Wang Yibo’s Next Romance Movie The Mermaid Reportedly Will Star 17-year Old Second Generation Star Huang Duo Duo as the Female Lead

So this is making waves in C-ent this week and we’ll have to see if it ends up happening. Wang Yibo has been attached to the romance movie The Mermaid, not to be confused with the Stephen Chow directed movie of the same name, since last year and it’s now gaining steam to head into production. The female lead in talks is reportedly Huang Duo Duo (Christine Huang), the 17 year old (turning 18 next month in Feb) daughter of veteran entertainer Huang Lei. From what I gather she’s like the female equivalent of Chen Fei Yu so obviously there will be nepo baby comments if she is cast. She’s also super young and not sure it’s a good idea for her first major project to be a big budget movie. I’m scratching my head here and more curious now with this casting melon dropped.

  • If she's FL, I hope she's playing his daughter? LOL She does not look old enough to play a love interest. That's disturbing if she ended up being his love interest.

    • It's a love interest according to the original script.

Actually her father is now financing the whole movie so basically this is now all for her.

      • .......I don't have a problem with them being 9 years apart, it would just be better if she was over 18.

  • It's actually very simple.

Nobody wants to finance Mermaid and Yuehua can't either because they are in a terrible financial situation. So they either accept her daddy's money or they continue to linger in limbo. I would still refuse but they will make their choice. Melons say there accepted.

Yibo is still attached to this because he doesn't have any other offers.

  • 17? That is way too young to be his love interest. Feels kind of icky. Can't see many people being supportive of that.

  • I thought this was a sequel to that 2016 movie. I remember watching that movie and the ML was just so much older than the FL and FL looked so.much youbger than her age. On top of that they had kissing scenes too. Why is it so hard to find 20+ FL?

    • Because the movie doesn't have a financial backer who will pay for it.

Well now it does and you get a minor who has never acted as the FL.

  • His agency has been struggling to keep its head above water. HK financial news reported not long ago the agency's stock price fell almost 80% within a few days for some reasons. Then the following days Weibo was inundated by hot searches ALL about Wang Yibo's activities. His boss appeared to tap into his popularity again hopefully to calm investors down. WYB still has a rabid following of fangirls. I'm sure they will make his movie a buzz regardless of any issues or his consistently bad acting.

  • OMG, he secure Huang Lei's daughter in the movie?? Huang Lei and a batch of his best mates are part of a strong veteran group of artistes. They have connection, good reputation and respected projects to secure a stable place in this industry.

Many male newbies like to be under their wings...but they are choosy. Lay Zhang is one under their wings...Wang Yibo worked with Huang Bo(One of the best mates) in a number of project...looks like he may be edging i to the circle too.

There are different circles in the industry...as with many Countries...It is all about like minded artistes who clicks...some of these groups becomes strong and quite powerful.

I am aware Huang Lei have been helping his daughter into the industry since she has shown interest at a young age.. to secure a role in a movie with Wang Yibo...that is very telling.

I just wonder if it is true...if it is, I hope she is mentally strong as Wang Yibo's fandom(some of the bad eggs, not all) are infamous for being very possessive of him. This young girl who is no stranger to cyber bullying as Huang Lei's daughter, better to prepared to ignore those crazy bullies.

As much as I will caution her, if she cannot act, i will not feel sorry for honest reviews. She wants the role, she better deliver to a certain standard. Wang Yibo is not a great actor, I do wonder what can come out of this.

    • You do realise this is not a good thing? Right?

I am unsure what has gotten you going when it's just another nepo baby, who isn't even an adult, whose daddy is buying her a movie. A romance one with an adult male.

The only reason this is happening is because Yuehua has no money and they are farming out.

      • To be honest, in some Countries...connection is true power and used very often. In some, there is more fairness...China is about connection. Very sad but that is how they work.

I dont agree with it at all...but that is a fact.

    • Are you seriously D riding a millionaire who is buying his daughter a whole ass movie as if there are no other talented people around and presenting that as a good thing?

      Yikes.

      • Do I sound like I am happy? If my dad was so good to me, I will be happy. I can bet daddy will be on site watching the whole process..but it is his investment. Who know if this will be a worthy investment?

Since Wang Yibo need the investment, it is their choice at accept or not.

