Mary Stayed Out All Night Episode 6 Recap — 63 Comments

  1. OK after this drama KJW really needs a drama of his own where he wins the girl! Just once he needs a drama were he gets to announce to evcry one that some girl is his woman. Please someone get him his own drama!!!

  2. wheeew!!!!!…. my heart is beating doubly fast…love this, now I can’t wait for the rest of the episodes. Thanks much for the recap.

  3. Oh no! I am hopelessly addicted, so far no episode has disappointed me and I have to admit being so satisfied with that three way grab at the end, even though it is such a cliche. What girl isn’t in love with the fantasy of two hot guys going after her, and if I am not mistaken it looks like Jung In will get a kiss in the next episode (fanning herself) Mae Rie is a lucky girl! Anyway I can hardly wait to watch episode 8.

  4. Bahhhhh!!!! I was squealing at the end of this episode, and throughout the episode as well! I was so waiting for this recap since I saw the episode without subtitles, and I was at a loss, so THANK YOU! I can’t wait for tomorrow’s episode since I am a Jung-In fan, but I have dreams of Mu-Gyul … there’s something wrong there right? I think its because I want My Gyul and I want Mae-Ri to have Jung-In, AH! I don’t know! I like Jung-In with Mae Ri, child love story .. can’t beat that! I am so glad that Mu Gyul is expressing something now … awesome! Bah, now I am all hyped for tomorrow, and I won’t be able to go to sleep. Thanks for the recap!! Can’t wait for tomorrow’s recap! :D!!!

  5. I am somewhat happy that JungIn does get a kiss. Mugyul is dreamy but somehow, i’m hoping for some serious romance of Mary & JungIn.

  6. This episode totally took everything up a notch, at least for me. I loved the first four episodes where everything was cute, but I’m all about the emotional involvement of the people in the love polygons, and not just the love polygons themselves. To continue the geometry analogy, when this triangle was first constructed, all three sides were of roughly equal length, at least emotionally; no one was terribly invested in any relationship, in any direction. They were all pretty much strangers and they acted that way. But now Mu-gyul is definitely upping the ante — not only is he more invested in his relationship with Mae-ri, but his relationship with Jung-in is correspondingly becoming more and more significant, both professionally and personally. Even though Mae-ri is at the center of the conflict, and in some ways the catalyst for the action, Mu-kyul is the one making the decisions to take things to the next level, and I like it.

Mu-gyul can’t help but be affected by Mae-ri’s ingenuousness and genuine concern for him, and by the value she places on loyalty. She’s the total antithesis of his mother — loyal, down-to-earth, consistent, nurturing, considerate, and caring. She’s not a fangirl, she understands him, and she understands the value he places on his music. She does keep asking him to do more and more as the relationship situation escalates, but she’s not making capricious demands on him and jerking him around, and she’s determined to repay him in some way. In short, given his background, I think it would be almost impossible for MG not to fall for MR. MG literally has dozens and dozens of girls falling all over him, anxious to lavish him with all sorts of “love”. He gives out physical affection like perfume ladies at a department store with free samples. It might sound a little squicky, but what MG needs from a significant other is a little bit of mothering, because he never had it growing up.

I enjoy this little bit of reversal of the typical situation. As has been previously noted, the pairing we would expect is Jung-in and Mae-ri; JI is the (slightly cold, but soon to be melted by our heroine) knight in shining armor, swooping in to save poor-but-honest-and-hard-working-not-to-mention-spunky Mae-ri from a hopeless situation not of her own making. In those dramas (and I’m not knocking them, ’cause I love ’em, too), all of the help goes one direction, from the guy to the girl. He’s always saving her from whatever she needs saving from (and it’s surprising how many formerly spunky Cinderellas totally loose their spines and become totally dependent by about episode 10 when it’s no longer needed for plot development). In this drama, MG is helping out MR, but only reluctantly (at first), and only out of a mild form of amusement; as things become more serious, Mae-ri is the one who is giving. She pays MG’s landlady, makes him food, helps him out of the slave contract, humors his mother, and cleans his house. It’s really refreshing to see the girl have some useful role outside “plot catalyst” and “excuse for male posturing.” Not that she doesn’t play that role, too.

