K-actress Jeon Ji Hyun’s Top Brand Advertisements Pulled in China and Upcoming Shoot Cancelled After C-netizens Outcry Over Her K-drama Tempest Insulting Their Country — 36 Comments

  1. This is really stupid, she is an actress who says whatever is given to her. Boycott the writer, director, producer and TV company who made the drama…

  2. Well, I guess when you’re the second biggest population on the planet, your netizens/brand shoppers have a fair bit of clout. Okay, so we need a list, we really do, or, at least, film/drama makers all around the world need one, outlining what constitutes ‘elements denigrating China’ – what their characters can and can’t say, acceptable plots, etc.. Was the Dalian thing too much I wonder?

Is there any country everyone’s allowed to denigrate or should drama-makers just use made up countries? I know China has strict censorship and regulations which begs the question what code of non-denigrating practice towards other countries is followed by drama-makers in China? I’m going to cast my eye over Chinese dramas in future, I sincerely hope they’re paragons of virtue, when it comes to other country denigrating. NOT that I personally will boycott anyone/anything from China over it, I doubt many people from elsewhere would. Should we?

  3. Like what I’ve said in the previous article, I’ve got a feeling that several groups of people are going around blowing issues up and escalating tensions between China and South Korea ever since Lee Jaemyung got elected as President. There’s also another group who doesn’t want China’s Hallyu ban to end as they want to prevent Korean celebrities from working in China.

  4. The screenwriter also got in trouble in Vietnam for a scene in Little Women where a Korean who fought in the Vietnam War bragged about killing dozens of Vietcong fighters. The drama was pulled by Netflix in Vietnam after the government issued a ban on it. This time it’s a Disney+ drama but since there’s not Disney+ in China they retaliate against the person in the cast who has a significant presence in China because of her advertising deals there.

  5. OK. Well I hope the Hallyu ban never ends, because those C-netz are crazier than the Korean ones in airports, etc. Too many entertainment focused losers (which, honestly, shows a bigger societal problem). There’s having pride in your country, then there’s psychotic patriotism. I should know! Currently living a nationalistic hellllllll right now in the United States of America.

      • I don’t consider he was banned. His remark actually angered a lot of audience. ABC banned him also for business reasons cuz now there is a huge conservative movement in the US. The media wants to make money too. ABC suspended him for only a few days to give him a warning: do you want to make money dude? LOL. Ppl made his suspension hyperbola. In reality, it’s not the same scale as what has been happening inside China on a daily basis. No comparison.

      • Girl, I was just talking in general. And the US has always been crazy nationalistic. It’s just on psycho mode right now! Paranoid? I’d rather that than convince myself we live in a utopia. If fantasy has shown us anything, utopias are just as dystopian as dystopias. 🫣🫠

    • @lu, I don’t know where you live. It’s no surprise that ppl from other countries, specifically the Chinese, would imagine the US in a bad light to mentally torture themselves by turning Uncle Sam’s image into shadow the Godfather LOL. The US and China are in reality at war. As someone living in the States for decades, I haven’t experienced any nationalistic craze either at workplace or at home (my own family is pro Dem LOL) in any moment. That’s the reality to me as anti-West and anti-US paranoid is on-going reality in China. Many Chinese expats associated with China told me that reality themselves. Here in the US, however, I haven’t experienced any prejudice or threat yet just because I look like Chinese in appearance.

Or perhaps you are among the ones joining anti-US activities yourself? Then no wonder you would be so paranoid and insecure about the movement in the US. LOL. BTW, Chinese snowflakes constantly protesting other countries are showing national pride in China while patriotic Americans showing their passion for the country are psychos per your definition! Such double standards! You should move to China for peace instead. LOL.