      • That user's probably one of those older Chinese ladies who thinks nepotism is a given in society so it's OK to support nepobabies since they have "pedigree". A lot of Chinese people move to the West but still believe in classism and "pedigree" aka if someone's dad is rich they are worthy of befriending and supporting. You see this all the time in overseas Chinese communities.

As for Huang Lei's daughter, she's popular in China due to that Daddy Where Are You Going show that got banned for monetizing celebrity kids. Huang Lei has always tried to show off his kids by putting them on shows, enrolling them in expensive schools and letting them hobnob with famous musicians so he's going to make her a celebrity no matter what since he writes scripts. I just laugh at the Chinese public notion that he's a "model dad", he is very pushy and you can tell the parents want them to gain liuliang because his kids post videos of themselves baking with hair and makeup done, filmed by someone else. A lot of kids look up to her as a celebrity's kid though so sadly nepotism does work in China.

    • Finally an honest Wang Yibo fan that is excited about a new opportunity for leeching and getting ahead thanks to money.

      Hats off for your honesty!

      • Not a fan of Wang Yibo...dont dislike him either. I only watched him in Untamed and Street dance of China but both was not due to him...
I am not excited for him...but I am just making aloud my observation.

If this movie does will as his movie with Huang Bo failed. who knows, it may be the lift he needs to get his career back on rack.

This industry is tough, since he is in it...he is clearly willing to play the games.

    • He will be in trouble because they have been cleaning up after him for years.

He is already in trouble actually because he can't get a new role for months now. It's the only reason why he is so tied to this movie, he has no other options. He has been auditioning and failing repeatedly. Nobody wants a ticking time bomb and YH is rapidly losing the money needed to keep up appearances.

      • I am aware his Chinese is not great... he is not a great actor...but what did he actually do to make him high risk? He was very popular and was in many variety shows just afew years ago. I dont understand how did he loss it all? did he not film a movie with Tony Leung? the movie did okay.. or did it not? I like Tony Leung but did not watch this film. Tony did not help market this film at all...

      • Exactly @ HL what did he really do wrong for him to be in trouble, I mean he is not a great actor but he is serviceable n his recent movie did well, why is he a ticking time bomb, he has such a large fan base too, this doesn't make sense to me, unless he is just not taking any projects given to him but he is being picky on a particular project he want to play that why he is not getting those role. I mean when the company goes bankrupt can't he move to another company n continues his career like others do

  • Can he even convincingly woo a woman on screen? He has such a cavalier attitude in real life + his last lovey dovey type drama was “The Untamed”, sooooo… tbd…

Him and his former co-star have yet to be convincing as leading men in love with leading ladies after “The Untamed”, so meh, I’m curious.

(Also, I’ve taught seniors in high school before, and those beings are honestly babies 🤷🏻‍♂️ regardless of what the “legal” adult age is.)

    • Personnal and honestly I feel if he try his best to shed of that BL CP and mute it for good by playing a convincing romantic interest it will do his career wonders. He is an actor n I want to believe whatever personality he has can be put at the back burner n do justice to the character of the role is given, ie if he is serious in his crafts. He doesn't need to change his personality to make it happen. After all him playing the role, he will be pretending to be someone else .

      • @Mercy, LOL. Delusional! WYB doesn't have talent nor is he motivated for acting. His poor acting records have nothing to do with the Untamed whatsoever but he was just lucky to take a free ride to stardom on XZ's brilliance performance as legendary Wei Wuxian that made the drama a huge hit both inside and outside China. He's only pushed into acting franchise by his greedy agency cos that's more profitable than dancing. He should just stay as a dancer and then ppl will respect him more. How could illiterate ppl read and understand scripts? LOL.

    • @lu - I don't think your comment is very fair to his former co-star in The Untamed because that actor is a very good actor and a very convincing Leading Man, I like the drama he made with Yang Zi. WYB cannot act. A true actor can shed any BL CP image because it is just acting.

      • @lu

Sparks were flying during Ool. XCS and HHL were so hot together in WDB. You didn't see it because you don't want to see it. Don't be embarrassing.

    • I find this comment incredibly funny because just a few days ago there was a collective panty drop on Weibo just from a minute long footage of XZ looking at JGY.

      Be less homophobic please.

