First Look at Next Guo Jing Ming Directed Period C-drama Hidden Shadow with Wang Chu Ran and Li Hong Yi

It’s unfortunate that director Guo Jing Ming has such a own vision on all his works and presents it regardless of how it may be received by the broader audience. My Journey to You was just okay but Fangs of Fortune was a flop, it was too over-the-top in presentation and the slow burn story did no wonders in roping in viewers willing to stay for the reveal. His next drama is already filmed and should arrived in spring of 2025 next year, it’s called Hidden Shadow (Chinese title Feng Ying Ran Mei Xiang 烽影燃梅香) and stars Wang Chu Ran and Li Hong Yi in an assassin with political conspiracy and intrigue pas-de-deux between the leads. Since it’s a period drama ala MGTY and not xianxia like FoF it looks more muted and less style over substance. I am really looking forward to Wang Chu Ran’s top billed strong female lead role here and maybe this one will get me to like Li Hong Yi.

  • The cinematography is GJM's style. I bet, one of the leads will be a soft spoken person. Lol.
Why are his dramas so dark, cold and moody?

    • I miss him. No matter what anyone says. I like his acting and his looks help 😊 but he does look like he gained some weight but he looks healthy. It seems we won’t see much of him till next year though. I think his dramas might drop like hot cakes next year because he has quite a few already finished or in the process of being finished. At least I hope they do. I see he cameo’d a bit though just in dramas I had no interest in. Still he has been like a ghost and almost had me wondered if he left for good.

  • I am scared whenever a drama advertises itself as "strong female". They don't know what this means, especially if written by Guo Jing Ming. Everyone must speak with baited breath and the fighting is worried that slow mo technology will be extinct.

    • Yes, I am surprised by the style over substance critique. I found FOF very clever. I liked the director’s subversive playful take on the genre which is made glaringly obvious by the cast dancing K-pop style at the end of each episode.

  • I found FOF very fun and entertaining, not heavy and dark like MJTY. Also liked the idea of vain funny witty demons . I respect a director that sticks to his vision.
I would love to see Liu Yuning work with this director.

  • I like Wang Chu Ran after seeing her in Are You the One. But I don't necessarily like GJM's style. His dramas are very pretty with little substance. He focuses too much on look rather than the storyline

    • I agree that FOF was amazing, I don't understand the style over substance allegation because GJM's works are always structured and detailed. Even the smallest guest stars were given a proper arc and motivation to exist.

      • Haters gonna hate! My Journey to you and Fangs of Fortune went over a lot of people's heads. I'm glad the naysayers didn't stick around for none of these dramas.

      • Yes, I am surprised by the style over substance critique. I found FOF very clever. I liked the director’s subversive playful take on the genre which is made glaringly obvious by the cast dancing K-pop style at the end of each episode.

  • FoF reminds me of the popular book Circe, modern retelling about the shenanigans of Greek gods/goddesses. I appreciate GJM for daring to do something different. I still put MJTY as one of my top dramas, dropped FOF and let's see what he comes up with next.

  • I like FOF tho, it's not just romance between lovers, it contains different kinds of LOVE, (only mature people would understand) it's not a typical Romance where little girls love, it doesn't focused on Intimacy/sKinships like over kissing scene dramas mostly have, GJM maybe allergic to happy endings but still his drama were intelligently produce, people call FOF flop because the actors of the drama aren't much popular as the other actors and actresses but FOF casts are actually have good acting skills, of course people have diverse opinions and preferences so whatever. I'M JUST SHARING FOF IS GOOD FOR THOSE WHO ISN'T INTO DRAMAS WHICH FOCUSES ON PLAINLY ROMANCE OF FL AND ML.
