Oh %*#&! This casting news makes the earlier news of Changmin possibly doing his first sageuk role with Scholar Who Walks the Night sound like a brilliant casting coup. Hyeri of dol group Girl’s Day is reportedly in talks for the female lead of upcoming tvN drama Answer Me 1988, the third drama in the popular Answer Me series. The AN series isn’t known for casting actresses with established acclaimed acting track records, Answer Me 1997 was Jung Eun Ji of Apink‘s first drama acting role while Go Ara was widely considered a flower vase who couldn’t act until her breakout with Answer Me 1994. With that said, I have seen Hyeri act and she is AWFUL. Terrible, monotonous, mildly dense, devoid of any onscreen charisma, basically she’s the black hole vortex of suck when it comes to acting, even compared to other idols turned actors. I cannot fathom what the AM production is thinking in offering her a role in the drama, much less the leading lady role. Count me out if she’s in.
Right now the only confirmed cast members of AM1988 are returning veterans Sung Dong Il and Lee Il Hwa, making it their third go-around playing parents to the kids in the show. Their third return trip is a little bit too wink-wink cutesy and getting tired for me, the second time was already rather precious but since I love their great chemistry and warmth as the parents it didn’t bother me that much. Now I’m wondering if they will be the best thing about the cast if the production is working around Hyeri as the female lead.
I don’t know what Hyeri is like as a person, or her talents as a singer in Girl’s Day, but watching her act in Hyde, Jekyll, Me is like pulling teeth + nails on chalkboard bad. I was hoping she would return to her singing career after Hyde, never to return to acting, so the thought that she’s not only going to continue acting but vault to leading lady status has me doing Edvard Munch’s The Scream. The only thing to make this nightmare go away is if she declines the offer.
When all eyes are on you then you either vault over the pressure or crumble.…

Ugh what's up with dramas castings lately?
She is just not interesting. Not anyone I want to spend time listening to.
Suzy may not be the best actress, for example, but she's got something.
Oh well, I may have been Chilbongie burned too badly to watch another Reply. It still hurts.
Well, at least you'll be able to see him with Kang Sora in the new Hong sisters drama... good casting news to balance out the bad :-)
Oops, by 'him' I meant Yoo Yeon Seok!
Suzy got something alright.. she got LMH!
bwahahaha
oh gosh! in another life, I want to be casting director for dramaland LOL
I heard Lee Young Ae comes back to dramaland ..
hope to read more about this news :D :D
I know she's likable and on fire in Korea in terms of popularity, but this boggles my mind. I hope they at least had her audition and didn't just hand it to her on a silver platter. Also, this is totally irrelevant, but I do wish they had made girls from more unpopular girl groups audition. If any of them had shown a real spark, it could've ignited some real nobodies to fame, which is a narrative I always like to see. Rainbow, Dal Shabet, Nine Muses, etc could've really used it.
Goodness. She's terrible though. There are tons of underrated and far more talented young actresses out there like Jung Somin or Kim Jiwon. Why not them? I don't get it. Lol
OMG, how can you have the same thought with me. THat's two most underrated actress though they are my favorites. They should have given more lead roles. I dont know why Kim Jiwon always given not very challenging supporting roles like Tothebeautifulyou and heirs. I miss them, i hope they will be cast as lead roles again soon
agreed! I don't understand either why they are keep casting an idol who-not-so-good- at acting, because there are so many young talented actress with great acting skill. *sigh*
but, at least we have two Jung So Min's movies this year! and I kinda missing Kim Jiwon, tho :(
Go Ara did have good acting reputation before AM94, but at least her acting was 100x better than Hyeri.
typo
*didn't
As if people weren't put off by another Reply series, this casting sounds just awful. I watched Hyeri in Seonam Girls High and she played the obnoxious, too into herself character which you'd think would be perfect for her ;P yet her acting was still bad and awkward.
If it was for a minor role, i get it but as the main lead? she doesn't have the acting chops and I don't think she'd be able to pull it off.
Kim Jiwon would be a good choice or perhaps Yoobi since she just turned down School 2015. I honestly don't understand why they keep trying to cast idols with little acting expeirence for leads. I'd rather watch a rookie actor/actress. At least they'd know what they were doing.
Jo Boa! Hyeri is very flat in HJM. Her entire story line there would have been best left edited out.
I think I'll pass on this series...
If you want to know her 'talents' as a singer, just watch the legendary Problem performance by Girls Day & Ailee.

lmao, what is this. Does she excels in dancing or anything else to save her life?
Once you peel back the plastic surgery, the costuming, props, lighting and makeup, most idols have about as much talent as your average scrawny high schooler warbling in a karaoke bar.
To think that they can act, on top of their other non-existent talents, just proves the triumph of modern marketing.