      • A person’s love to give is a person’s love to give.

        I’m talking strictly drama.

I haven’t seen either of them bleed chemistry—even just synergy—with their/a leading lady in any of their other dramas. I actually think Yibo intentionally chose dramas without romance. They’re like Gong Jun—nice looking fellow, but absolutely wooden when acting with a leading lady. Lol. Gong Jun actually seems like he knows how to do playful back-and-forths in real life with those same leading lady co-stars, but on screen, sheeeeesh.

In Chinese dramaland, romance is do or die for most actors and actresses. Maybe ONE drama in an actor or actress’ acting lifetime will actually be a solid drama lol, so yeah, I’d say these two need to prove themselves with at least one solid, heavier on the romance story with a leading lady 🤷🏻‍♂️

      • @lu

Why do actors have to do romance? Talk about nonsense. Your own personal wishes have no bearing on people's careers. Koala's blog isn't a wishing well.

Not to mention XZ had amazing chemistry with the FL2 of Youth Memories that is a very serious drama. You keep moving the goal posts but that doesn't work, sorry.

      • I’m someone who understands the Chinese dramaland landscape. I've had plenty of conversations with students about a variety of topics, so I think I can handle myself. You trying to mesh homosexuality with my point about the two actors (who just happened to be in an uber popular bl drama) is fascinating.

    • @Lu, LOL. So you basically dismissed Yang Zi as a leading lady who had swoony chemistry with Xiao Zhan to the extent many rabid CP fans of the Untamed attacked Yang Zi non-stop due to bitterness LOL, and to the extent there's a huge cohort of CP fans of Oath of Love who have been taking reel for real, still fantasizing Xiao Zhan and Yang Zi dating in real life until today. LOL. You're so ignorant. WYB can't act nor has any chemistry with his leading ladies. It doesn't mean his costar in the Untamed is in the same league as he. Xiao Zhan has left WYB far behind by miles both in popularity and acting recognition since they filmed the Untamed. Your deduction is so weird.

      • Dude, I never watched it. Lol. So… sorry? I just tuned in to a couple clips, and ok. Maybe now he has a decent modern drama with some chemistry with a decent actress. He can check “decent romance drama” off his list now. Hopefully he can choose worthy projects in the future. I don’t think he’s broken out as a superstar actor yet, personally, so I’m still curious.

      • @lu

You are so transparent it's funny.

First you say he doesn't have chemistry with his leading ladies and then when proven incorrect, you pretend you haven't watched it.

He had chemistry with Yang Zi and especially with the second FL in Youth Memories.

He has absolutely broken out as an actor and especially thanks to that drama where he is already getting awarded for his portrayal of XCS.

You can keep denying it all but you better wake up and stop wasting your time with that nonsense because reality doesn't change just because you wish it so. He is a recognised actor who yes, has chemistry with his female costars. Cope.

      • Lol. I honestly have not seen the drama. The only thing you “proved me wrong” about was that he had decent chemistry with Yangzi. I didn’t even care for Yangzi until recently, thus, I never cared to go back and do a deep dive into his or her dramas. Thankfully, XZ was acting with Yangzi who has a natural acting style that I actually enjoy enough, because it helps to generate chemistry, so good for him for being paired with her, and good for them for making something happen. So yeah, fine, you found ONE drama he seemed convincingly in love with a lady lead. Good. He can check it off his list of things for Chinese actors to achieve. (Be for real, we know how censorship and Chinese dramaland and watchers limit their actors and actresses.)

Just a PSA: The actors and actresses we like are SUBJECTIVE. Stop defending them to hell and back. Lol.

I haven’t enjoyed XZ’s acting because he does more performance style acting vs. natural. My bias will always be for people who can act like they’re actually Right There in the moment and make me feel like they Actually Exist somewhere in the world, living their lives.

Relax, girl. Lol. We’ll be alright.

