SBS Fantasy Romance Drama My Demon with Song Kang and Kim Yoo Jung Wraps Entertaining But Ultimately Trifling Run

When I first went into My Demon I noticed it’s weak spots and gaps but found the drama as a whole really engaging and worth watching. But as K-dramas are wont to do, as it went along it never got better and the weak parts started to weigh down the show to the point I FF-d the last few episodes scenes other than the OTP and didn’t feel like I missed much. Kim Yoo Jung did end up acting circles around Song Kang who to his credit tried (lol I could see his effort) and as a stationary love interest for Kim Yoo Jung to act circles around he looked very very good standing there so the visuals were top. The finale was a complete copy of Goblin‘s penultimate ending but with a more satisfying fantasy hoodoo to get the two back together and a more fulsome wrap up for viewers. Ratings remained low through its run from low 3s to mid 4% but it was one of the few recent K-romances I’ve enjoyed for the sum greater than its parts when all is said and done.

  • I may be in the minority here, but as a longtime Yooj fan, I wish she just didn't take this project. She's way too good for this and for Song Kang. And to make it worse, he didn't even bother to accompany her in SBS awards 🙄

Oh well, it already happened so I'll just wish her the best in her next project! Hopefully she gets paired with someone who's actually on her level. Tired of these B-list actors riding on her popularity and then not treating her well (first Ahn Yeo Seop who acted cold to her in Red Sky BTS vids and then Song Kang who left her alone in SBS awards). She deserves better!

    • Your issues are their personal interactions with her (cold in bts, not accompanying someone to an awards function). An actor’s interaction in real life with a costar is frankly none of your concern. Because you haven’t a clue what their real life dynamic is. Both SK and AHS doesn’t owe her to be “warm” or go to the awards. They’re her costars who did the job they were paid for.

Also, it’s funny you call SK and AHS “b-list” actors when they both have had (multiple) bigger ratings hit than Kim Yoo Jung who’s last well received drama was in 2016. Almost a decade ago.

      • exactly, couldn't have said it better myself! tired of these entitled fans who think their fave's co-stars have to worship their fave or something.
        *major eyeroll*

and ahn yeo seop and song kang are "b-list"?

    • He did not ditch her, he had a prior commitment. There was an article in this blog about it and the source articles were like blowing it up out of proportion. It was in the K-ent news SNS the whole day. It was as if he was going to receive Daesang or something.

On the day of the event, no one bothered that he was not there. Haha.

    • i don't think Ahn Hyo seop is cold to her in bts. they are friendly. what cold you are talking about ? if you expecting AHS to treat her like a princess or being extrovert, than that's a different matter.

    • Hopefully she will take on a slice-of-life, a saeguk (non-fusion) or an action drama. Why settle for a genre that no one take seriously, if she wants people to take her seriously?

    • honey, song kang is way more popular than your "yooj" these days lmao. she's actually lucky song kang's management went for this project because most international fans who watched this were watching for HIM. she isn't even that great of an actress, what "her level" are you talking about, hmm?

      • Indeed @dahyun haha I agree with you so much. After this drama, "yooj" has an increase in popularity which is only evident now that she was paired with Song Kang. If there's someone riding on popularity with someone, it is her not Song Kang lol. She's more popular now so watch out for more delusional fans 😆

    • Um, I agree maybe the acting skills are not on par but calling them both "B-list" actors? That's low blow. They're co-stars, nothing else. No obligations to perform outside of work.

      • Yes!
Maybe she could have said that acting skills didn't match, that would have made some sense, but calling them B listers was really low.

    • Not a SK or AHS fan, but that line about them bieng B listers are a bit confusing.....
Each of them have so many hits.
Just because your favs drama didn't work don't go onto blame thier co-workers.

