Prime Minister and I Hold Press Conference and Releases Awesome 8-minute Preview

If ever there is a drama that can change my lackluster impression of Yoona, it’s going to be Prime Minister and I or nothing else. So far I am already thisclose to being madly in love with her character and performance based on the trailers alone. So if I end up unimpressed with her still after this drama, she’s and I are not meant to be then. Otherwise I’m fairly certain I’m going to be writing warm and friendly posts about her in the next few weeks if my first impression is validated when the drama premieres next week. The cast of PM attended its press conference earlier this week and KBS released a long 8-minute preview that had me smiling like an idiot over the cute and funny not to mention with my heart thumping loudly over the fantastic chemistry between Yoona and Lee Bum Soo. I think they look good together, their characters are tickling all my romance bones with how they clash yet seem like they would push each other’s buttons in positive ways, and most importantly, this one feels like a fresh couple trope of the serious cantankerous prime minister with the young and fierce reporter. I don’t see any rich-poor tropes or family woes anywhere in sight. The supporting cast is also looking good, with Yoon Si Yoon as the prime minister’s aide and Yoona’s white knight, Chae Jung Ahn as the prime minister’s secretary with a crush on him, and Ryu Jin as the angry brother-in-law carrying a grudge over the death of his younger sister. Toss into the mix some cute kids and we’ve got the potential for some entertaining and high stakes dramatic adventures ahead. The press conference was a delight over how happy the cast appeared together, but Yoona was the standout with perfect make up and a lovely classy outfit in a less often seen color combination. If this drama is as good as it looks, maybe I’ll forgive KBS for making me suffer through the giant bipolar misstep that was Marry Him If You Dare.

8-minute long preview for Prime Minister and I:

[youtube id=”Dqc31bWwu8s” w=”625″ h=”445″]

The long preview sets up how the contract marriage falls into place. Nam Da Jung is a reporter sent to dig up scoop on the widower Prime Minister Kwon Yul’s love life. She pesters him until he agrees to an interview and then blacklists her as a stalker. One day she finds another reporter with his son and steps in to rescue him, but Kwon Yul mistakenly assumes she’s the unethical reporter targeting his kids for a scoop. Yul pushes Da Jung up against the pole to warn her to stay away from his kids but that seemingly romantic moment is captured on camera and splashed all over the newspapers. Angry brother-in-law Park Joon Ki uses the scandal to drum up support to get Kwon Yul to resign because of his scandalous behavior. Da Jung sees that he’s a great leader for the nation so steps in to extricate him from resignation by claiming their is a mutual romance. They start pretend dating until Kwon Yul can get re-confirmed, but during that time Da Jung learns that her dad has an inoperable brain tumor and 6 months to live. Dad’s greatest wish before dying is to marry Da Jung off and walk her down the aisle. Da Jung begs Kwon Yul if they can get married, thus upping their charade from fake relationship to fake marriage.

  1. Look at picture 8, Yoon Si Yoon can pass as Lee Bum Soo…They look the same…lol. Hopefully, this drama offers us something different to watch and please no tears 🙂

  2. She is not a very good actress, but damn, she’s likable. And she does act. Overacts at the time, but her face moves. More than I can say about many other actresses (and actors).
Fingers crossed this’ll be good. Haven’t enjoyed a drama since I hear your voice.
I’m among the minority who isn’t outraged with Mirae’s choice, but even I see the that it wasn’t a particularly good show.

    • LOL agreeed! This is also me with Suzy horrible acting skills, but they are likable so you tend to overlook it. Though there are sometimes where i get pissed off at their bad acting XD

      • Yoona is not nearly as bad as Suzy. And like Alixana said Yoona actually moves her face and (over)acts out emotions, while Suzy just stays there like a block of wood.

That said ,Suzy has time to improve , she is still young but she better hurry up. If she ruins one more project with her bad acting i might stop giving her any more chances.

The problem with Yoona is she always plays crappy written characters, that don`t let her show any potential. Hopefully ,Nam Da Jung will change that.

      • I don’t know why, but i was always fine with yoona (neither impressed nor disappointed but with suzy it was always a different story.
Perhaps it was because i liked her upon first impression (in Dream High) and then disappointed me in GFB.