That’s another thing that I love about this drama — Mae-ri is not afraid to speak her mind. She’s not afraid to take Jung-in’s dad to task for infringing on the contract that he insisted on in the first place. She’s not afraid to tell him that he’s giving her too much, and it makes her uncomfortable. She tells MG the truth about going to Jung-in to help him out of his contract. She tells her dad that he’s ridiculous for trying to buy off MG.

The characterizations, or more specifically the characterizations as realized by JGS, MGY, and KJW, are definitely this drama’s strongest point. As you say, ockoala, it’s a pity that this material wasn’t adapted by a stronger writer, because the plot is a little loose and jerky; but with JGS, MGY, and KJW on board, I’d watch them grow sweet potatoes on an acre of land.

      • I loved your analysis into that. I agree 100% on your viewpoints.

And yes, I also could watch a drama consisting entirely of them being farmers if those three starred in it. ^^

But please, please, please give KJW a lead role after this! I’ve been dying for that since Coffee Prince.

    • “As you say, ockoala, it’s a pity that this material wasn’t adapted by a stronger writer, because the plot is a little loose and jerky; but with JGS, MGY, and KJW on board, I’d watch them grow sweet potatoes on an acre of land.”

Hahah I agreeth! Great comment, Estel!

  7. i’m so glad there’s only a day left until ep 7 😀

i love all the main leads
my hatest character is Jung In’s dad… jerk thinking he can get all he wants and manipulating his son just cuz he worships his dad T___T” I say… GRRR

  8. GAWD, so true. the ending of this ep left me squeeling so much more than the kiss ending. it felt so true and so ‘squeel worthy!’ And indeed, am so loving Mu Gyul and how he clasps Maeri’s hand at the end and of course his declaration for the rest of the world.

  9. Aaargh! Gosh I want to play Mary…Why does it have to be only 16 episodes? I’m just craving for it more and more with each episode. Writer please I’m enjoying the close fight between the two male leads. And Mary don’t fall in love just yet or it’ll start to be a bore. Let the love of MG and JI explode much further it’s quite entertaining. LOL (talk about insensitivity.) JGS I love how you play the jealous act and the way you summon Mary for a talk.
Thank You Ockoala, as always for the recaps and previews and everything, .

  10. As I said, your recap completes my morning. Thank youuuu m(_ _)m

I’m glad we got ep 6 on Monday. I think I would go quiet (ok, maybe not so quiet) crazy waiting 6 days for ep 7 otherwise. 23 hours is bad enough 😛

I, too, wish for a better writer *sigh* what a waste that these fabulous actors were doing their craft so well, immersing themselves in their own roles, but not that many people (in Korea) watched their performances. *but then even now I’ve been known to get a little crazy during the weekends waiting for Monday and Tuesday to arrive. What would I become if we were given a better writer? lol… oh, the possibility… *

“But to him, this may mean nothing (a passing fancy) or something much more (which is where I see Mu Gyul pushing her away due to his fear of commitment).”

I think that’s what going to happen too. He has abandonment issue resulting in fear of commitment, thanks to Mom, and his first reaction when he realized his feeling would be to cut her off. Which we saw in ep 7 preview. Which would be aired tonight. *squeals*

  11. OMG thank you thank thank you!!!
i just finish 6 epi and i love it so so much
i was actualy clapping hands and feet at the end
Mu Gyul you’re the best, i can’t help but love you my sukkie cat!!!
can’t wait for tomorrow, and the subs…..

    love love love…..

  12. Once again, thank you. Your recap always made my day complete. Mu Gyul is just so adorable! He’s a complete total package, he has it all – looks, talents, charm, personality and aura. Just can’t help but to fall for him LOL. I wonder when Mary is going to fall for him? Or had she already fallen for him? They are just so CUTE together!!! Thank you OCKOALA! You’re the BEST!

  13. thank you so much for the recap..true that this story develop unexpected, each episode is so triggering, you can’t miss one episode or else you will miss a bunch..I love jealous MG but wondering what will Jun in do next to woo mary? and at the preview of episode 7,if I’m not mistaken MG asked MR to end their fake marriage, oh I hope MR can talked MG out and forgot he even asked that..I don’t want their love story to end there…MG should be more open, after he’s being brave to announce that he’s marriage to MR but then because he can’t bare to be jealous and think that JI already catch MR’s heart after he witness JI kiss MR..oh can’t wait for episode 7

  14. again thank you ockoala for the recap!!! i’m still gahhh over Mu Gyul’s jealousness kkk!
can’t wait for the Jung In and Mae ri’s turn for D Kiss!!! and from the looks of it, it’s gonna be HAWT!!!!
i think this is the only love triangle that i can’t choose who gets the girl seriously!
    love them three to death!!

