Doctor X: Mafia in White Hits 19.5% Ratings But Episode 6 Plotline About Gwangju Uprising Leads to K-netizens Calling for Drama to be Pulled From Broadcast
The drama gods giveth and the drama gods may get it taketh away. This weekend’s airing of SBS medical drama Doctor X: Mafia in White continued the rising ratings trend for the series with episode 6 hitting a new high of 19.5%. But that same high viewership also means more people watched it and saw that the episode contained a plotline about a patient living with a bullet fragment lodged in his brain for over 30 years caused by him getting shot by the police during the May 1980 Gwangju Uprising. His character went there to save his protesting brother and got hit by a stray. Some netizens are furious, calling for Doctor X to be cancelled for using this dark chapter of SK history as a plotline and also the contested allegation that innocent bystanders were injured in the police crackdown on the protestors. I don’t think Doctor X will be cancelled maybe at most this episode will be pulled in future streaming but probably not, it’s just those hardliners that want to hold firm to the position that the government crackdown was reasonable and had no collateral damage.