      • @lu, FYI in case you're not up to date about Cdrama. Xiao Zhan is now one of the (if not the most) sought-after A-list actor in China. All his three dramas premiered in 2023 got good ratings and reviews from pro critics (note that not antifans LOL). Among them, the Youth Memories (a non-idol period drama) have been nominated for different categories several times and have been on air for the 15th run that has spelt out a lot about both the quality and popularity of the drama. It's a both acclaimed and commercially successful drama. Is Xiao Zhan a great actor? Casting him as the ML of Condor Heroes movie and the currently filmed drama, the Legend of Zhanhai already told you the answer. He IS cos both directors of the movie and the new drama are not industry nugus but very reputable and iconic film makers in C-ent. They don't randomly cast someone as their MLs. LOL

      • @lu, would you mind giving examples what actors' acting appreciate? Then I can have a better picture about your preference. Otherwise I think you're just critical of XZ for the purpose of being critical and I won't take you seriously.

BTW you should expect fans to defend praise their faves to the galaxy once their faves are criticized. What's wrong with that? LOL. I don't believe you'll keep your mouth shut if your faves are criticized.

      • I wish I spoke Chinese to know how each of these actors and actresses deliver their lines, but I don't, so everything I say about non-English dramas starts with that as my disclaimer. (I do follow a Chinese drama reviewer whose opinion I really respect on youtube, though, to tell me about the nuances of the language... and the intricacies of the production process and China's uhm... limitations...). Not only that, my background is that I was an English teacher until recently, so dissecting stories and characters was my actual job where I was expected to teach kids and teenagers how to do it too. I also write.

        Here we go:

With acting, what I believe makes an actor actually great is THEIR VOICE. So, to start, if any of these Chinese actors or actresses don't dub their own performance, I've already knocked them down a peg. You are NOT a great performer without Your Own Voice! Lol. (As much as I enjoyed "Fairy and Devil", dang... heavy on the voice for carrying Dylan Wang... and then for "Word of Honor" as well... the story was soooo good, but Gong Jun's dubber put in WORK!! You see these two actors being actually not good in other productions where they use their own voices, EEP.)

As for acting style and chemistry, there are very few actors or actresses who can generate chemistry with E V E R Y O N E they're in a scene with, and I think it's because they act in a natural/realistic style. Respect to Yangzi for "Lost You Forever" where her interactions with each of the characters felt raw and real, men AND women. Like, why am I so IN your emotions and thought process right now, even when I think you're being irrational or straight up stupid sometimes!?! (Also, I didn't even know the three actors who are her leading men in "LYF" existed until I watched the drama, so I'm not giving her credit because of them! Lol. Although they ARE good too though! 2 more than 1 of them. Haha.) And for someone like Liu Yu Ning, who I did not care for before his latest drama (and I've attempted a lot of the dramas he was second male lead in) to convince me to continue following his acting career, it took chemistry with everyone he was acting in a scene with to hook me. In "A Journey to Love", he could act one-on-one with any of the characters and sell to me that his character had some depth of relationship with each of those characters--the female lead, his crew of friends, the princess/prince, his enemies, that official who forced him to go on the journey to begin with lol. And then there's Wu Lei and Zhao Lusi in "Love Like the Galaxy". Listen, I'm NOT EVEN A FAN of the two!!! Lol. I've never finished ONE drama of theirs individually. The only drama I ever finished for the both of them was the one they were in together. Ha! Daaannnngg... Wu Lei oozed sooooo much love/infatuation lol for Zhao Lusi's character, and then Zhao Lusi, her emotions about, not only, love, but, life in general... wow. It was really their two talents partnered together that actually created real chemistry and made the story. (At first... I didn't even think his looks and her voice fit... just to be proved wrong.) Anyone else in those roles, and it wouldn't have been the hit that it was. And then you put their separate characters' two stories together and I was CONVINCED of their characters' love for each other. Towards the end when Wu Lei stabs that evil bad guy (and makes the evil guy realize how foolish he is about the evil things he's been doing when the bad guy's eyes flicker for a second) and then he yells for his troops to move towards the village where Zhao Lusi's character is getting attacked and the camera pulls back on his face rushing forward, OOF!!! OKAY. That guy is in love! Lol. Zhao Lusi did a great job being raw too--aloof, adoring, vulnerable, courageous when she had to be. It just worked because the two understood their characters separately, and then when they came together, MAGIC. These four actors I see performing with a natural/realistic style that pushes their characters. (When Zhao Lusi had to act AGAINST her style in that stupid xianxia drama "The Last Immortal", omgah, it was so bad.) Ohhhhhh, also, I typically like the actors and actresses in secondary roles because they act with more realism than the leads. Ha!