      • @Somebody I’m responding to both your comments. Uhm, you are a faaaascinating being. Lol. I’m a super minority Southeast Asian who shares an ancient gene somewhere with Southern Chinese. The oppression of my people by the Chinese overlords was far more crippling than that of the Taiwanese currently—so much so—that we became nomads for all of our existence, forced to move from one Southeast Asian mountaintop to another, until many of us made the migration to the U.S. As a first gen Asian American, it took me well into my adulthood to learn America’s REAL history—much of it dark, and much of it hidden—so I hope that one day—even if it’s well into old age—you desire to know truth. I promise you, you’ll become less hateful and more compassionate then for ordinary folk. Maybe one day you’ll see that burning with hatred for the government of China but glorifying the government of the U.S. is the definition of contradiction.

    • As a German, I often see misrepresentations of Germans in foreign shows and movies, but we do not react the way Chinese audiences do. They are particularly sensitive, and as others have said, there is an agenda behind it. The outrage is just a cover to serve self-interest and shut down competition. This is made even more obvious by the fact that they are targeting a massively successful actress instead of the production behind the drama, where the blame should belong.

So I can clearly say this: no, it is not the same as how any other country would react to a line in a drama or to an unfavorable description of a city.

    • LOL. As a matter of fact, the US is currently defamed the most. Even Tempest blatantly suggests the US a warmonger throughout the most recent ep. Nonetheless, I’m still enjoying the show as an American. As far as I know, the US has never banned any shows regardless of the contents putting the country in a negative light. We are not that insecure as a country. LOL.

  6. Ain’t no surprise. Not the first time, Kdramas randomly portrayed other countries in an unpleasant way.

This time, those brands will choose the C celebs as the BA in China.

    • Portraying other countries in an unpleasant way? Not as much as how CCP and Chinese nationals constantly portray other countries online in a bad light on a DAILY basis. LOL

  7. People in China obviously have a fetish to boycott for whatever. LOL. Snowflake syndromes are rampant in this country. It’s a collective illness of mental state. China as a country surely has to go through group counselling and psychiatric therapies after CCP is done. LOL.

  8. Look at the American clown 🤡 above generalising Chinese people as a whole again 😂 But when it comes to her own country, she’ll break it down to conservatives vs democrats or some other sub groups.

    • You need to get over your obsession with Americans. This is about China, idiot, and this behavior (and you) screams insecure. Only second to North Korea in insecurity tbh.

      • You made my day. @Lilith is indeed a very insecure CCP stooge when it comes to the US. LOL. She bitches about the US as if this country has raped her. OMG!

      • @Somebody sorry we’re all too poor in the United States of America to live in delusion like you. It’s unhealthy to call out shortcomings in other countries and then turn a blind eye to those in your own, especially the big, bad U.S. of A. I’m a super minority Southeast Asian, so don’t try to get me started on how I don’t know oppression from opportunity. Dollar bills is how they keep us distracted. Apparently, on you it’s working.

      • @lu, thank you for revealing yourself! I thought you are one ungrateful Chinese privileged hiding in the West. LOL. Although I don’t get what you mean by “super minority SE Asians,” now I know where you’re coming from. You’re obviously an easy target of CCP propaganda that works pretty well on you an ignoramus. Perhaps you should go live in your beloved motherland. Everything has its ancestral home. Fallen leaves should return to the root. You sound very anxious and anguish about the US even everything you has been bitching about is most likely just exists in your mental gym. LOL. I always give a sincere suggestion to you and @Lilth the like: Just move to China rather than whine non-stop about how the majority of the world follow the order set by the US and it has made your lives miserable. Have a great life in China then! LOL.

    • @Lilith Word! I have had enough of people always talking shat about the Chinese too. Then when you mention Americans, they will try to shut you up.