    • Hopefully it was because of the cancelled Barefoot Friends where they ate and ate and ate. The show started off well, but became doldrum once they started the cooking episodes (the food looked scrumptious, but enough was enough).

    • And sure, dad wants you to get married. But you don’t get a normal son in law. But the Korean Prime Minister?

      * rofl * I like it. I like it a lot.

      • Well, if she is going to pick any husband to make her dad happy, why not the prime minister? LOL xD

  3. Hahaha i love how she beats the reporter with a mop. I am having a crush on her in these previews of the drama i hope the drama does good b/c it has one of my favorite casting.

  4. i really have to give my praise to yoona. i doubted on how she’s gonna pull off her rookie skills over a god-like actor such as lee bum soo and she just did! i think being paired up with lee bum soo helped her in order to step up her game in its vast. i think i like her now. the girl has huge potential, really. despite the age gap, their chemistry is overwhelming so far and i hope it continues. overall, the long preview is very hilarious and i’m loving nam da jung.

    • Its not her first time, she was paired w/ Kwon Sang Woo in Cinderella Man. She’s got quite an experience acting w/ really good actors!

  5. I am officially excited about this drama! From the preview it looks like it will be a fun one to watch. Really like the chemistry between Yoona and Lee Bum Soo.

  6. Love this preview , hopefully the drama stays amazing trough out all it`s run. I am one of those people who won`t judge this drama based on ratings, because some of the best korean dramas had worst rating and other way around( cough Heirs cough). And let`s be honest with Empress Ki having already 19% start advantage and MHIYD leaving only 4,1% ratings , it will be success if this drama gets anything above 10%.

So fighting Yoona and Lee Bum Soo, keep up the good work.

    • True. MBC is playing ‘dirty’ with its sageuk lineup… none of the other Monday/Tuesday stuff will have a chance next year with Empress Ki + Kim Young Hyun’s drama in the pipeline.

      • @rina
yep. empress ki good drama, but kim hyun joong’s drama, i ain’t too sure cuz them k-netizens keep sayin’ KHJ is bad actor and the other cast members aren’t that popular. hoprefully, his drama becomes big hit overseas. KHJ is a popular musician.

      • @XXXX
What @Rina was saying is that writer Kim young Hyun is up for mbc’s sageuk in 2014. I forgot what this new drama is called but it’s a Joseon era sageuk I believe. She’s a writer not KHJ the singer. I think she did tree with deep roots and other hits.

      • @lovedramas
I heard little bit bout kim yong hyun and new saeguk drama. onother hand, kpop singer kim hyun joong got a new drama comin’ out in 2014 too. called “Age of feeling”

      • @ Rina

You mean 파천황? Yup, MBC is slating it in April after Empress Ki, continuing in its nearly 2 years of running sageuk Mon-Tues. Not a bad idea but so far nothing has touched the ratings of Queen Seon Deok in that time slot in 2009. Nevertheless, MBC should own Mon-Tues in 2014 as well.

I am uber curious about 파천황. For those who don’t read hangul, the title is called Unprecedented/Never Before Seen. The PD is from QSD, but its the writing tandem of Kim Young Hyun + Park Sang Yeon that is getting the buzz since they adapted the novel Tree with Deep Roots into the critically acclaimed drama.

Aside from getting Han Suk Kyu for the big honcho role of Jeong Do Jeon the first Prime Minister of Joseon (a lock on a Daesang if you ask me), word is that Kim Nam Gil is rumored to be playing the other male lead Yi Bang Won, aka the founding King of Joseon (King Taejong of Joseon).

      • Weirdly enough, I saw some article about Jang Hyuk being tapped to play Lee Bang Won that was immediately refuted. So Kim Nam Gil is still on board?

Also, Miss Koala, have you heard any rumors about 앙큼한 돌싱녀? It’s supposed to be the follow up to Miss Korea and it sounds like it’s going to be a hoot.

  7. Ahhh don’t jinx it Koala! Let’s keep our expectations low!

Meanwhile, “I Need Romance 3” had its script reading and released a short teaser. 🙂

  8. Awesome-sauce! I really liked the 8 minute preview. I actually smiled and was giddy throughout the preview haha..I will definitely check it out. I just like the premise of the show more than anything. And the script/acting/camera angles seem so fresh and light-hearted (for now).

