I still think Disney+ despite getting some promising K-dramas in the last two years has a LONG way to go to catch up to Netflix in terms of international access to K-dramas on streaming. Even Viki is bigger. That’s why I get nervous when a high profile K-drama is produced and will stream solely on Disney+, it feels like it’s never going to get a chance to breakout. But then again, tiny cable drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo broke out so anything can happen. Here are the first stills for sci-fi K-drama Moving with Jo In Sung, Han Hyo Joo, and Ryu Seung Ryong, playing parents protecting teen children with super powers from harm. Every time I see a drama marked for Disney, I get sad. They have such tiny, limited availability, they aren't even aired in the country Disney is originally from (the US). What is even the point of acquiring/producing a show if you don't understand the worldwide Kdrama viewership and don't market to them??
I must agree. When I see a drama on the Disney+ service I am discouraged. This drama will never be respected. It is just an add on by a corporate fool who never loved a Kdrama or a Cdrama. Late to the party douchebags.
I have the same apprehension whenever I here Disney+ has exclusive rights to an upcoming anticipated KDrama. It's like you can see the potential global buzz going right out the window. I think people expect these shows to pop up on Disney+ in the US and just give up when they never appear. It's seems most of these dramas are going to HULU instead where they honestly feel like an afterthought.
Whilst Netflix has promoted kdramas to a bigger world audience, I also feel it has negatively affected the kdrama genre with its desire to make everything into shorter "seasons". Disney + at least hasn't done that (yet), but I guess give them time and they will too.
I prefer the more standard 12-20 episodes, story done, so I watch them mostly on Viki.