Anyways, if we're talking English speaking, I can confidently say Robert Downey Jr.'s style of acting ALWAYS convinces me that his characters exist somewhere in this universe or another.

I guess I had time today LOL.

      • @lu, now I see how different you're from me in assessing acting just based upon the examples you described. Thank you for sharing. But as someone who speak ,read Chinese perfectly, and am familiar with traditional Chinese culture, art, and history as well, I stand by my reviews of C dramas, various types of acting and different Chinese actors. Since you don't speak Chinese, sorry I can't think highly of your personal preferences of Cdramas or C actors. For example, Yang Zi is a very boring actress to me. Not saying her acting is bad but she is just boring. She's been taking almost the same roles throughout different dramas for years. The genres she exposed her acting to have been pretty limited. She's not versatile. And I consider versatility an important element of a great actor. All her characters speak one dull image and one single persona, i.e. actress Yang Zi herself, not her characters. LOL. She hasn't been able to diversify her acting range and only stuck with idol dramas. From that perspective, she's not a great actress to me.

Welp, drama is about entertainment. It's just one kind of commercial market. There're different dramas, different genres, and different actors to cater for different viewers with different tastes. We do not have the same or similar taste. That's for sure and totally fine. Just continue to enjoy what you like and I'll have fun with my own preferences. LOL.

      • Lol @lmao. Because I give her credit for ONE role does not mean I'm in love with her. HAHAHAHHAHAHAH. So irrational. I never liked her based purely on aesthetics (because I'm sometimes shallow like that when it comes to entertainment lol), but her performance in "LYF" was solid. She is, like what @Somebody mentioned, one dimensional, but I like how she plays into certain moments to elicit, not just sympathy, but, empathy out of me. Gotta give it up to the girl. How do you balance creating gripping enough interactions with THREE incredibly different males leads? LIKE YANGZI did in "LYF"! Lol. Get a grip, girl. The first word I used to describe her in this thread was "decent" lol

And yes, @Somebody, we have a weird knee-jerk reaction to certain performers, negative or positive--I think--due to who we, ourselves, are, where we come from, and what we've experienced. I'm still waiting to be awed by your fave. And many others! Lol. I'm always happy to be pleasantly surprised by a story and performer. (I couldn't stand "Fairy and Devil" when it first came out because of the leads AND the slow and sloppy start to the story, but when I went back to it after quitting teaching and when I wanted to reflect on the hardships of my personal and professional life that had eaten away at my soul for far too long, the story of "Devil" (and Fairy's support of him) spoke loudly and deeply to me and moved me a year later).

I don't need anyone to think highly of my opinion lol that's why I just voice my opinion because I can explain where I stand and why, and I'm open to people standing where they are with their explanation.

Ultimately, I'm just looking for a circular story that uses its characters to move me through their words and actions... which is not found in Chinese dramas most of the time... lol. I for sure just fast forward through Chinese dramas for some quick feels. Haha. I do eagerly anticipate finding gems in Chinese dramaland though!

      • @lu, you have explained enough about yourself with long ass essays. LOL. You mentioned another C drama, Fairy and Devil, which I had trouble going beyond ep3 regardless of how many times I tried my life out to watch the drama. LOL. I couldn't stand Esther Yu in that drama and I still can't stand her in all her dramas following F&D. Once again it just proves your taste of Cdramas suck IMO. Sorry no offense! I'm speaking from my perspectives as someone who understand Chinese language, culture, and art pretty well. I'm more a Kdrama fan than a Cdrama fan since in average, Kdrama has better production quality. When it comes to C drama, I'm very picky and selective. I'm a busy and accomplished professional and don't squander time on crap or talking sh*t or entertaining trolls. A lot of your comments about Xiao Zhan just don't make sense to me and they appear to be baseless, merely your personal bigotry.

      • @HL

        Awww zimmies banding together.

Too bad your pathetic plastic water queen remains a pathetic water queen no matter how much you attack other people. No wonder you agree with your homophobic friend there. Peas in a pod.

      • @lmao

Lu is just another toilet. Ignore her, this is what they do. When ever WYB is in trouble, they turn around the conversation towards XZ and attack him.

It's not worth it, they aren't called toilets for nothing you know.