      • @Lilith @BOOOOOOOM and the like, you’re subject to criticism whenever you spell out nonsense! You talked. Then ppl responded. Who shut up whom? This is fair and how free speech works! Have enough? Just go Weibo-ing. You can stick your ass there and don’t ever get on any English forums! LOL. You’re there free to pledge allegiance to CCP, trashing the US and the West, and nobody bothers LOL! Also go live in China and follow the CCP’s propaganda to be consistent with what you advocate for and show your true love LOL. Rather, you live in a free world led by the US while talking shit about the US and free speech all the time. Hypocrisy overload! LOL.

You guys are really too low-dimwitted to know why the Chinese expats have been suffering from discrimination in general nowadays!!!! It’s because of the ignorant ppl like you, blatantly acting like CCP stooges and mouthpieces, slandering the Western culture, the US, and its allies all the time while taking advantage of all the benefits living in the systems and the world order created by the US after WWII, which have given you speech right without fucking CCP censorship. CCP lapdogs like you have been creating hate and divisive chaos in the free world for a long time, and now ppl have recognized the sneaky pattern. The side effect of fighting back against CCP infiltration is hating on general Chinese expats without discernment. Shame on you idiots to further trigger the hatred and worsen the discrimination!

You’re messed up by CCP agenda and are messing up the free world. Go fuck in China! But I bet you’d cry a bucket to your mommy if were facing deportation to China. That’s the truth about yourselves. 口嫌體正直! That’s you! Face it! LOL

      • @BOOM Thank you, glad to meet another intelligent human.

@Somebody Don’t bother applying your double standards on me. Here you are, getting your panties in a twist because you and Americans received criticisms. You blamed the wrong group of people for you and your Chinese spouse’s sufferings. No matter how low you bow down to your White masters, they will still discriminate against you because that’s how they maintain their dominant positions. Note how the US never had an Asian become President? Deportation? I’m sure YOU are the one in high risk of it, seeing as your President even ordered the federal contractors to scrap their DEI programs.

      • @Lilith, lol. Before getting worked up too much in your mental gym about normal ppl, you should first worry about yourself being abandoned by your master CCP like toilet paper (用過即丟) working as a sleeper cell for CCP in the third world. LMAO. There are reasons why Taiwanese Americans are the top 2 household income earners among all the ethnic groups in the US, per Elon Musk. We are well respected in the US thanks to our high education being very skillful professionals that the country need in high demand, unlike illegal Chinese migrants and criminals snuck in the country from both the southern and northern borders, neither are we like some Chinese students doing espionage for CCP.

Keep foaming at your mouth with butt being hurt seeing Americans way better off than you communist puppet in the 3rd world slump !! All you CCP lapdog can do is nothing but barking. LOL

      • The most 2025 statistics even show Taiwanese American households rank among the highest for income in the U.S.

      • @Somebody Keep barking. You are the perfect example of a modern-day slave. You wag your tail at your White master, hoping to be part of the family, but truth is even though he occasionally threw a piece of meat to you, he only sees you as his slave. When others of your kind who live freely outside of your White master’s house angered your White master because they stopped him from taking their things, he came back home and took his anger out on you. Then instead of being angry at your White master for hitting you, you blame those people for not giving your master what he wants.

      • @Lilith, keep yourself go banana! You’re so easy to be triggered once called out for your true self: CCP sleeper cell + mental gym VIP. And the lethal weapon to make you schizophrenic: moving to China. LMAO.

Like many CCP lackeys and so-called pinkies, once called out to be deported from the free world to China, CCP lapdogs like Lilith go berserks and panicked. LOL. You have little worth while you work only as sleeper cells in the free world, trash talking on English forum 24/7. But you know pretty well when you are deported to China, CCP will trash you like toiler paper. LOL. So now, you’re trembling!

    • @Somebody sorry we’re all too poor in the United States of America to live in delusion like you. It’s unhealthy to call out shortcomings in other countries and then turn a blind eye to those in your own, especially the big, bad U.S. of A. I’m a minority Southeast Asian, so don’t try to get me started on how I don’t know oppression from opportunity. Dollar bills is how they keep us distracted. Apparently, on you it’s working.
