Exorcism Horror Thriller Movie Dark Nuns with Song Hye Kyo and Jeon Yeo Bin Top the South Korean Box Office on Premiere Weekend
So maybe January rather than August, which is ghost month in many Asian cultures, is the new landing ground for South Korean horror movies. Last year Exhuma burst out of the gate to start off the year with a bang and now Dark Nuns is giving the box office a jolt to end January of this year. Starring Song Hye Kyo and Jeon Yeo Bin as the titular nuns trying to save a boy’s life with an exorcism, the movie topped the last weekend of January’s box office with a great half a million admissions and a 42% share of all tickets sold. As much as moviegoing remains down overall, when the right movie hits at the right time to pique audiences interest there remains a strong appetite to go to the theaters.

Trailer for Dark Nuns:
It’s actually struggling to hit 1 million viewers and probably need a week to hit that numbers when harbin only need 2 days to hit 1M and now lost to HITMAN 2 on box office. Too much media play for this movie IMO.
Song Hye Kyo always does too much media play. Her PR seems very powerful.
One can spot media play a mile away with this. Dark Nuns is facing an uphill battle to break even on an already small budget, and it’s reviews are bad.
Topping the box office doesn’t mean anything anymore when the Korean box office is in the gutter. Films are having a hard time not being in the red. Harbin is still a million plus tickets away from earning zero profit, even though it feels like the cast is out doing promos every day and it was atop the box office for a month.
Pretty impressive. Why are there negas here. 1 million is 1 million. For as long as the sales exceeded the capital, then it’s a successful film. Harbin is struggling to break even.
Like others said, the movie is being heavily media played. There are articles comparing it to Bogata’s performance and it screams manipulation. Doubt this can reach breakeven.
What I saw on social media from the fans of the 2 stars, breakeven for this movie is only 1.6 million ticket sales, so they will probably reach it. It seems like a pretty low BEP and even if they hit it, it’s nowhere near the amount of ticket sales that Exuma or even Harbin brought in.
I wish I could read an objective review of this film. All I see are the actresses’ stans praising it to the high heavens and their antis bashing it to hell. An objective review would be great.
These types of drama just don’t do really well or get much buzz from the audiences. So far, there has been none that I’ve seen from drama/movies watcher beside her fans acct, which says more about the movie itself than her (she did her part). ParkSeoJoon’s Devin Fury also had similar reception but failed to break even.
I have a feeling it make be hard to make a profit.
