So the periodic rumors about the potential release of any one of a slew of BL-novel adaptations into C-dramas shelved due to the government crackdown on the genre has so far not had any come true, other than Justice in the Dark which released 8-episodes before getting the kibosh and remains unfinished in airing. This week there is growing rumors that Winner is King with Tan Jian Ci and Chen Zhe Yuan will be released in Thailand in March later this month. If so then the drama will likely never formally air in China as it’s not allowed for a C-drama to be broadcast overseas before it airs domestically. It could be that selling to Thailand and then subsequent pirating back into China can earn enough money and at least not let this drama be a total sunk cost. I love these attempted workarounds or stealth air drops, it adds excitement beyond the ordinary wait for a drama release.

Are there any rumors other than TrueID? Cause they came out and said they have not bought the rights for Winner is King. If it is going to show outside of China, whatever platform bought the rights will be advertising openly, not spreading rumors, just as WowWow did for Justice in the Dark.
That just gets me wondering, how come there are so many chinese BL novels but not dramas. Similarly, there are so many fantasy genre novels (set in modern times) which get altered when adapted to dramas. Are censorship rules different for media and literature?
Majority of chinese bl novels are heavily censored to the point where it could pass for friendship, especially the more recent ones. Skinship is creatively alluded to and brushed over, everything more is cut out and left to the readers imagination (maybe some vague mention of helping each other or mysterious pains after to help the reader guess) (some authors have also found a way to post certain scenes outside of the novel in a less restricted setting but most don't ) Sometimes authors leave words blank or use code words. It is very frustrating as a reader and I can't imagine how frustrating it is for the writers. It takes a skilled writer to write any kind of chemistry between two people when they are so restricted 😭 it is amazing how the genre continues to thrive tho no matter how many restrictions they are. It's sad really as there are some really great stories out there but the romance can end up feeling unsatisfactory because authors can't well, write it properly.
Justice in the dark currently airing in Japan.
First one of the BL that interest me will be airing in Japan, now another in Thailand. Sound like a really smart move. Better then allow the project to be shelf forever. I am keen on Justice in the Dark that will be aired in Japan. Zhang Xincheng's protray of the character looks very good there.