    • she is too good for songkang? aside from having more experience, i saw them just about in the same level. in terms of visuals, i agree both has the same level of gorgeousness in terms of popularity, I'm sorry dear, song kang has always been way more popular than her. his 20 millions ig followers is not for nothing. in terms of acting, their skills are just about the same as well. none are having a great acting skills. one tends to underacting, while the other one tends to overacting. you should be grateful that she acted with songkang & having a great chemistry with him. it really boost her popularity. there is no such things that she's too good for him. they actually deserves each other.

  • Another flop for the overrated 1% ratings queen lol. Now, where are her arrogant fans who claimed this will be a hit? 😂 her overacting self really can't carry a drama, huh? 😏

    • How about start growing up and stop spreading hate? Can't believe comments like this are still accepted on any blog or forum.

    • I didn't know that she had such fans until I saw the first comment in the blog. But man, just because q drama didn't work the fans are bashing thier costars, calling them B listers riding on her coattails!
I don't like Song Kangs acting but he was the reason that I started watching the drama
As a neutral fan I have never went into any drama thinking that It's Yoo-Jungs drama.

      • the irony is, both of that b-listers are way more popular than her fav. that saetbyul is really clowning herself by saying "Tired of these B-list actors riding on her popularity" 🤦‍♀️ I've nothing against her yooj, but her fans really need to attend humble class.

  • This drama was just too boring for me... even fast forwarding it, I could not finish the drama... I hope she will get a better drama next...

  • I tried watching it but he was so bad that I had to drop it. I am way past the point where I will suffer just to see good looking people.

  • I like looking at Song Kang, but he needs to stay far away from romance. I could tell he was awkward and his performance as a goblin was cheesy.

  • I tried to watch this, skipped most scenes in the first few episodes, skipped entire episodes in the middle, and basically just went back for the end. The last episodes made zero sense. The main villain, who was supposed to be human, was basically invincible. So many things happened to him and he just came back every time with like zero injuries. There was just no logic to anything that happened in this drama.

Kim Yoojung was okay. Definitely not her best performance. I wish she’d get/pick better scripts. Song Kang doesn’t have the acting chops to do comedy well. He might’ve had more big hits than her, but that probably has more to do with his looks and luck with scripts than any real acting talent.

  • There were good moments but overall, there wasn't enough story for 16 episodes. The villain wasn't interesting neither. They should have developped deeper his relationship with his mother.

KYJ did well (I loved every of her outfits), I liked her chemistry with SK who did well when he was a puppy in love. But he didn't have the gravitas for an old demon and never looked scary...

At the end, it was a very pretty drama but kinda souless.

  • Song Kang is a Netflix favorite. I do not believe he is b-lister, he is definitely better than a B in terms of star power (acting aside). Netflix won’t keep him if there’s no audience.

  • This project is just badly casted and badly written. Not the fault of one person nor another that hard carried. Kyj was not suitable for this role. Shes too young and unfortunately neither her appearance or acting skills could make the character work. She shined more in her movie roles in 20th Century Girl and Because I Love You simply because they suited her. Song Kang will be Song Kang. Alongside Cha Eun Woo, the pretty boys who need to polish up their tepid acting skills more. He did have good chemistry with Kim So Hyun in Love Alarm that generated alot of positive cp feedback in its first season so not all is lost with him for the romance genre. The lesson learnt here is that pretty people might not produce fireworks when casted alongside each other and sometimes those trampled on getgo might just create the brightest sparks alongside a decent script. Ahs+ksj-Business Proposal. Suzy+Yang Sejong-Doona. These couples were panned like hell before the dramas started by knetizens who stunningly did a 360 degree turn after the dramas aired.

    • Agree with this. KYJ needs to slow down, she is still young and doesn't need to hurry up getting adult roles. She still have a lot of time to explore young roles

    • Yeah kim yoo junh is still young, she doesn’t need to hurry to transform herself to adult role. She should have used this opportunity to explore genre. I have felt that she is in hurry to become adult when she took backstreet rookie that had lots of sexual innuendos

  • I enjoyed this drama. Some dramas are not meant to be thought provoking or give Deasang worthy performances, they are just for entertainment and eye candy. This drama was just that for me. Loved the ost also.
