SBS Fantasy Romance Drama My Demon with Song Kang and Kim Yoo Jung Wraps Entertaining But Ultimately Trifling Run

When I first went into My Demon I noticed it’s weak spots and gaps but found the drama as a whole really engaging and worth watching. But as K-dramas are wont to do, as it went along it never got better and the weak parts started to weigh down the show to the point I FF-d the last few episodes scenes other than the OTP and didn’t feel like I missed much. Kim Yoo Jung did end up acting circles around Song Kang who to his credit tried (lol I could see his effort) and as a stationary love interest for Kim Yoo Jung to act circles around he looked very very good standing there so the visuals were top. The finale was a complete copy of Goblin‘s penultimate ending but with a more satisfying fantasy hoodoo to get the two back together and a more fulsome wrap up for viewers. Ratings remained low through its run from low 3s to mid 4% but it was one of the few recent K-romances I’ve enjoyed for the sum greater than its parts when all is said and done.

SBS Fantasy Romance Drama My Demon with Song Kang and Kim Yoo Jung Wraps Entertaining But Ultimately Trifling Run — 47 Comments

  1. I may be in the minority here, but as a longtime Yooj fan, I wish she just didn’t take this project. She’s way too good for this and for Song Kang. And to make it worse, he didn’t even bother to accompany her in SBS awards 🙄

Oh well, it already happened so I’ll just wish her the best in her next project! Hopefully she gets paired with someone who’s actually on her level. Tired of these B-list actors riding on her popularity and then not treating her well (first Ahn Yeo Seop who acted cold to her in Red Sky BTS vids and then Song Kang who left her alone in SBS awards). She deserves better!

    • Your issues are their personal interactions with her (cold in bts, not accompanying someone to an awards function). An actor’s interaction in real life with a costar is frankly none of your concern. Because you haven’t a clue what their real life dynamic is. Both SK and AHS doesn’t owe her to be “warm” or go to the awards. They’re her costars who did the job they were paid for.

Also, it’s funny you call SK and AHS “b-list” actors when they both have had (multiple) bigger ratings hit than Kim Yoo Jung who’s last well received drama was in 2016. Almost a decade ago.

      • exactly, couldn’t have said it better myself! tired of these entitled fans who think their fave’s co-stars have to worship their fave or something.
        *major eyeroll*

and ahn yeo seop and song kang are “b-list”?

    • He did not ditch her, he had a prior commitment. There was an article in this blog about it and the source articles were like blowing it up out of proportion. It was in the K-ent news SNS the whole day. It was as if he was going to receive Daesang or something.

On the day of the event, no one bothered that he was not there. Haha.

    • i don’t think Ahn Hyo seop is cold to her in bts. they are friendly. what cold you are talking about ? if you expecting AHS to treat her like a princess or being extrovert, than that’s a different matter.

    • Hopefully she will take on a slice-of-life, a saeguk (non-fusion) or an action drama. Why settle for a genre that no one take seriously, if she wants people to take her seriously?

    • honey, song kang is way more popular than your “yooj” these days lmao. she’s actually lucky song kang’s management went for this project because most international fans who watched this were watching for HIM. she isn’t even that great of an actress, what “her level” are you talking about, hmm?

      • Indeed @dahyun haha I agree with you so much. After this drama, “yooj” has an increase in popularity which is only evident now that she was paired with Song Kang. If there’s someone riding on popularity with someone, it is her not Song Kang lol. She’s more popular now so watch out for more delusional fans 😆

    • Um, I agree maybe the acting skills are not on par but calling them both “B-list” actors? That’s low blow. They’re co-stars, nothing else. No obligations to perform outside of work.

      • Yes!
Maybe she could have said that acting skills didn’t match, that would have made some sense, but calling them B listers was really low.

    • Not a SK or AHS fan, but that line about them bieng B listers are a bit confusing…..
Each of them have so many hits.
Just because your favs drama didn’t work don’t go onto blame thier co-workers.

    • she is too good for songkang? aside from having more experience, i saw them just about in the same level. in terms of visuals, i agree both has the same level of gorgeousness in terms of popularity, I’m sorry dear, song kang has always been way more popular than her. his 20 millions ig followers is not for nothing. in terms of acting, their skills are just about the same as well. none are having a great acting skills. one tends to underacting, while the other one tends to overacting. you should be grateful that she acted with songkang & having a great chemistry with him. it really boost her popularity. there is no such things that she’s too good for him. they actually deserves each other.

  2. Another flop for the overrated 1% ratings queen lol. Now, where are her arrogant fans who claimed this will be a hit? 😂 her overacting self really can’t carry a drama, huh? 😏

    • How about start growing up and stop spreading hate? Can’t believe comments like this are still accepted on any blog or forum.

    • I didn’t know that she had such fans until I saw the first comment in the blog. But man, just because q drama didn’t work the fans are bashing thier costars, calling them B listers riding on her coattails!
I don’t like Song Kangs acting but he was the reason that I started watching the drama
As a neutral fan I have never went into any drama thinking that It’s Yoo-Jungs drama.

