Well this is a blast from the past, and mostly from K-ent where military service is an onerous two years and countless male celebs have tried to evade it in various schemes big and small. And when I say big I mean there was a method of pulling out lots of teeth to create a dental condition and OMG is that not just painful but also losing a lot for the rest of one’s life for gaining a little in the here and now. Anyhoo, TW-ent has reported that actor Darren Wang (Wang Da Lu) has been detained (along with a dozen others) in a scheme to pay a doctor to forge medical records in order to evade Taiwan’s mandatory enlistment requirement. His side has not denied the allegations (he reported spent NT $1M on the payment) and said that he will serve his duty starting in March 2025 next month for a one year enlistment, which is the current length. This is so dumb, Taiwan has been ping-ponging for years on reducing the enlistment period successively and only recently increased it again, at one point he could have served three months and be done with it. This has also led to TW-media digging up more of his past of being a poor student and getting kicked out of schools and the like, and goodness how is this a surprise when he’s leaned into his rebellious kid past and that’s also part of his image.
So this breaking political news story does tie into the recent scandal around top K-actor…
Tencent is reportedly thrilled with it's recently released period C-drama The Glory as it becomes…
It's thanks to the good graces of these two being talented actors that they have…
As the public reveals and denials, and now lawsuit cases, continue on in South Korea,…
Now I'm more nervous than excited with the confirmation of the cast and the commencement…
With fewer K-dramas getting made per year compared to previous years it's even more special…

He pulled his actual teeth out to get out or forged he did? That is no walk in the park and so painful. Just thinking about it hurts my mouth. That is wild regardless of his punk nosed past lol. I at this point don’t trust anyone’s image no matter what country they hail from. Being a celeb is all about branding and forging an image to keep us entertained and no one is perfect.
I understood it as referring to a practice by some conscription-dodgers, but not necessary Darren Wang.
Korean celebrity MC Mong did that, pulled all his teeth and avoided military, but he was canceled because of it and never made a come back. He was in the first season of 1night2days.
Did he put new ones in? That just sounds awful. Imagine pulling your teeth out just for the heck of it when just one tooth feels like agony.😱
One year is not that long. Like before I know it, it's already 2025. Is it because there's no administrative or special departments for celebrities in Taiwan's military?
It’s not about the time but significance. His career in mainland gonna tank if he serve in military for taiwan
I'm sure there are Taiwanese actors who have served the military and still have a career in China. How about Ethan Juan, Mark Chao, Chris Wu?
Some of them from what I know either completes their military service before becoming an artist or before starting their career in mainland. Or maybe because in the past taiwan didn’t openly antagonize china, it wasn’t much of problem.
his career isn't exactly prolific in china anyway. when was the last time he was even in a drama. I doubt c-nets appreciate people using their privilege to avoid responsibility either.
Completely unrelated but just wanted to say Yang Zi’s new promotional content for Michael Kors is soooo pretty!!! Chinese celebs fashion campaigns are always great to watch. Loved the Gucci one with Xiao Zhan and NiNi for the Chinese New Year event too. Fashion brands being more diverse with their ambassadors is good to see.
I am aware he is a popular actor but I have never warmed to him at all. I do wonder what will happen if he is found guilty? In South Korean, such action can affect one's career and carry heavy penalties. I dont think TW is as strict.
Yah considering how Taiwan is lax on some other controversies with questionable actors as of late I don’t think he will be totally cancelled but who knows? I liked him only in the movie Our Times. Other than that not much interest in his other projects.
I agree... Taiwan is lax with a number of celebs.
Not an actor I'm fond of either. Totally not a fan of his visuals. Acting is fine though.
I don't think he'd be canceled but this doesn't sit well with the Taiwanese public given the status quo of Taiwan. Taiwanese men used to serve at least 2 years in the military. The mandatory enlisting requirement was reduced to 4 months by a former president (from the current opposition party KMT), a CCP stooge (and you surely see why he did so). The former president from another party (DPP, pro US) changed the service duration to one year under the pressure from the US.
Not a fan of his visuals too...
Well deserved. Taiwanese social media has been making jokes about him. His Chinese name, "Da Lu," literally denotes mainland China. Some Chinese netizens were shocked to find out Wang Da Lu wasn't even born in Da Lu (mainland China). LMAO.
This is so stupid & embarrassing esp in his age... could have done so much shorter if he just went lol
Pulling your teeths for just three months enlistment lol dude what's wrong with you .
You have completely misread and misunderstood the article. He did not pull out his teeth, that’s just an instance of what Korean celeb did to avoid military service. And at one point Taiwan’s service was 3 months but now it’s 1 year.