  9. I have to admit I’m pleasantly surprised after the preview. Yoona acting isn’t bad as everyone announce and i’m loving her character personality, so much punch and real adorable. I’m crossing fingers for this to be good, or at least decent, I really need a good rom com right now, with a nice dose of angst. So far the prev made me laugh and the scenes between Yoona and her father tugged a few of my heartstrings already. so yea, looking forwards to this one ^^

  10. I’m officially excited for this show after watching that preview! I love contract marriages but was doubtful about this pairing. However, after watching that, I’m now sold on their chemistry. I had no opinion about Yoona as I haven’t seen her in anything but I think I’m gonna like her here. And I love Lee Beom-soo after watching History of the Salaryman so, yeah, my excitement’s bubbling over. kyaaa!

  11. Yeah! If this drama stays on this trajectory, it will be a fun ride. I am liking what I’ve seen of Yoona’s acting in the preview. LBS is always good.

  12. Yoona said this character is the character tha is more alike to her real self, so it is easier and comfortable to act this character, so I think this is why she seems better and at easy on this drama, and make her character likeable for us? I mean I disliked her past works, but here I’m warming up to her!! And liking her character already!

The same could be said about Go Ara? She said NJ was made for her, since they are alike, and it seems GA is really comfortable palying NJ now and doing fine.

This could explain why Eunji from A1997 also was good in her first role, since it was just like her lol

  13. I’m a fan of YoonA and this early, I’m thanking you for giving her a chance as an actress and for the kind words. If, after watching few episodes and you’ve realized that it’s really not meant to be, I’ll still be grateful.

  14. hope prime minister and I have good story to watch.

just wondering…why does Yoona have to go into acting? she better at music than acting & she already popular as member of SNSD. they R so good & competitve, but still, they cannot beat Big Bang, Psy, or
    Bi Rain….Just saying.

    • SNSD are as much popular as Big Bang,Psy and Bi Rain maybe more popular than them. They are national girls group. Just b/c she is from a major popular group doesn’t mean she can’t go into acting. I have feeling that you really don’t like her or SNSD as group b/c the way you putting them down stating they are not as popular as those artists that you listed.

      • @Tae1
I like SNSD, but I prefer Big Bang. There ain’t no way snsd is “more popular than” psy and Big Bang.
Psy broke more records and bi rain made it to hollywood. did ya know Big Bang is most popular kpop group in Europe middle east and South America?
Remember, there still sexism around the world and countries still favor men over women.
Snsd popular as “national girl group” but as individuals like yoona, she not as popular as G-Dragon, Taeyang, TOP, Psy, Bi Rain.

      • no, yoona is more popular than GD, TOP or any big bang members in asia countries, especially in china, japan and south asia countries. she is like the most popular kpop idol individually in asia. and kpop is nugu in europe so what u said is really relevant (about kpop idols in europe). snsd and suju are the most popular kpop groups in asia. and dont put rain bi between snsd and big bang, he is the older generation.

      • @gaga
LOL! even tho Yoona is more popular than seungri and daesung, but she is NOT “more popular” than TOP, Taeyang, or especially G-Dragon, who obviously got more talent than her! G-Dragon got a bigger fanbase in asian countries than yoona.

Bi Rain is only 31 so he is in this generation. he’s a triple threat who can rap, dance, act. he already got 2 hollywood movies. apparently, people call him the kig of k-pop.

      • @flore
if SNSD’s album is “more superior” to PSY, then how come the man got more viewers on YouTube? he is more well known in North America too. Taeyang already got his own solo concerts in the united states. so i ain’t convinced that yoona is “more popular”.

from my 1st comment, i said Big Bang members more popular in Europe, middle east, south america. just read it again.

    • Lmao at this delusion. SNSD is more popular and has bigger fan base than all of them especially in Korea. You can see that by their physical album sales that are always superior to Big Bang and PSY.

And Yoona is definitely on the same level of popularity if not higher(especially in Korea, China and Japan) as GD,PSY,TOP,Bi Rain etc.And she is far more popular than Taeyang.

