas A Dream of Splendor and Meet Yourself. But a few days later the nominees were shrunk into the second round and Crystal was gone and the explanation was that because she is a US citizen she is not eligible for this award which only goes to Mainland Chinese citizens. Netizens are annoyed at this arbitrary albeit long standing rule.

Well... it is a known practise...I doubt she did not know. CCP is clamping down on people dashing Chinese passport for overseas ones.
But I have to say...I find US passport expensive as people like Liu Yufei have to pay double tax...China and US, isn't it? So is that really a good idea. Europe passport dont have such rules.

She was raised in the US and has the right to keep her second identity, she didnt buy a passport, and ppl are not upset that she was removed they are angry that they CCP keep deliberately putting double citizenship artists on the list to remove them later to create a buzz around those actros as a way to force them to drop their citizenship
China dont allow Dual citizenship. Many Countries do not allow it too. Yes...she is pressured by Gov to drop her US citizenship.

I understand the eligibility rules but if it's a long-standing rule, why include her in the first place and gave her fans false hopes? Anyway, I'll never take any awards that include public votes at certain percentages seriously. They encourage fandom voting to generate traffic and revenue, then turn around to give the awards to the 2nd/3rd place because they supposedly ended up with a higher score from the appointed judges.
Stupid Games... The Gov like to make this type of stupid game. Remember, afew years, Fan Bingbing was approved to attend a award giving event. It was quite a big event. Everyone though she was let out of her forced banned. But the organisers had a phone call just as she arrived. Then they had inform her, she cannot be at the event just as she arrived on site. She had to leave in such a embarrassing manner.
Against a last min call be CCP to cancel her appearance at last min. They could have done it sooner as organiser would have seek permission before inviting her...
I hate such games that Gov play: Kill Chicken Scare Monkey (杀鸡儆猴). They play this game very cleverly... even Alibaba' Jack Ma was their subject.
I don't think this has anything to do with the government though. Seems to me more like the organizers knew those celebrities are not allowed, but they still intentionally include them initially for public buzz then pull out at the last minute so they don't flout the government rules.
Oh.. but won't that make organisers look so unprofessional? It creates too much negative emotions before the show.. I dont know..However, this is really sensationalist news. It has create lots of noise and attention for the show.
But I am unsure if Liu Yufei even cares, to be honest...
@HL The Golden Eagle Awards has lost all credibility after all their rigging fiascos in the recent years. The only drama award in China that remains non-payola is the Feitian Awards.
These awards are a joke anyway due to how they are done.
Disappointing. Even though she's stricken from the award nominees, her success in those dramas is undeniable.
Funnily, she was the first golden eagle goddess back in 2006.
Fair enough if those are the rules but then they should never have nominated her in the first place instead of playing these games. It's not like they didn't know her citizenship or the rules when she was nominated.
This award so unprofessional. They shouldn't put her drama since 1st round.
Xiaozhan dilraba's drama also didn't pass 2nd round. It says fans voting in rules. They are top traffic i doubt they lost votes when their fanbases the biggest in cnet industry.
