So this is making waves in C-ent this week and we’ll have to see if it ends up happening. Wang Yibo has been attached to the romance movie The Mermaid, not to be confused with the Stephen Chow directed movie of the same name, since last year and it’s now gaining steam to head into production. The female lead in talks is reportedly Huang Duo Duo (Christine Huang), the 17 year old (turning 18 next month in Feb) daughter of veteran entertainer Huang Lei. From what I gather she’s like the female equivalent of Chen Fei Yu so obviously there will be nepo baby comments if she is cast. She’s also super young and not sure it’s a good idea for her first major project to be a big budget movie. I’m scratching my head here and more curious now with this casting melon dropped.
If she’s FL, I hope she’s playing his daughter? LOL She does not look old enough to play a love interest. That’s disturbing if she ended up being his love interest.

I thought this was a sequel to that 2016 movie. I remember watching that movie and the ML was just so much older than the FL and FL looked so.much youbger than her age. On top of that they had kissing scenes too. Why is it so hard to find 20+ FL?

His agency has been struggling to keep its head above water. HK financial news reported not long ago the agency’s stock price fell almost 80% within a few days for some reasons. Then the following days Weibo was inundated by hot searches ALL about Wang Yibo’s activities. His boss appeared to tap into his popularity again hopefully to calm investors down. WYB still has a rabid following of fangirls. I’m sure they will make his movie a buzz regardless of any issues or his consistently bad acting.
OMG, he secure Huang Lei’s daughter in the movie?? Huang Lei and a batch of his best mates are part of a strong veteran group of artistes. They have connection, good reputation and respected projects to secure a stable place in this industry.
Many male newbies like to be under their wings…but they are choosy. Lay Zhang is one under their wings…Wang Yibo worked with Huang Bo(One of the best mates) in a number of project…looks like he may be edging i to the circle too.
There are different circles in the industry…as with many Countries…It is all about like minded artistes who clicks…some of these groups becomes strong and quite powerful.
I am aware Huang Lei have been helping his daughter into the industry since she has shown interest at a young age.. to secure a role in a movie with Wang Yibo…that is very telling.
I just wonder if it is true…if it is, I hope she is mentally strong as Wang Yibo’s fandom(some of the bad eggs, not all) are infamous for being very possessive of him. This young girl who is no stranger to cyber bullying as Huang Lei’s daughter, better to prepared to ignore those crazy bullies.

That user’s probably one of those older Chinese ladies who thinks nepotism is a given in society so it’s OK to support nepobabies since they have “pedigree”. A lot of Chinese people move to the West but still believe in classism and “pedigree” aka if someone’s dad is rich they are worthy of befriending and supporting. You see this all the time in overseas Chinese communities.
As for Huang Lei’s daughter, she’s popular in China due to that Daddy Where Are You Going show that got banned for monetizing celebrity kids. Huang Lei has always tried to show off his kids by putting them on shows, enrolling them in expensive schools and letting them hobnob with famous musicians so he’s going to make her a celebrity no matter what since he writes scripts. I just laugh at the Chinese public notion that he’s a “model dad”, he is very pushy and you can tell the parents want them to gain liuliang because his kids post videos of themselves baking with hair and makeup done, filmed by someone else. A lot of kids look up to her as a celebrity’s kid though so sadly nepotism does work in China.
Finally an honest Wang Yibo fan that is excited about a new opportunity for leeching and getting ahead thanks to money.

