Park Hyung Sik in Talks for Thriller K-drama Treasure Island About an Amnesic Thief

I like Park Hyung Sik but he has so many mid K-dramas and only the occasional hit that I’m left wondering if it’s his inability to pick scripts or its himself. I totally dropped his last drama Dr. Slump with Park Shin Hye even though I liked it well enough at the beginning it just didn’t hook me and that interest quickly dwindled to actually forgetting the drama was airing on weekends. Same for his prior sageuk Our Blooming Youth. But perhaps a change of genres is needed and his next drama already in talks for will be a thriller caper of sorts, titled Treasure Island its about a man who steals a 2 trillion won political slush fund and then disappears, only to reappear with no memory. If he accepts the drama will go into production later this year.

Park Hyung Sik in Talks for Thriller K-drama Treasure Island About an Amnesic Thief — 25 Comments

  1. He is handsome for sure but maybe not good in chemistry with co-stars? I struggled too with Dr Slump and it was with Park Shin Hye already. I just didnt feel the chemistry. There’s no spark. With our Blooming Youth I didn’t feel for the FL. The story was the Golden Hairpin which is supposed to be a good novel from China.

      • I second this! He had great chemistry with them. My first couple that I wish would go reel to real was Park Boyoung and him 🙂

      • Yes the chemistry in Happiness, even though the focus was not on the romance, was still pretty good.

      • Amen to that although I think she had a bit of it with PHS but none with Hyun Bin in Memories of the Alhambra.

      • I thought Psh had great chemistry with LJS in Pinocchio and yeah in You’re beautiful.

      • Why do you always blame the actress? Could be that he is the problem lol. Tbh, he does not have the charm to become a male lead. He should stop doing those cringe aegyo, it’s getting old and annoying. Peace.

    • I thought he was ok with PSH. Nothing groundbreaking, but as far as chemistry with PSH goes, that’s prob as good as it gets. She’s never looked in love with a single male lead in her career I don’t think. Maybe in He’s Beautiful? But I might be remembering that with rose tinted lens.

  2. I like him very much and he is really among the best idol-actors out there.

Personally, I also skipped his last few dramas despite how much I like him. To me, it is his inability to pick good scripts. He just happened to choose lousy dramas more often than not that failed to make use of his talent.

I hope he gets to shine in this upcoming project because I miss watching him so badly. The last drama of his that I watched is Happiness (which I didn’t enjoy due to my strong aversion of anything zombie).

  3. Other commenters mentioned somewhere else they have soft spots in their hearts for certain flower boys. PHS is the one flower boy that has earned a soft spot in my heart. He’s charismatic on screen. But agreed with other comments, his last few dramas have been underwhelming, including the most recent one, Dr. Slump. DS all started promising. Park Shin Hye as the FL of DS has changed my past impression about her inability to act. Both PHS and PSH did decent jobs leading the drama. But the script and the directing are the issues. The plot repeated same narratives about mental struggles back and forth without making a marked impact on viewers. I found directing a bit lazy and any dramas focusing too much on daily family mundane with just a bit borderline thriller usually diluted the intensity of stories. DS became pretty draggy towards the end. I’ve actually been struggling to finish the last few eps. In the meanwhile I switched to binge old dramas and got to finish some such as Alchemy of Souls (I & II) and Imitation. And I even started to watch The Impossible Heir. I got hooked with TIH and just watched DS as a filler while waiting for TIH to update. LOL. That’s how boring DS is getting. I decided to finish DS though simply cos I love to watch Hyung Sik. I’m shallow sometimes and a visual freak. LOL.

I hope this new thriller for Hyung Sik really works for him. I don’t think he’s unable to deliver. At least nobody can mimic his charm that only belongs to PHS alone. And his last thriller, Happiness, got mixed reviews. Many international fans do like Happiness very much and highly recommend it. I have yet to watch it. Thrillers aren’t for everyone. I personally love thriller way more than family drama like Dr. Slump.

