“Fauxcest is the Best!” — 18 Comments

  1. I maintain that with Damo, what they were feeling for each other wasn’t romantic love, but a strange connection that sprang from the fact they were brother and sister. They just confused it for romantic love because it was so strong and they couldn’t understand it. The REAL romantic love was with Naeuri.

I have a feeling the reason I never finished Ireland is cuz of that whole are-they-or-aren’t-they storyline. = I felt so bad for Hyun Bin!

Awesome post, by the way. 😉 I trust you’ll be writing more in future?

  2. So funny! Love your inimitable irreverent laugh-a-minute romp-through-the-usual-suspects. Like your wuxia “boa chou metre” which still sets me off giggling when I think about it.

When you get round to watching “Resurrection” you can throw that one onto the fauxcest heap.

  3. @ Dahee – sure thing, I’ll write more inane, pointless, meandering posts about whatever categories of K-drama mindbending logic comes to mind next. ;-P In all seriously, thanks for the vote of confidence. It means a heck of a lot to me. I’ll save any substantive posts for Thundie, this is where I come to play.

As for the Chae Ohk-Rebel Leader relationship, sigh, it really is the million dollar question. What type of “love” did she feel. I believe that she always saw him as a man and loved him as a man, and that tormented her so. If she had loved him because of their blood relationship, that would add a dash of pseudo-meta perceptions to it. Somehow implying they subconsciously were attracted to each other because of their relationship. I can’t discount that possibility, but I’m not onboard with that view (yet). Maybe another watch will bring me that perception.

@ langdon-unni – *ignoring you* Still love you, but *ignoring you*

@ serendipity – my “Bao Chou” meter! Totally forgot about that, and what I must’ve been drinking that day to come up with that!

Resurrection had fauxcest? No way! Based on how much folks rave about the drama, I can’t imagine it would use such an lame plot device. But consider it added to the list.

Folks – Resurrection also has fauxcest.

I also cannot believe I forgot another fauxcest drama, especially since it starred a certain someone who is lighting up your PP post.

Folks, second addition – Iljimae also has fauxcest – guy2 gets taken in by rich family who believe he is the father’s bastard child. Guy2 is in fact NOT the bastard child, his poor folks lied to get him adopted into a family that could provide for him. However, guy2 does not know this, he thinks he is the family’s poor bastard child, and he develops feelings for the daughter of the family. Guy2, btw, is played by Park Shi-hoo, one hot, hot piece of wood in that drama!

I would insert Iljimae in the icky meter between Autumn in my Heart and Damo – it’s icky because guy2 spends his entire adult life in love with girl, all the while believing she is his sister and his love for her is taboo – only we (the audience) know it ain’t so, they aren’t related.

  4. lol I had a great laugh skimming this funfunfun at work, and I’m roflamo now! MWAHAHAHA

Team NAEURRII FTW!! Whenever they share a space, air thickens, I cease to breath and they pulsates in their ‘forbidden’ love for each other. I want to get them a candlelit room, hot kimchijjigae, makgulli, blankets, pillows and I’ll keep them in a snowglobe w/ falling cherry blossoms just outside their window forever!!

and, this is the only drama I find Lee Seo Jin irresistible.. the looks he threw ChaeOk’s way whenever she’s in view were purely a man possessed by a most tender, heartrending love. EVERY SINGLE SECOND! Naeuri!!!!

  5. Just learned a new word today- fauxcest,eh? So, now I have the answer that I yearned for while watching OFD. Before your clarification, I just thought the writer was just giving me “cr*p” (baaaad plot)- which I couldn’t stop myself from watching because of my Yoo 😉
    Once again @ockoala, good job…

  6. Snowman…that’s the series that made me don’t like Gong Hyo Jin. I know she is just being the character but I really hated it when she cried. Another thing, she ran away with her bro’ in law and rejected Kim Rae Woon.

  7. Haha, love this post!

I’m trying to think of more examples of fauxcest/formalcest, but I think you’ve pretty much covered them all. Right now my biggest dread is that Giant might decide to pull this one on us, what with all the siblings scattered as kiddos and a big time leap looming ahead. I’ll go bald pulling my hair out if that happens.

    Keep writing, my love! 😆

  8. First, I’m with Dahee on Team Naeuri in my own analysis of that situation.

I’ll still stick I Really Really Like You in here. It has every kdrama device in the world including a brief bout with fauxcest.

Does Resurrection count? My memory of that is always confused, but it seems to me that it has a bit of adopted boy in love with sister going on.

  9. My next door neighbor fell in love with her older sister’s bf when she was 10 and she was 12 when her sister and bf became engaged. Relationship between older sister and fiancee didn’t work out so they broke up. 12 years later younger sister runs into him on the streets of NYC and instant attraction. They are now married and have a young son though the husband appears to be 15+ years older.

Yes Resurrection does have that but its not a real adoption. I won’t say more but its not icky I promise.

Out of the dramas you listed and which I’ve watched Autumn Tales and Ireland had the biggest ick factor. Autumn Tales because they literally grew up thinking they were brothers and sisters, Ireland because she was committing adultery on Ireland Hyun Bin for that guy. Who would be crazy to do that?

Dahee, that is what I always felt as well about Damo not being real incest but rather a deep connection.

  10. Hi, ockoala! I finally made it here now that I’m home and slept adequately . First I thought I bookmarked it for when I’d have time to read and couldn’t find it and then, I was going ask for the link on twitter today. Somehow, it magically appear and for the first time I sat down & read it. Now I know where the word fauxcest originated, lol.

This made me realize I’m behind on K drama watching scene, the only ones I’ve watched are WS and MG… Have so much to catch up, don’t know when… For now I’m happily busy. So I must rely on your(& others) reviews and analysis on of all the dramas haven’t come my way.

    Thank you!

  11. ok, this isn’t a drama. but i just saw it recently.. and it goes all the way.. but they didn’t know!! but it still disturbed me to no end. STILL DISTURBS ME!

    Oldboy. ’nuff said.

  12. Damo fauxcest was AWESOME-R than any other fauxcest I’ve ever seen in K-drama. (Just coming off a marathon of the drama a while ago that’s why..hehehe..)

Am I the only Rebel Jang supporter here? Kim Min Joon obviously showed quite a bit of his acting limitations whilst portraying the character, but I didn’t care… I liked the premise of his relationship with Chae Ok more than the bond shared by Naeuri and herself. But there’s no doubt of Naeuri’s indispensable love for Chae Ok… broke my heart into pieces altho I support the “fauxcest” couple. T_T

  13. Haha! Hilarious! Love your writing, ockoala!

I agree with nycgrl re: Resurrection. Informalcest there but not icky at all so please don’t let that stop you from watching it.

  14. What a fun post to read! Glad I found your playground, ockoala!

I was wondering where all the prodigious and prolific posters from dramabeans.com had gone. Now I’ve found
A Koala’s Playground and Thundie’s Prattle and I’m looking forward to exploring these treasure troves of kdrama goodness! Thanks, everyone.

  15. Hey Koala,I was reading and wondering if you ever watched a drama where Guy falls in love with Girl1 but she later left him,and Guy refalls in love with Girl2 thinking she’s really Girl1?Thanks,I been trying to find it but can’t!

  16. BUT ALL IN ALL, INCEST OR NOT, autumn in my heart was so well played by song seungheon that i would fall in love with my brother if he looked like THAT.