      • @Somebody, go breathe in some fresh open air. Lol. I’m not so arrogant to proclaim that a Chinese person who can’t speak English can’t be critical of English speaking productions, so yes, you and I are different 😂

      • @lu, you are finally exposed, once proving yourself useless troll rambling long ass crap. LOL. Go fantasize and save your own fave who's gradually fading away and will become irrelevant soon! Stop shifting attention to Xiao Zhan!

    • @lu - I don't know what kind of teacher you are... I hope you understand that for anything you comment, please first RESEARCH on the topic. You sound so ignorant about XZ and YZ status in C-drama history. The worst is you "pretend" you know but actually you do not. Please stop teaching. LOL.

      • Lol! I did stop teaching! Highly do not recommend! I quit at my prime. And yes, my students loved to hate me because they loved me. That’s what high expectations will do. I didn’t leave because of them though!

Annnnyyyways, I simply don’t enjoy your actors acting or their works (largely because of their acting). They’re serviceable, like many actors and actresses in many dramas, but they just don’t move me, or have YET to move me. Maybe one day? If that day comes, I’ll talk them up 🤷🏻‍♂️

So emotional up in here. Lol

      • @lu

Thank goodness you don't teach anyone.

Imagine having a toxic homophobic teacher like you. Poor kids.

      • @Relief hehe, you’ll never know the friends I saved soooooo… continue being a rabid fan to mostly average C-actors who do mostly dull and meaningless productions for a couple of bucks lol

    • @Relief hehe, you’ll never know the friends I saved sooooo… continue being a rabid fan of mostly average C-actors who do mostly bland and fruitless productions for a couple of bucks lol

      • And I absolutely meant "dull and meaningless" and "bland and fruitless"... thus is the narrative of the current state of Chinese entertainment... but these actors and actresses, good or bad, are cashing in above all regular citizens, so by alllll means, EAT IT UP lol

    • @Lu, You Go Gal!!
You have made some very good and valid points, I may not agree with them all but I still enjoy how you hold your ground here! Well Done!!

      • @HL Lol yes, I taught my kids to argue/make a claim and defend it better than the uhm… name calling… ha

If anything @lol, I’m being the opposite of homophobic. I said the last project they really had some more believable chemistry in was “The Untamed”! Lol.

The “in between the lines” you failed to read in my first post was this: Chinese dramaland requires that actors and actresses do dramas that have romance between a man and a women because Chinese POLITICS don’t conform to progressive times, ie. they are not openly supportive of homosexual couples/pairings. Unfortunately, being in romance dramas keep actors and actresses on pay roll, regardless of if they or we, as the audience, believe they can perform outside of sappy romances. THAT is the Chinese entertainment landscape. Every once in a blue moon, there are actually solid stories told inside of the constraints the government has put on expression in China.

Since you couldn’t figure out what I was saying with nuance, THERE. Lol

      • Ah @lu,you must be new around here to think that people actually wanted to discuss opinions on acting instead of baiting you. No answer would have satisfied this audience, even though none of these actors are universally agreed to be great.

This post is an example of why some people don't bother watching or discussing certain projects. It's not fun or interesting when different preferences are stifled.

  • 9 year age difference would be less of a problem if she wasn't still a teenager. The fact that she looks even younger than 17 doesn't help either, but is not the main issue. The main issue remains that he's an adult and she's not. There's a sad but true fact that talent alone doesn't guarantee that you'll get opportunities. You also need to be lucky. She was lucky enough to be born to a father who can afford to get her an opportunity. Whether she has actual talent to back it up will become apparent. He was also lucky in his own way, because it's definitely not his acting talent that got him this job. This is true for every country, not only China, so I'm not sure why people are so surprised.

  • I have only watched Yibo in The Untamed so I am not really a fan. In addition, he always looks pissed, which I find kind of annoying. However, I kind of feel sorry for him, in the sense that he gets a lot of hatred when he doesn't seem to do anything that wrong, and that he has some real awful fans. I will feel even sorrier for him if his agency is indeed going bankrupt. I hope he can sort all this out. As for the girl, which father would want to expose her to so much criticism, plus Yibo's rabid Fandom? Even if she's technically an adult (guys turning 18 in February means she be an adult starting next week or something).