  15. kyaaaaahhhhh!!! i just so love this!!! now this got me excited!!!

they are really taking this to the next level now..and i really love the sense of competition between the two guys!!! ( omo!! who to choose??!!! i actually like Mae Ri with both guys… she compliments both of them but in different ways..) i like it when their eyes speak volumes and they just glare at each other. i had to replay the last part over and over again.. even without the subs, i just had to replay it.. hahaha!! lucky Mae Ri. 🙂

but i have to say that Mu Gyul is really pulling fast ones on Jung In.. Jung In needs to step up his game to win Mae Ri.. ( preview of next episode ..him kissing Mae Ri.. gyaaahhh!!! 🙂 ) now that would make it all the more interesting.

looking forward to the next one!! 🙂

    • hey kittykat! Poor Jung In he kisses her and gets punched…what kind of a script is this anyway???? In MY script, Jung In kisses her passionately in the rain, and she kisses him right back…MG sees them and moves in to punch JI,and Mae Ri floors him with a flying kick….then she piggybacks injured Jung In back to her room and lovingly feeds him hot kimchi soup….

      • Awww.. I do feel bad about Jung In being punched though.. That’s the problem I’m sorta having.. I actually like both guys… Hehehe… Hmmnnn.. Maybe Mae Ri can just give up on both and then I can console them in my own special way.. Hahahaha!!

      • aigooo!!!! you’re being greedy chingu kittykat…. console THEM by yourself. LOL why not console mu gyul and me and chingu mayssenger will take turn in comforting jung in?! isn’t that a good deal? LOLOLOL

    • bwahahaha!! sorry for being greedy!! hahahaha!!

so you, me, and maysengger will console them both!! does that sound better now? 😉

  16. WAHAHHAHAHAH!!!!! … I was jumping of joy and screaming on top of my voice while watching this episode. omo!!!! tis my favorite episode so far and worth waiting for. episode 5 is the declaration of war and this episode is the onset of the battle royale. the “tug-of-war” scene just killed me. GAWD!!!! how i love that scene and how i wish i’m maeri. LOL

much as i would like to believe that mary would fall for MG (who wouldn’t be, anyway?!) coz he’s the leading man and it’s their love story (i totally agree with you, ockoala) , i’m not losing hope that somehow… he’d fall for dashing jung-in. ^^keke otherwise, i want an ending with her choosing neither of them. i guess that would be fair enough. 😀

    thanx again ockoala!

    • hey chingu allenif! Yeah, I can predict the end…. Mae Ri and MG hook up while poor JI smiles and coolly walks away…..or she decides to have BOTH MG and JI, and splits her time between the two guys. I wish for once, just for once, they would spring a surprise ending for us. But that won’t happen ….it’s Jihoo all over againnnnnnn …..it’s amazing that I’m still on the JI ship cos normally by this time, I would have normally jumped ship already…guess that speaks volumes for the charisma of Kim Jae Wook…love that guy to bits!

      • omo… i kinda feel depressed remembering jihoo again. i cried a river for him on bof. T_T and here i am again, the same old story *sigh* but am still hoping for that surprise at the end to come. you are definitely correct, chingu… KJW’s charisma keeps us from ship jumping and i never will till this drama comes to end. FIGHTING!!!!

      • btw, i started watching sg last week in the absence of m3 ep 6, and i enjoyed it so much that i was able to finish ep 1 to 4 in just one sitting. LOL i just love everything of it… the cast, the dialogues, cinematography, and the story. and i find it ironic, i was having a good laugh but my mind kept on going back to KJW. waahahhh! i dunno, maybe am going crazy… i’m totally under his spell.