      • the irony is, both of that b-listers are way more popular than her fav. that saetbyul is really clowning herself by saying “Tired of these B-list actors riding on her popularity” 🤦‍♀️ I’ve nothing against her yooj, but her fans really need to attend humble class.

  3. This drama was just too boring for me… even fast forwarding it, I could not finish the drama… I hope she will get a better drama next…

  4. I tried watching it but he was so bad that I had to drop it. I am way past the point where I will suffer just to see good looking people.

  5. I like looking at Song Kang, but he needs to stay far away from romance. I could tell he was awkward and his performance as a goblin was cheesy.

  6. I tried to watch this, skipped most scenes in the first few episodes, skipped entire episodes in the middle, and basically just went back for the end. The last episodes made zero sense. The main villain, who was supposed to be human, was basically invincible. So many things happened to him and he just came back every time with like zero injuries. There was just no logic to anything that happened in this drama.

Kim Yoojung was okay. Definitely not her best performance. I wish she’d get/pick better scripts. Song Kang doesn’t have the acting chops to do comedy well. He might’ve had more big hits than her, but that probably has more to do with his looks and luck with scripts than any real acting talent.

  7. There were good moments but overall, there wasn’t enough story for 16 episodes. The villain wasn’t interesting neither. They should have developped deeper his relationship with his mother.

KYJ did well (I loved every of her outfits), I liked her chemistry with SK who did well when he was a puppy in love. But he didn’t have the gravitas for an old demon and never looked scary…

At the end, it was a very pretty drama but kinda souless.

  8. Song Kang is a Netflix favorite. I do not believe he is b-lister, he is definitely better than a B in terms of star power (acting aside). Netflix won’t keep him if there’s no audience.

  9. This project is just badly casted and badly written. Not the fault of one person nor another that hard carried. Kyj was not suitable for this role. Shes too young and unfortunately neither her appearance or acting skills could make the character work. She shined more in her movie roles in 20th Century Girl and Because I Love You simply because they suited her. Song Kang will be Song Kang. Alongside Cha Eun Woo, the pretty boys who need to polish up their tepid acting skills more. He did have good chemistry with Kim So Hyun in Love Alarm that generated alot of positive cp feedback in its first season so not all is lost with him for the romance genre. The lesson learnt here is that pretty people might not produce fireworks when casted alongside each other and sometimes those trampled on getgo might just create the brightest sparks alongside a decent script. Ahs+ksj-Business Proposal. Suzy+Yang Sejong-Doona. These couples were panned like hell before the dramas started by knetizens who stunningly did a 360 degree turn after the dramas aired.

    • Agree with this. KYJ needs to slow down, she is still young and doesn’t need to hurry up getting adult roles. She still have a lot of time to explore young roles

    • Yeah kim yoo junh is still young, she doesn’t need to hurry to transform herself to adult role. She should have used this opportunity to explore genre. I have felt that she is in hurry to become adult when she took backstreet rookie that had lots of sexual innuendos

  10. I enjoyed this drama. Some dramas are not meant to be thought provoking or give Deasang worthy performances, they are just for entertainment and eye candy. This drama was just that for me. Loved the ost also.

  11. Even if this drama disappointed me so much, I am grateful that KYJ accepted this because she got big recognition in terms of international following. I always feel like her visuals and talent are underrated. The drama could be done in 6 episodes lol but they put every drama cliches there is not to mention they even copied Goblin.

  12. Well, I’ve been like stuck at ep 11 forever. Since the drama premiered, I have been watching it on and off, constantly distracted to other dramas that I found more interesting. LOL. It’s not that I dislike Song Kang or Kim Yoo Jung. But their acting in MD was passable or underwhelming. Specifically KYJ who had a soft spot on my heart as a child actor and her role in Love in the Moonlight, is underwhelming as a young CEO in MD. The plot of MD isn’t that interesting either with many predictable tropes.

I think KYJ looks consistently very pretty in hanbok and that’s her huge asset. Perhaps she should take more interesting sageuk to find her acting niche in that genre while exploring more complicated roles at the same time. She’s still young. SK’s acting is inconsistent. One moment he had swoony chemistry with KYJ and looked convincing but next moment he appeared not himself as a demon at all. LOL. It’s hard to root for him like this. But heck he does look handsome in MD. LOL.

  13. Ended up as the most disappointing drama for SBS. Please opt for other cast and other storylines. This is the 2024, not 2003.

  14. Strange…mbc is getting better with three hits in a row, but sbs seems to move backwards with these eye-candy actors. A romance/ fantasy romcom cannot survive if it depends on the eye-candy itself, unless of course one comes from a famous boy/girl group.

    • I know right. To be honest, 2023 was not bad with Taxi Driver 2 and Revenant. But it seems SBS is not good at romance drama. One Dollar Lawyer on 2022, Taxi Driver on 2021, 2019 with Fiery Priest and Vagabond. The good ones on SBS is the non-romance ones

  15. This a complete entertaining drama for me. And I’m a black woman saying this! Song Kang was indeed my favorite with his beautiful self. I believe him and his Co-Star were a perfect match. It took me at least three episodes to decide if the show was worth watching it further, and it truly was! I hope there’s a Season 2. Song Kang is gorgeous! And think he did quite well on his comedy parts. So carry on Song Kang don’t listen to the nay sayers!

