Chae Jong Hyeob and Kim Min Ju Cast in Romance K-drama Shining

There is a new romance K-drama cast and ready to film for a 2025 release. It’s titled Shining and will star Chae Jong Hyeob and idol-actress Kim Min Ju. He’s been a male lead for years now and does quiet romance so well but she’s getting her first female lead role after being a supporting star in a few dramas so I’ll reserve my impression after seeing her onscreen here. The drama is from the screenwriter of A Piece of Your Mind and the plot deals with a young romance between the leads who break up due to life situations and reunites ten years later in their 30’s for a second chance. It’s descripted as an uplifting romance and will be directed by the PD of Our Beloved Summer.

  • A 1993 liner with a 2001 liner. Did we really need this? Aren’t there enough lead roles within their age category to cast with? Especially since a majority of the storyline is in the present when they are in their 30s. What does the industry have against age appropriate pairings?

  • How many times will he lead the same scenario. Like no joke. Is he type casted? He is okay but his dramas seem to follow the same formula.

    • But must say it’s a strange genre to be typecast for. Male lead who reunites with his first love after 10/15 years. Maybe it’s to make up for his Potato Boy past. 😂

    • Lol that’s some detailed observation. This theme is actually my type but this doesn’t seem to be much unique indeed

  • Typecast or not, CJH had very convincing and sweet chemistry with Kim So Hyun in Serendipity's Embrace. I also liked him in one of my favorite dramas, Castaway Diva. I don't mind checking out his new drama again. It's more entertaining to see an actor who nailed roles in specific genres than watching awkward acting of those who make a foray into wild jungles where they get lost. LOL. One prominent example is Lee Joon Gi who has found a niche in legal/crime/action genres by reprising similar roles. I just love watching him in those dramas and never get bored. LOL.

  • I'm very happy that the writer of A Piece of Your Mind is back! I loved this drama. TVN, don't touch this drama!

For the casting... How can she be in her thirties... She looks super young.

I hope CJH's character will be more expressive than his last ones.

  • They are making fewer KDramas now, and the few that get made are tackling the same themes. What's the use of this drama when TVN is already coming out with Love on a Single Log Bridge this month?

  • Its not just that their age gap is severe, but visually, he LOOKS every bit of his age. That's what makes it uncomfortable.

    • This and Can This Love Be Translated drama have two couples who look every bit their age which makes the age gap more obvious. It was nice when we were getting same age couples or ones with small gaps. Now we’re back to the big age gaps and the surge in idol actors.

  • Yikes. A 2001 liner playing someone in her 30s. Not mention the glaring age gap and the even more glaring way that they both look their respective ages. Casting directors are getting lazier by the day. Reminds of a comment a coupel years ago that it's becoming more and more that kdrama casting directors don't do chemistry reads anymore and just base their casting on visuals.

    • But even the visuals don’t match. They were obvious looking for an actress who would be willing to play second billing to him but still they must have had more people to choose from.

      • The billing thing and it also seems like the production want to tap into her name recognition and fans from being an idol for a few years. She's been doing supporting roles before and after her produce 48/izone years, but she does feel too young to playing someone in their 30s. Those pictures in the casting news don't help.

      • This. I am baffled by the casting of this idol when there are sooo many talented actresses in their late 20s-early 30s crying out for lead roles who could convincingly play this character and they give it to an early 20s idol who looks even younger than her age to play a character in her 30s. Make it make sense. She must have some strong backing

  • She's 24 yo, he's 31 yo.
Kim Soo Hyun was 25 yo and Jun Ji Hyun was 32 yo, when they filmed MLFAS. People complained about their age gap during casting news, and yet they won Best couple award after drama aired.
And they're not the single example.
People here often overdramatic because of age gaps.

      • Literally the same, lol. They have 8 years age gap, KSH and JJH had 7 years age gap. How is this not the same thing?
And she will be 24 after 3 months, probably the moment they will start filming. She doesn't look 19, and yet, again, people complained about KSH looking much younger than JJH before drama aired as well. But you can't know now how old she will look on that drama screen.
