I remember the rise of the fusion youth sageuk in the early 2010’s, I would probably pin it around The Moon Embraces the Sun and perhaps foreshadowed by Dong Yi. The latter had a male lead king in his thirties but the female lead was very young and played young onscreen while the former had a super young male lead as the king but was supposed to be older onscreen. Prior to that sageuks were serious stuff and kings were all old dudes and even the princes were thirty-something manly guys for the most part. But with the rise of pretty boy sageuks now it feels like been there done that. When I see the latest poster for Our Blooming Youth with Park Hyung Sik and Jeon So Nee it’s like plucked out of the same/similar scene from easily a half dozen romance sageuks in the last few years. And even with a gender reversed one recently. With that said, if done right I still looooooove it and swoon at all the right beats. Please be that done right one to start of 2023 right for me!