    • I really disliked Dr. Slump too. I’m the type to slug through a drama if I see more than half of it, but the childishness of the lead characters when they got together almost made me give up. No 30 year olds act the way they did. It’s not cute, it’s plain stupid. But like you, I watched it all the way to the bitter end. It’s surprising how many said the drama was good. It’s atrocious😬

As for PHS, I do hope he can pick more interesting and diverse roles. He tends to remind me of LJS for the most part – different name, same roles, same characters. Blooming Youth at least was somewhat of a change but that was an absolute snooze fest.

    • I would suggest giving happiness a try. The acting was really good. The suspense was really good and the chemistry was really good. However, I do think that the ending should’ve been much better.

  4. I think he is best at tortured second lead roles, lol. I totally fell for him in High Society with Uee, and he was the best flower boy in Hwarang.

  5. I’m a fan of PHS and have watched most of his recent dramas. This man acts through his eyes which I find mesmerising. I feel he does historical and romcom very well, but perhaps its time to spread his wings a bit and try some other genres.

I liked him in OBY but I didn’t like the FL and felt there was a lack of chemistry there. He was such an adorable puppy in Dr Slump but once again, I didn’t love the FL and felt her inability to pull herself together dragged the story down and the chemistry wasn’t quite there either. I felt more chemistry with Soundtrack #1 but it was so short it was hard to build a lot of rapport with the characters.
The stand out chemistry is of course with Park Bo Young in Strong Woman.

  6. I have a soft spot for him since “What happens to my family ?”an i still do , he didn’t have no chemistry with Park Shin Hye , Han So Hee and also with his co star in Our blooming youth , but the dramas weren’t well scripted and directed too . But i find that he has incredible chemistry with Park Bo Young and a very good one with Nam Ji Hyun and Han Hyo Joo . I liked his interpretation in the remake of “Suits” too . Sometimes a drama can be saved by the chemistry between actors , but it takes two . There are a lot of dramas but only a few ones with good scripts .

    • I’m not a fan of his interpretation on Suits, but agree with everything else. And he was truly the best in High Society. I felt his story with lim ji yeon was more memorable than the first lead couple. Soundtrack #1 was good for me because I really like the topic on friend becoming lover, but it’s true that his chemistry with han so hee was not a sizzling kind, it was kinda bland

    • The FL in Our Blooming Youth is the problem. Her acting appeared emotionally detached from the storyline. She’s the downer of that drama. So far, Strong Woman is still my favorite drama of Hyung Sik. I need to watch Happiness yet. Although I like thrillers in general, I’m not so much for Zombies. That’s why I resist a bit watching Happiness.

  7. He’s better in serious roles than comedic/cute ones. I really liked him in Happiness and OBY (even if this one wasn’t well written).

  8. He was very good in Juror 8 which is a very good movie. When it comes to dramas, he had good chemistry with PBY, HHJ and also Go Ara (Hwarang). Its sad they could not cast a more competent actress for OBY because the source material was really compelling but it hinges more on the FL to pull off the main story rather than ML. All that said I think hes starting to overact as well. Did not like his performance at all in DS and dropped drama around ep 6. I actually preferred PSH acting in it more than his. Hope he goes back to nuanced acting and how his eyes used to convey so much emotions that it carried the acting for him

  9. Why do you always blame rhe actress?could be that park hyunv shik is the problem lol. He should stop doing those cringe aegyo, he’s annoying. Tbh, he does not have the charm to be a male lead lol

  10. This dude always choose mediocre scripts or that he wasn’t offered good ones which is a pity bec he is promising and has talent. He needs one hit project again like swdbs to be in demand again.
In fairness to Dr Slump, it got decent results. The blame here aren’t the actors bec they gave their best in this project. It’s more on the writing and the director making HS repeat stuffs he did in swdbs which is not suitable in the character.
