Okay, this is much better than I expected. Or maybe since my expectation was somewhere below rock bottom (yes, that is possible when dealing with the maestro toad of crazy that is producer Yu Zheng’s oeuvre), something that looks simple and lovely actually has the ability to instill hope back in me for the upcoming drama adaptation of Tong Hua’s novel Yun Zhong Ge (Song in the Cloud). This drama has a different name of The Great Han Dynasty Love Story and has already gotten SARFT approval so I wouldn’t be surprised it ends up airing before the long-completed Da Mo Yao (Ballad of the Desert), which is actually the direct prequel to YZG but the two dramas are being produced by rival companies (Yu Zheng as YZG while Tangren did DMY) so narratively they are probably being de-coupled. I’ve been overall disappointed with the casting but have come to terms with it, for some reason I was way more upset with the casting of DMY and still feel really off about seeing Eddie Peng as Huo Qu Bing and Hu Ge as Meng Jiu and that feeling continued all through the filming of DMY and seeing the stills.
The first unofficial peek at YZG is out and it shows leads Angelababy (Yang Ying) as Yun Ge and Du Chun as Meng Jue filming two scenes on the streets of capital city Chang An. I absolutely love Angelababy’s styling – the simple hair, the easy-going green-and-white Han style robe (it looks like a kimono because the Japanese kimono was rumored to have been inspired by the Han dynasty dress robes), and her fresh-faced energetic look. Very Yun Ge. Du Chun still looks way too old for Meng Jue and the bun head doesn’t help, not to mention the streak of white in his hair doesn’t look right on him. We also get the first look at Yang Rong as Huo Cheng Jun doing a scene with her dad Huo Guang and oomph they both look the part and absolutely fantastic. Knowing Chen Xiao plays Liu Bing Yi makes me way more excited to see how Yu Zheng styles that hottie, my guess is a cross between his gone-bad Lin Ping Zi in The Swordsman and his prince character in Female Prime Minister, but all raggedly since Liu Bing Yi starts off a street hooligan. Lu Yi as Liu Fu Ling hasn’t arrived at the set up but I’m eager to see if he looks the part.

WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO MY MENG JUE????? He looks so old and why is the white hair there? Is that meant to make him look wise? Gosh. It made him old instead Liu fuling and meng jue are my fave characters and yet chen xiao is not playing any of them. Sighhh. Anyway im alright with the casting of angelababy because I think she's a pretty plastic girl. Oops :x

The costumes are beautiful. A Japanese friend told me that a lot of their culture comes from China. Till 1900 Japan looked to China for everything and after that turned its eyes westward.

I'm excited with Chen Xiao as Liu Bing Yi.
I guess it's the same feeling I had when I knew that my dearest Hu Ge asked to be Meng Jiu. I'm actually happy that they are breaking out of the stereotypes the industry or their companies have set for them coz that means they want to grow as actors. I can imagine Hu Ge as xiao Huo but then that also means that he has been playing such roles for too long.
Side note: I don't care about the cast preferences anymore. In fact I can live with Eddie peng as xiao Huo coz he's quite delicious to loom at too. I just want my Da Mo Yao to come on screen. It has been a too-long wait sob sob