Gong Jun actually seems like he knows how to do playful back-and-forths in real life with those same leading lady co-stars, but on screen, sheeeeesh.
In Chinese dramaland, romance is do or die for most actors and actresses. Maybe ONE drama in an actor or actress’ acting lifetime will actually be a solid drama lol, so yeah, I’d say these two need to prove themselves with at least one solid, heavier on the romance story with a leading lady 🤷🏻♂️

@lu, FYI in case you’re not up to date about Cdrama. Xiao Zhan is now one of the (if not the most) sought-after A-list actor in China. All his three dramas premiered in 2023 got good ratings and reviews from pro critics (note that not antifans LOL). Among them, the Youth Memories (a non-idol period drama) have been nominated for different categories several times and have been on air for the 15th run that has spelt out a lot about both the quality and popularity of the drama. It’s a both acclaimed and commercially successful drama. Is Xiao Zhan a great actor? Casting him as the ML of Condor Heroes movie and the currently filmed drama, the Legend of Zhanhai already told you the answer. He IS cos both directors of the movie and the new drama are not industry nugus but very reputable and iconic film makers in C-ent. They don’t randomly cast someone as their MLs. LOL

I wish I spoke Chinese to know how each of these actors and actresses deliver their lines, but I don’t, so everything I say about non-English dramas starts with that as my disclaimer. (I do follow a Chinese drama reviewer whose opinion I really respect on youtube, though, to tell me about the nuances of the language… and the intricacies of the production process and China’s uhm… limitations…). Not only that, my background is that I was an English teacher until recently, so dissecting stories and characters was my actual job where I was expected to teach kids and teenagers how to do it too. I also write.
Here we go:
With acting, what I believe makes an actor actually great is THEIR VOICE. So, to start, if any of these Chinese actors or actresses don’t dub their own performance, I’ve already knocked them down a peg. You are NOT a great performer without Your Own Voice! Lol. (As much as I enjoyed “Fairy and Devil”, dang… heavy on the voice for carrying Dylan Wang… and then for “Word of Honor” as well… the story was soooo good, but Gong Jun’s dubber put in WORK!! You see these two actors being actually not good in other productions where they use their own voices, EEP.)
As for acting style and chemistry, there are very few actors or actresses who can generate chemistry with E V E R Y O N E they’re in a scene with, and I think it’s because they act in a natural/realistic style. Respect to Yangzi for “Lost You Forever” where her interactions with each of the characters felt raw and real, men AND women. Like, why am I so IN your emotions and thought process right now, even when I think you’re being irrational or straight up stupid sometimes!?! (Also, I didn’t even know the three actors who are her leading men in “LYF” existed until I watched the drama, so I’m not giving her credit because of them! Lol. Although they ARE good too though! 2 more than 1 of them. Haha.) And for someone like Liu Yu Ning, who I did not care for before his latest drama (and I’ve attempted a lot of the dramas he was second male lead in) to convince me to continue following his acting career, it took chemistry with everyone he was acting in a scene with to hook me. In “A Journey to Love”, he could act one-on-one with any of the characters and sell to me that his character had some depth of relationship with each of those characters–the female lead, his crew of friends, the princess/prince, his enemies, that official who forced him to go on the journey to begin with lol. And then there’s Wu Lei and Zhao Lusi in “Love Like the Galaxy”. Listen, I’m NOT EVEN A FAN of the two!!! Lol. I’ve never finished ONE drama of theirs individually. The only drama I ever finished for the both of them was the one they were in together. Ha! Daaannnngg… Wu Lei oozed sooooo much love/infatuation lol for Zhao Lusi’s character, and then Zhao Lusi, her emotions about, not only, love, but, life in general… wow. It was really their two talents partnered together that actually created real chemistry and made the story. (At first… I didn’t even think his looks and her voice fit… just to be proved wrong.) Anyone else in those roles, and it wouldn’t have been the hit that it was. And then you put their separate characters’ two stories together and I was CONVINCED of their characters’ love for each other. Towards the end when Wu Lei stabs that evil bad guy (and makes the evil guy realize how foolish he is about the evil things he’s been doing when the bad guy’s eyes flicker for a second) and then he yells for his troops to move towards the village where Zhao Lusi’s character is getting attacked and the camera pulls back on his face rushing forward, OOF!!! OKAY. That guy is in love! Lol. Zhao Lusi did a great job being raw too–aloof, adoring, vulnerable, courageous when she had to be. It just worked because the two understood their characters separately, and then when they came together, MAGIC. These four actors I see performing with a natural/realistic style that pushes their characters. (When Zhao Lusi had to act AGAINST her style in that stupid xianxia drama “The Last Immortal”, omgah, it was so bad.) Ohhhhhh, also, I typically like the actors and actresses in secondary roles because they act with more realism than the leads. Ha!
Anyways, if we’re talking English speaking, I can confidently say Robert Downey Jr.’s style of acting ALWAYS convinces me that his characters exist somewhere in this universe or another.

