Popular Revenge C-drama The Double Needs to Recut After Being Reported for Exceeding the 45-minute Per Episode Airing Requirement

Oh this is so dumb and I hope it doesn’t lead to the remainder of this super entertaining drama getting weird end scenes. The Double has been airing on a fast clip and in just one week exceeded all expectations in terms of viewership and reviews. It’s well made, well acted, and just so darn satisfying to watch the good guys out smart and out scheme the evil scheming baddies. But for web dramas, there is a government requirement now that an episode cannot exceed 45-minutes per episode and The Double has been exceeding that regularly by minutes. It’s been reported to the authorities and the production has been warned so the remaining episodes will now need to be re-cut and likely the already aired episodes will also get re-cut later.

  • Darn it! I'm taking a short break from watching the Double ep 10 right now and this news...is really a bummer. I've been binging ep after ep over the weekend and enjoying the storylines. The series is getting better and better. It's the most entertaining C costume drama in 2023-2024 so far.

It's fair to say the current Chinese regime is pretty anti business. LOL.

    • Everyone has to follow these rules. LYF had to wait to broadcast the second season. TTEOM had to recut.

They all know in advance. They all get called out for it if they break them.

      • @Merry James, To be very honest, I think guidelines are important... So I dont think it is unreasonable to set time limit for dramas. Thius rule actually makes sense....

But I am just annoyed out of selfish reasons as I am concern new edits may affect flow of this drama... 🤣🤣

  • This is so dumb. Well, I guess if they cut on the credits they could still easily cut down 3 minutes per episode. Not that that would help a lot, because at least ep. 4 that I am at is 55 minutes long! And it is already slated to be a 40-episode drama... So the only way out would be to divide in two seasons, if they can get a permit for that.

Kind of dumb on the production too, to be honest. I mean, they knew of the nonsensical rules you have to abide by, what did they expect.

  • No loss, they can cut out fillers like the schoolmates rivalry, that was such a farce with some cringey acting there, I almost want to drop.
The Luyang arc was much better, I like the investigative mode and the romance has turned up a few notch. I don’t mind them cutting the comic fillers, and tighten the plot.

  • Like I get it but couldn’t they have known that their episodes were longer than expected and only chose to crack down on them out of spite. I doubt they didn’t know and did so on purpose I mean they review everything before it can airs so? Yes they are wrong for breaking rules I guess. But the government is always watching no? Seems weird to me. I guess the show might be cut down to size hopefully it doesn’t ruin the story and can complete itself peacefully.

  • Sometimes I wonder what will China do if they end with one these web dramas achieving Squid Game or CLOY level success and boosts the entire Chinese drama industry. Are they going to ban Youku/ Iqiyi/ Tencent from making dramas altogether? What is the logic with all these silly rules and restrictions? Who gains from this and how does it help anyone? Has China still not realized how quickly their dramas are gaining fans across the world? Do they want their drama industry to fail? The self destructive behavior makes no sense.

    • It's unfortunate. I was so happy to finally see this drama air, but I understand the rule. Too many past dramas were overloaded with filler. You could probably make a whole separate series with the way they veered off course with unnecessary sub plots for side characters or other nonsense many viewers aren't even tuning in for. In a lot of cases, just to milk the drama to make more money. It's just sad that good dramas that may need more episodes for a faithful adaptation or well written script are the dramas hurt by this rule. Producers were going overboard though. I've dropped many dramas that got lost in the hills because of filler. I just hope none of Wang Xing Yue scenes get cut.

    • Agree to what you wrote. China like to control everything. Control how many episodes a drama has. Each episode cannot be more than 45 minutes. Find that they are too much.

  • Some ppl are so pissed that this no traffic drama is getting more love than their high budget dramas , I think they should just cut the intro song no need to cut the episode, for second I thought they will lake the drama another revision

  • Ugh. I’ve just become enthralled this past day, binging 10 episodes. Now this sucks donkey balls.
