This was one of the weirdest drama shelvings I’ve witnessed in my long drama watching life. Resident Playbook (Wise Resident Life) the follow up to the hit Hospital Playlist drama (season 1 and 2) was filmed in 2023 was supposed to air in 2024 as a high profile drama on tvN. Then in early 2024 the real life doctors in South Korea went on strike or quit their jobs after hearing that the government planned to relax entry requirements into medical school to boost the number of doctors in the country, which would lead to lower pay for the existing doctors who are already suffering from overworking. This caused a backlash from the public excoriating the doctors as their strike/quit action led to longer wait times for treatment for current patients. During this tense situation Resident Playbook was planning to air and ended up indefinitely delaying it as the public anticipated the drama as glorifying residents and the medical professional in general. Now word is the drama will air in mid-2025, and I’ve also been seeing more medical dramas being discussed so perhaps the backlash has indeed petered out.