But as someone who speak ,read Chinese perfectly, and am familiar with traditional Chinese culture, art, and history as well, I stand by my reviews of C dramas, various types of acting and different Chinese actors. Since you don’t speak Chinese, sorry I can’t think highly of your personal preferences of Cdramas or C actors. For example, Yang Zi is a very boring actress to me. Not saying her acting is bad but she is just boring. She’s been taking almost the same roles throughout different dramas for years. The genres she exposed her acting to have been pretty limited. She’s not versatile. And I consider versatility an important element of a great actor. All her characters speak one dull image and one single persona, i.e. actress Yang Zi herself, not her characters. LOL. She hasn’t been able to diversify her acting range and only stuck with idol dramas. From that perspective, she’s not a great actress to me.
Welp, drama is about entertainment. It’s just one kind of commercial market. There’re different dramas, different genres, and different actors to cater for different viewers with different tastes. We do not have the same or similar taste. That’s for sure and totally fine. Just continue to enjoy what you like and I’ll have fun with my own preferences. LOL.

(I couldn’t stand “Fairy and Devil” when it first came out because of the leads AND the slow and sloppy start to the story, but when I went back to it after quitting teaching and when I wanted to reflect on the hardships of my personal and professional life that had eaten away at my soul for far too long, the story of “Devil” (and Fairy’s support of him) spoke loudly and deeply to me and moved me a year later).
I don’t need anyone to think highly of my opinion lol that’s why I just voice my opinion because I can explain where I stand and why, and I’m open to people standing where they are with their explanation.
Ultimately, I’m just looking for a circular story that uses its characters to move me through their words and actions… which is not found in Chinese dramas most of the time… lol. I for sure just fast forward through Chinese dramas for some quick feels. Haha. I do eagerly anticipate finding gems in Chinese dramaland though!

The “in between the lines” you failed to read in my first post was this: Chinese dramaland requires that actors and actresses do dramas that have romance between a man and a women because Chinese POLITICS don’t conform to progressive times, ie. they are not openly supportive of homosexual couples/pairings. Unfortunately, being in romance dramas keep actors and actresses on pay roll, regardless of if they or we, as the audience, believe they can perform outside of sappy romances. THAT is the Chinese entertainment landscape. Every once in a blue moon, there are actually solid stories told inside of the constraints the government has put on expression in China.

Ah @lu,you must be new around here to think that people actually wanted to discuss opinions on acting instead of baiting you. No answer would have satisfied this audience, even though none of these actors are universally agreed to be great.
This post is an example of why some people don’t bother watching or discussing certain projects. It’s not fun or interesting when different preferences are stifled.
9 year age difference would be less of a problem if she wasn’t still a teenager. The fact that she looks even younger than 17 doesn’t help either, but is not the main issue. The main issue remains that he’s an adult and she’s not. There’s a sad but true fact that talent alone doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get opportunities. You also need to be lucky. She was lucky enough to be born to a father who can afford to get her an opportunity. Whether she has actual talent to back it up will become apparent. He was also lucky in his own way, because it’s definitely not his acting talent that got him this job. This is true for every country, not only China, so I’m not sure why people are so surprised.
I have only watched Yibo in The Untamed so I am not really a fan. In addition, he always looks pissed, which I find kind of annoying. However, I kind of feel sorry for him, in the sense that he gets a lot of hatred when he doesn’t seem to do anything that wrong, and that he has some real awful fans. @HL I can’t say anything about how his acting is perceived in the industry, but I have to wonder if his decision to focus on movies might be a factor if he truly isn’t getting offers. The film industry is a totally different arena than dramaland. If he’s waiting for film offers, his past box office will definitely be taken into account.
His uber popularity unfortunately comes with both rabid fans and rabid antis, and both might be too much drama for a film production to have to deal with. I’ve been on sites where dramas that haven’t even aired yet get ratings of nothing but 10s and 1s. The drama industry might be willing to put up with the nonsense an actor’s fans and antis bring, but the film industry might not. Negative ratings and reviews have the potential to influence potential movie goers, which as a result can affect a film’s box office. These studios also want their films that might make their way on to the film festival circuit to be taken seriously. Any immature nonsense surrounding an actor can be picked up by the media and hurt a films chances for award nominations.
That makes sense but I want to believe that these director and producers know how these fandoms behave.it doesn’t have to be something to determine if an actor will get a job or not, that is giving the fans to much power imo. When a project is good by the end of the day no matter what actor stared in, not just fans but word of mouth could boost it popularity n for it to be received well, right. I mean it has to start from somewhere 🤷

