Xianxia C-drama Love of the Divine Tree with Deng Wei and Xiang Han Zhi Ends Decent Run and Solid 7.0 Ratings on Douban — 12 Comments

  1. Love of the Divine Tree has been the only Xianxia that I was able to pass beyond 20 eps since The Longest Promise. I finished TLP all because of Xiao Zhan and I also wanted to see how the novel I read was adapted. I was able to follow LotDT because the plot was solid with enough suspension to keep me hooked. I stopped at ep 21 for the time being thanks to more interesting Kdramas to watch at the same time. I may pick up LotDT again. It’s a decent costume drama IMO.

Both leads had solid acting in LotDT and they could emote well. I still can’t get the visuals of Deng Wei as his fans has been praising him to the moon nonstop LOL. His lips and jawline are a bit distracting. Nonetheless, his acting eventually outweighed the looks in this drama. I didn’t expect Xiang Han Zi to have such a good emotional range. Her expressions and acting were quite natural that I like. Summing up, this is one better costume drama that I’ve watched recently.

  2. Overall, pretty good drama.

    *Spoilers*

Loved the happy ending with children. However, two issues with this drama, the OST wasn’t that great or maybe the music director didn’t know when to use what song to create the perfect mood, so the very important scenes came out flat. Every pivotal point was very unclimatic from when she died, to when she regained her memories, to when he lost his memories and gained them back, to when he sacrificed for her and etc. Besides that, the story made sense and the actors could emote.

    • Haters gonna hate…your hatred for Deng Wei is clearly clouding your judgement. FYI even non-fans/casual viewers liked it and called it one of the better xianxia in recent years. 8.6 on MDL and an opening score of 7.0 on Douban (where most dramas are dragged by haters) is quite a feat if you ask me… That’s not a smash hit but it did well and that’s all that matters in the end.

      • What judgement is needed to read the director’s excuses??? Is he a hater too?

Like fans such as yourself have any unbiased judgement. LOL! If you think this drama did well enough to get him that quality script that he’s allegedly been waiting a jobless year for, you’re the one whose judgement is clouded, if not completely lacking.

      • I like Deng Wei but I agree with Kokuto about this one. Director himself literally talked about it in live streams and some fans subbed it on twitter…
Does that mean he is also a hater on his own work?! lol

  3. Deng Wei really astounds me. He says he wants to choose quality over quantity; so in a whole year he hasn’t found a drama of quality worth taking? I would understand if Deng Wei had an impressive resume where he could take such liberties as to be so choosy but before Lost You Forever he was only known for his support roles that weren’t anything to brag about. I don’t know if he’s surrounded by a bunch of “yes” men or this man really believes he’s bigger than what he is.

  4. He wants to follow won bin foot steps, he knows his acting is mediocre so he wants to spare us general public from unnecessary suffering.its good we should encourage him.

  5. Didn’t plan to check this out but started out of boredom, I was charmed by the FL. Looked her up and realised I watched her years ago in modern Cdrama Love In Time. Hope to see her in more dramas.

  6. I’d still say congrats to both leads and the production! A 7.0 is definitely quite strong for xianxia. Just so many that end up face-planting. I was expecting something in the 6s at best. When you think about what has aired in the past year, I think for Deng Wei, doing this drama was better than some of options he could have been offered, given that he’s still new-ish and up-and-coming.