      • Hmmnnn..I somewhat agree on Jung In pulling another Jihoo act, however, what I like about him is I think he’ll be more agressive than Jihoo was. He’s going for it! He may act cool but I think he’s going to fight for Mae Ri until there’s no hope left.. ( don’t worry Jung In, maysengger, allenif and kittykat is here for you.. Kekekeke )
I just feel it after seeing how he grabbed Mae Ri and glared at Mu Gyul. ( one of my fave scenes!! )

        P. S.
On a side note.. I’m alsio following SG and it’s hilarious!! Me likes it too!!

      • @ kittykat ► whahahah! you’re watching SG too?! so happy to hear that… it’s really a very good show. i’m watching it as a relief for my impending heartache once m3 comes to end. *sigh* but i dunno if i will last till m3’s final episode coz this show is killing me softly.

@ oi ► welcome to the club!!!! 😀 so happy to meet someone on board KJW ship LOL at least when the ship is about to sink, i know i’ll not be alone. chingus mayssenger, kittykat, you and me will be merrily singing the national anthem “nobody but you”. ahahahhahahah!!!!

      • @ allenif: yep.. i’m also hooked on it. it’s really funny in a different way. as for M3, this one pulls on my heartstrings.. aawwww…

      • I am the first mate on the JI and MR ship and I will not let it sink till the last ending episode proves me wrong…LOL

MG only kissed MR because 1. frustration 2. wanted to dig at JI, what better way then to kiss the one thing JI is trying to pursue and 3. it’s natural for him to kiss a girl and not think of how the girl will feel about it.

If you watch the other episodes you can see how his character acts with girls, doesn’t really mind their feelings, MR mentions it by saying in the 1st ep “it’s always skinship with this guy” (at least that’s what the subber said…lol).

There a way too many “typical” drama hints that MR might pick MG (MG grabbed her hand not her wrist, first to piggy back her) that I think the writers are purposely leading us down the wrong track.

I heard it’s not really following the manga, just using it as a platform, so I’m still holding out hope.

      • @Sparkle_me ► welcome aboard!!! 😀 so, if you’re the first mate, who’s gonna be the chief mate?! LOL

it somehow crossed to my mind too that the scriptwriters are just misleading us. but having been able to watch ep 7, seeing MG and MR now falling to each other, all my hopes went kaput. it was such a pity looking at JI now starting to fall for MR…….. how my heart was torn into pieces knowing it will be unreciprocated. had MR not met MG first, he’ll surely win her heart. and to salvage my own heart from further damage, i conditioned my mind for a MG-MR union at the end, unless they’ll give us a surprise ending. (gee!!! am i hoping again?) nevertheless, i’m for KJW all the way! 😀

  17. LOYALTY! This is the quality most admired by Mae-ri.

Thank you, Ockoala, for the recaps and your comments. I feel this drama is not getting the attention it deserves in S Korea because I see the numbers but maybe because it is so fresh and young. I try to read all the comments on every web page and I find very little loyalty among the fans who waver that she should choose MG or JI.
Thank you for letting me vent on your page otherwise I would explode I think.
    JI’s father (Yakuza???)

    • I thought I was the only one thinking along that line. That scene on the rooftop, with him flanked by black-suit guys? Creepy had just become creepier… O.o

  18. Thanks for the detailed ep 7 preview. i’m also an avid fan of the drama. was frustrated last week that ep 6 was not aired (waiting for the ep 6 eng sub). though can’t understand korean, i still watched the raw videos (almost understanding the flow based on their expressions and actions). but with your preview, finally pieced them together. almost jumped off my seat watching the face off with mae ri in between as well as ep 7 preview. whew! i’m at the edge of my seat. thanks again

  19. i just repeatedly watching the absolute insecure Mu Gyul scene and the preview of Jung In kissing Mae Ri hahaha!
from the looks of it and at the risk of sounding perv, i think it’s hotter and more passionate and realistic than with Mu Gyul omoooo love it to pieces!!!

  20. Thanks for the recap!! ^^

Things are really getting interesting. I just hope the charm of the drama won’t be washed out by the coming angst on later episodes.

  21. Wow you did a wonderful job on reiterating what happened! I especially loved the side notes you commented on. I felt the same way! Keep up the great work!!!

  22. “But to him, this may mean nothing (a passing fancy) or something much more (which is where I see Mu Gyul pushing her away due to his fear of commitment).”

Definitely agree there. Especially as that script they were reading (& the drama is so obviously following the same storyline) goes along those lines.

The only thing I’m really disappointed about is they teased us with the idea of a 4day trip for Mu Gyul & Mae Ri but I don’t see that ever happening. 🙁