That melon was brought from a random Douban post to Weibo and spread by all yxhs, it’s not from any industry insiders and not reliable at all, the only reason they involved that girl is because her father knows both Yibo and the director, and he was the first to comfirm that the movie is being filmed already in October last year. The real cast is still a mystery so yxhs used the opportunity and tried to force the movie’s team into revealing it. It’s also quite telling that all kind of rumors got spread soon after NYE when Yibo’s fans were able to fill the arena with over 15k seats. His real life traffic really made some people panicked. Btw, coming for Golden Rooster Award and Asian Film Award nominee’s acting won’t make your fave look any better. Sorry but the jury full of professional industry experts definitely is more objective than stans of other c-ent actor.
Hidden Blade became the highest grossing literary movie in China history, Yibo got Golden Rooster Award nomination and director Cheng Er got awarded double for directing and editing. Movie bloggers jokingly call Mermaid movie a goldfish after those achievements. But some people still want to fool others just because the movie team is being low-key on purpose.
Not sure why the blogger is lying but Mermaid isn’t a romance genre. Event if that girl has some role in the movie (most probably she doesn’t) she won’t be the first female lead and won’t have a romance plot with Yibo’s character. We don’t even knows if the movie has any romantic subplot at all.

I don’t understand how c-ent industry works. He is under an agency — it is not his own company correct? If they can’t find work for him, he can’t go to another agency? What does his agency going bankrupt have to do with him? Is he the only talent? And if he is such a risk, why is he being treated like such a high profile actor by the last awards shows etc I am not a fan, just a passersby, just genuinely wondering
WYB owns 50% of the company share and was reported to contribute around 60% to the company’s revenues. If he flops, then the company most likely would tank too. That’s how risky he’s to the agency that put almost all the eggs in one basket. The recent Chinese award shows are said to be jokes that nominations could be bought. I don’t have evidence to verify this against. But it’s very possible the agency also invested a lot in his movies to get him the roles working with those reputable veterans. Money talks. That being said, there’re many investors investing in his company after its IPO on HK stock exchange. I checked their stock prices per the news report and it was true. So many investors have stakes on the success of the company. Part of the signs of that is how heavily the company has been doing PR for WYB, specifically after their stock price dropped 80% not long ago.

Yuehua have other stars working and earning money besides WYB. WYB is not the only cash cow inside of that company bringing in money for the company. Of course, nobody earns as much as WYB. WYB is truely the gold egg.
The same can be said about XZ and company he is in.
It seems to me that he has a lot of fans though, and from observation he seems to be quite eccentric/loner or whatever the right term is so maybe that contributes to him being deemed risky. He doesn’t give fan service? I frankly haven’t seen any of his works, so I cannot comment on his acting. I don’t know if he’s also endorsing a lot of products.

Well, Weibo gave each participant some sort of recognition that’s not really taken seriously. It’s a business act. It hasn’t started. Yibo himself said he doesn’t know if and what he will do this year. It’s just that he fans tried really hard to give the appearance that it started because he hasn’t worked in over 6 months.