You need a reality check, the girl just broke the record for most rise donated by any female celebrity. That just speaks of her popularity.

      • @Tae1 @flore @anonymous
mind if i interrupt?…Big Bang’s facebook= almost 6.4 million followers. Psy got over 10,000,000 followers & SNSD = over 5.3 million. I, too, am not convinced girls’ generation is more famous than those guys. they might be equal but not better. did ya know T.O.P. movie “The Commitment” is bein’ broadcast in US theaters, europe, and otha places?

      • @gaga
yep, yoona is most popular kpop “female idol”, but i wouldn’t say “the most popular of all”.

    • They might not as popular as those guys internationally, but they’re up there. And yes, SNSD is pretty much one of the most popular celebrities in South Korea — as proven by topping most influential celebrity lists for the past 5 years (except last year, they’re runner up to Psy and his GS fame) and it’s the legit ones like Forbes, Sisa Journal, and Gallup survey, mind you. I mean BBC even listed them as the only celebrity on the 50 Korean Power Leaders… and Korean Tourism went as far as including SNSD as Hallyu representative in Korea’s Culture National Treasures brochure along with Korean’s food, alphabet, traditional house, and traditional clothing (even as a fan, I think this one is a bit too much heh).

SNSD is huger than you think, but yes, only as a group though. To answer your question, as popular as they are, realistically they’d need to have backup plans for their career and acting has always been an option for idols… which is rarely a good thing lol. Let’s be real, SNSD is the epitome for an idol group, they’re not here solely for the music.

      • @jkay
Yeah, SNSD indeed the most popular korean girl group, but not quite as popular as Big Bang and psy. That’s my point.

      • @flore & jkay..
We need to stop responding to this troll b/c no matter how much you explain this troll will still type the same thing over and over again. So it is waste of time. I am VIP and SONE but i will never go to another group project and insult them while praising my bias group. So lets wish Yoona the best so this drama will do good. Good looking out:)

    • because it’s her career? of course her idol activities are a priority, but it seems like her company was preparing for her to act already, not as an afterthought. yoona made her idol and acting debuts at around the same time, and helped gain more attention for her group through her drama roles, when they were not as popular, from korean audiences who do not pay attention to kpop.

  15. I’ve always loved Yoona as the Girls’ Generation member, not te actress. But all the stils are already making me love so much the drama. Her character Nam Ja Dung is a Total mess!!! But in a good way. It’s so loveable, she makes funny faces, what I like is that they’re not over-reacted so they don’t look ugly (helps that Yoona is very pretty). It was so funny when she pretends to be drunk and shakes her head. Also how Ja Dung and Kwon Yol (Prime Minister) are at the press conference dressed so nicely and look at each other with ugly faces.
And finally! A glimpse of the PM kids.
I haven’t loved a Rom-Com this year, there’s been good ones but not enough for me. Maybe PMAI will be my favourite.

    • I can’t wait to see more of the PM’s kids! This drama was originally promoted as Sounds of Music remake, right? I hope they’re really gonna make the best use of the kids characters as a plot device. *also, it’s a good call to alter the storyline from Sounds of Music into this whole contract marriage between crazy paparazza and a prime minister… it’s sooo much more interesting this way!

  16. Finally a worthy drama for me:). I have been in a drama slump ever since King Flower, hopefully this one won’t be a shit show like MHIYD.

    • Haha he was like this is your house and she was like it’s not here, i have moved. I found it funny that the prime minister is dragging her drunk around while the big bodyguard is carrying her purse like it’s precious puppy.

  17. Omg whoever decided to name Lee Bum Soo’s character Kwon Yul is a genius. Cos thats Yuri’s nickname, and Yoonyul is one of the most popular SNSD ships. LOLOL.
This show is shaping up to be surprisingly good. Honestly hope it doesn’t fail cos Lee Bum Soo has starred in 2 duds back to back.

  18. This looks more and more promising! It’s been awhile since the last time I get this excited about a rom-com. Mostly because the plot and everything shown in the preview is all I want for a rom-com. The comedy looks hilarious, the romance looks like it’ll be great! If the show stays true to the vibe that’s shown on the teaser, then it’s all good~
