Park Sung Hoon Cast as the Male Lead in Romance K-drama Efficient Dating of Single Men and Women Opposite Han Ji Min

The great reception for Han Ji Min in her last romance K-drama makes sense that her next pick will also be the same genre. She earlier signed on for K-drama Efficient Dating of Single Men and Women (Efficient Dating of Singles) and this week it’s announced that her male lead will be Park Sung Hoon. It took me a moment to process that because wow this is a weird time for scandal touched male actors. Park Sung Hoon is a very good actor and nearly had a breakout in recent year with the male antagonist in Queen of Tears followed up as a transgender army veteran turned Squid Game 2 contestant. He was signed on as the male lead opposite Yoona in a romance sageuk until his scandal two months ago in January led to him leaving the drama. The scandal was that he posted on his SNS a screenshot of a Squid Game parody AV porn movie cover, which led to K-netizens cancelling him for being seen as sleazy and gross especially since the porn movie was alleged to be pretty hardcore stuff. I guess while his current image won’t work opposite Yoona the producers of this drama feel the hubbub has died down now and also being with closer in age Han Ji Min should be fine. I’m good either way, his scandal is such a nothingburger compared to what is going on in K-ent right now.

  • Glad his comeback is quick. I think this is a better choice for him than the sageuk anyway so I'm looking forward to this.

    • Definitely. Nothing against Yoona personally, she seems nice. But going from Yoona to Han Ji Min is definitely an upgrade

    • If he's going to do this genre, working with Han Ji Min is a much better choice. Hopefully this drama is more 'slice of life' than fluff rom com. Han Ji Min and Park Sung Hoon are in the same agency and her status is solid enough in the industry that if she doesn't want to work with him, she really doesn't have to. Yoona still has her innocent idol image from SNSD, so him doing that drama with her at the time of his scandal definitely wouldn't have worked. Han Ji Min is a much better fit with her solidly being in the actress category with a long filmography in both TV and film. She's also his senior in the industry so that definitely helps. As far as future romantic dramas go, he should just stick to working with top star actresses who have enough clout to choose who they want to work with, and lesser known actresses with storng acting skills. He should avoid anything that doesn't have a strong script.

  • He is sleazy and gross. He should not star as a male lead especially with Han Ji Min. BH is using their actress for the return of this sleazy actor. What a shame.

  • He is a brilliant actor, so this is a good news. Also, his co-star is an upgrade from before. It will be ironic if this drama actually does better than the other one. I hope he doesn't ruin this chance. I am willing to give him a benefit of doubt.

  • I'm watching Park Eun Bin "Hyper knife " the drama isn't that great but as an actress she is acing her role as a psychopath surgeon . I'd like for Han Ji Min to not take another romance genre role .

    • I just read synopsis on that drama today...not my kind of drama...I might get nightmares. But good to read fellow reviews.

    • Oops! I almost forgot this one considering PEB one of my faves 😭. I've been binging some old dramas that are giving me a blast. LOl.

      • @Somebody, i was waiting for her performance , as i said the drama didn't appeal me yet but she is acing her role as she doesn't overdo it . It's different from her previous roles and i'm still watching it .
@HL , i understand that's not your kind of genre but curiously, for having watching many dark dramas, this one until now, doesn't give me a somber vibe . She is a genius neuro surgeon who is passionate by operating but don't care about patients , her excessive obsession made his mentor ( a genius too) to withdraw his licence , a few years later she runs a pharmacy and operates illegally . Her former mentor who needs a specific operation comes back to find her . She refuses . She kills persons who are a nuisance for her ...

    • HJM actually said in an interview this week that she'd like to try a thriller role but they don't come her way.
Instead she gets offered yet another romance but with a colleague from the same agency. It's a little bit disappointing but expected from BH entertainment.

      • Park Min Young was typecasted in romance dramas for many years, but now she has 2 future dramas that are different from previous ones, with quite interesting plot.
I wish Han Ji Min will get her chance as well.

      • @Dreamer, that's what saddens me, when an actress is successful in one genre they tend to not propose her something new . I think that many veteran actresses as her would like to widen their acting . i'm not a fan of Song hye kyo but The glory was a challenge for her and now she can be seen in a different way .

  • I mixed up PSH with kim Seon Ho sometimes. My bad LOL. PSH's creepy presence freaked me out of QoT. Some fans raved about his acting. Perhaps that's how he's supposed to be in QoT? But I didn't survive his creepiness and eventually dropped QoT anyway LMAO.

After checking several dramas of HJM per fans' recommendations, I figured out her romance dramas aren't up my alley. Her acting is solid. But somehow I'm not appealed to her aura in telling a love story, be it melo or rom com. I agree with @cahill. Perhaps she should try other genres, legal dramas or thrillers maybe?

  • I'm not sure Park Sung Hon casted yet, as I saw his agency response: "To our knowledge, another actor is being considered as a higher priority for ‘Efficient Dating for Singles’ before Park Sung Hoon. We are currently awaiting a decision.”. I don't know how casting works, but I guess another actor's decision to film or not in that drama will decide PSH's casting as well.

What about Park Sung Hoon, his scandal was so stupid, it made me disappointed.
Imagine being a fan of someone's acting for years when no one knew them, seeing in live action how they starting to get recognition. Seeing how their popularity skyrocketed for a few days thanks to Squid game 2, how future romcom drama with him and Yoona as main leads started to get views and discussions as well, only for him to ruin this in the seconds with AV poster on Instagram.
It was so stupid, I didn't even felt sorry for him, just highly disappointed in his stupidity.
At the same time I think accidentally posted AV poster isn't enough reason to cancel someone. It's my personal opinion.

I think right now isn't a good time for announcing his acting news, right in the middle of KSH scandal, his last co-star. These scandals on completely different levels and incomparable, but of course they compared.

I didn't expect for PSH recover and getting casting news so quickly, but it's BH agency, so not surprised. Han Ji Min from BH as well, maybe agency pulled the strings. But looking at their response, maybe not.
Anyway, what about a drama, I don't know writer and director, and not sure I'm interested by the synopsis and title, will wait for teasers (with any male lead).

  • I want him to have a comeback, but I feel like it may be too much jumping into a ML role in a rom-com opposite Han Ji-min a mere 2 months after the "controversy". I feel it may be better to ease into it. Like a meaty role with just the barest tease of romance first. I wonder if the current KSH thing will try to throw him under the bus and put out articles reminding everyone about the squid game thing.