    • Calm down there, fangirl. We’re not hating on Song Kang or being “naysayers”. I think he was quite good in other dramas like Navillera, Sweet Home, and even in Love Alarm, which is a drama that’s quite hated in Kdrama community. It’s just that My Demon is bad. There are multiple comments about why it’s bad in many MD posts on this blog, take a look at those comments, they’re valid criticisms. But the thing with you fangirls is that every comment that doesn’t praise your favorite to high heavens is “hating” or being “naysayers”. Cringe fangirl behavior and that’s why your favorites don’t improve. Just look at your comment, it’s literally just thirsting on Song Kang and how “gorgeous” he is lol. That says a lot why you’re defending this drama so bad lmao

  16. Not really surprising as this drama seemed to only be promoted on the strength of the leads of visuals and not much else. I wish Kim Yoo Jung would pick a script for a serious modern drama where she could really challenge her acting abilities

  17. I loved this drama my friends and I get together to do Kdrama nights and we all loved it. The actors did such a great job with this drama. Will watch again…

  18. I loved this Kdrama. My friends and I get together and watch Kdramas and we all loved this one. Will most likely watch it again… The actors did a spectacular job. BRAVO!

  19. wish song kang got paired with go youn jung for this, to be honest. but instead we got kyj and now our fandom has to deal with her arrogant fans (like saetbyul above) who will blame song kang for this drama flopping, eurghh

    • LOL haha As if we want Song Kang with our Yooj anyway! Y’all aren’t in the fandom so you don’t know that a lot of us literally groaned when the news broke that our girl will be paired with you Song Kang who’s only good for shirtless scenes! We want Lee Do Hyun or Lee Jae Wook for her! Oh well, both Song Kang and Go Youn Jung are both B-listers who can’t act and are only fads so you’re right, they really would’ve been the perfect pairing! 😍

      • oh wow youn jung and song kang “b-list”? imagine being this delusional! i’m out, man! i’m just talking to a wall at this point. have fun with your delusions!

      • Girl, GYJ has had two big hits in a span of two years, something your fave couldn’t achieve lols the nerve to call her a B lister 💀💀💀

  20. I thought it was a fun drama. I’ve seen KYJ in various things before (mostly as the young version of the FL), but this was my first time watching Song Kang in a drama. I saw too many dramas with idol male leads last year (the ones with only one expression in every scene), so personally I really enjoyed the much more emotive SK in this. I loved the chemistry between the leads, too. Basically, I came in with neutral feelings on the actors and then left with a positive impression.

Plotwise, the drama laid out a lot of dots along the way that didn’t perfectly join up at the end, BUT as it did not end in a shadow play rehashing the whole storyline, nor in the FL coldly rejecting the past life version of her husband…I am reasonably satisfied.

  21. Regarding the acting skills of playing a cold, unfeeling, demonic creature,I think Song Kang nailed it. I feel that trying to make this a partial comedy is what was wrong.his costar, never seemed to be a snobby aristocrat, just a lovely person, easy to love, so not true to her character.it is the producers. Directors writers trying to be too commercial.Song Kang is a really good actor, just not in the right work, is my opinion.

  22. Sick of you people saying yj is still too young for this role, she’s already 25 n her doing diff roles is part of her growth as an actress,u’all cant say she’s forcing herself to do matured roles, she’s just taking her chance to embrace herself(its about stepping out of your comfort zone bish),the audacity to question her acting abilities n popularity?u’all gotta be kidding me,stop being so dumb folks+ y’all keep saying “My Demon” is flop/overrated n yet u people still have the guts n time to leave a comment n say those nonsense things here is a sh*t.If u dont like My Demon then SHUT UP we dont need ur unsolicited opinions.FYI MY DEMON is love by so many (globally) even tho they got low ratings in local/ national tv still they managed to get a high rating in diff platforms ( esp. internationally) coz folks prefers watching it on Netflix/ in any other streaming services,i dont think “overrated” is the right word to use for this drama coz its really good aside from the leads unmatched chemistry the storyline is not too complicated every detail has a deep meaning n its entertaining u’d see diff tropes in this drama,u’all just have diff taste in drama and i get that but putting so much hate on the casts is not acceptable and we cant deny the fact that sk n yj have a great chemistry on n off cam that makes this drama more interesting n exciting + their acting was fire they really ate that part🔥Idk why u’all keep hating this drama cozzzz WHY?LIKE WHY??? Hahahha anyways u’all should stop spreading negativity there’s a lot of important issue that needs to be addressed n resolved so peopleee go back to ur school n go get a book!

  23. It is what it is. Light wholesome romcom for enjoyment. Do not overthink, overjudge or overreact. Kangjoo indeed is a young visual couple! Am now an admirer!
