I really enjoyed Hotel Del Luna but it wasn’t for the OTP relationship. I loved the characters separately that were leads Man Wol played by IU and Yeo Jin Goo’s character Goo Chan Sung. Each had wonderfully rich development arcs but not together as a couple, I found them better as non-romantic but loving best friends if you will. They lacked in the “Make Out Meter” which I should write about more, which is when romantic leads onscreen make me believe they are thisclose to making out in scenes. Yeo Jin Goo has transitioned successful to adult male lead, completed his military service, and K-ent is his oyster should he keep on building his resume. Up next may be jTBC drama Monster, just the title along gets my shivers up and not much is known about it other than its from the screenwriter of Mad Dog and the PD of Moments of 18. Just keep on growing breadth and depth, even stumbles are fine for someone so young and possessing years of experience already from a successful child actor career.
Is he already done with his MS? Or ockoala was referring to Yeo Seung Ho?
I had this question as well as soon as I read the article. Yeo Jin Goo hasn’t done his military service yet. It seems that ockoala is indeed mixing him up with Yoo Seung Ho
I hope he gets to be paired with somebody close to his age like Kim Yoo Jung, Kim So Hyun or Kim Hye Yoon or Sae Ron or Hyang Gi. Fresh psirs would be nice.
Kim Hye Yoon is below his level. So, no!
She’s talented and age-appropriate to be cast with a 97er. I don’t see what ‘level’ you need beyond that, it’s not Animal Crossing or Pokemon.
Popularity and establishment levels. Isn’t it obvious? He only fits with the top stars KYJ and KSH.
So Hyun’s busy, Yoo jung has a new show…Hye Yoon…if I hadn’t seen her amazing performance in a 5 minute cameo in Goblin, I would agree to this she is not good enough bandwagon. Hye Yoon changes voice, energy as her role demands it. She is more than good enough. Hyang gi too. Sae Ron is not tied to anything either at the moment, project wise. So, I hope and would be happy if any one of the 3 pick it up.
I would love to see Yeo Jin Goo reunite with either of his METS costars. KYj should be free after broadcast ends in august if this drama premieres in late 2020 so it’s possible for her and ksh doesn’t have any drama line up besides love alarm 2 which is almost done filming for Netflix. I’m also open for Kim Sae Ron, I didn’t like any of her projects but I liked her acting performances.
—I watched EY and Sky Castle, and it was really difficult for me to appreciate her acting. I didn’t like it. It’s too over the top. That 5 minute cameo in goblin was somewhat promising, but so maybe she should give melodrama a try? I don’t see her working well with Yeo Jin goo, but I could be wrong.
—Hyang Gi, I didn’t like her in her last drama but that’s the only work I seen of her, so I’m open.

Moment at 18 Kim Hyang Gi is a very good actress and she is only 19 years old. I wish they can act together. KYJ has a drama with JCW already so no.
HDL didn’t catapulted him to hallyu fame as much as it did to IU. I guess he lacks the hallyu actor aura that’s why he can’t managed to attract a lot of overseas fans. Further, among the METS child trio, he lags behind by miles in terms of overseas popularity as compared to KYJ and KSH.
Nevertheless, I still believe that he will be more popular if he will try Chungmuro. He is more of a movie actor as compared to a hallyu actor.
I agree with @Gem that a costar closer to his age would be a good idea if he’s to do a drama with any romance in it. He’s mad talented but has a similar issue to Yoo Seung Ho at the same age, ie he’s not very convincing in romantic roles/doesn’t always have good chemistry/sparks onscreen, possibly a greater comfort level (with a same or similar-aged acting partner) could help.
(I have not seen The Crowned Clown so can’t speak to that drama, this is after seeing his other works).
The CC is very good. He matches well with LSY. He excels in saguek. Watch it 🙂
@Candycane
Agreed that YJG was really good in The Crowned Clown, he had a bit of chemistry with his costar, nothing earth shattering, but a marked improvement from his other roles. Now I’m going to say something that might sound harsh, but the boy needs to fall in love in real life, and have a real life romantic relationship, so he can have genuine emotions to tap into to make his romantic roles more believable. Not every actor/actress needs to do this. Some can convincingly fake the emotions when acting and be believable, for example Kim So Hyun – she was so believable in Love Alarm. But YJG doesn’t seem to be that kind of actor. His romantic roles always turn out to have that “brotherly” vibe, even with much older, more mature and experienced actresses.
@Adal. Agree with you. I wonder what genre Monster is. If it is a thriller or sci-fi without any romance, YJG will be more than capable. You are not harsh. I am so glad to see all our sensible commentators are back and I can finally say something without getting bashed.
@adal I agree with you. I’m currently watching HDL and it seem like they have brother/sister or best friends chemistry. LDH, though minimal screen time, I can feel the chemistry between them.
And I agree again about KSH. The girl has never been in a relationship, but she’s so believable. Maybe it’s from watching a lot of movies— specially rom-com.
I’m so so excited! I’ve been waiting for a long time for his next project, the screenwriter also wrote the light in my eyes! I love that drama to bits!
—he hasn’t completed his military service yet.
—I don’t know why he’s not more popular because he’s very talented and has great charisma.
He is still far from PBG level after the success of CC and HDL. Hope he gets to avoid YSH drama choices.
I feel that yeo jin goo is not prioritize his popularity over work…dont know whether it is his own decisions or his management team..during hdl promotion in singapore when fans asked him whether he is popular..he humbly said no and judging from his instagram and twitter updates.. he only updates when there are important things or work related..nothing personal so maybe fans doesnt feel close enough with him and i agree wuth some comments that he is more into movie roles…thats why he also rarely take cf…the most numbers of cf he took is only 4 per year as compared to his peers…anyway he is talented
I loved Mad Dog with WDH! It was a great drama. So I really have big hopes for this drama. YGJ is really a great actor. I wasn’t totally convinced by the couple in Hotel del Luna but in CC he had a great chemistry with LSY and his acting was top notch!
I think YJG also has the desire to expand his fanbase in SK and overseas, but for one reason or another it just doesn’t happen yet. In HDL, he was upstaged by the chemistry and storyline of Lee Do Hyun and IU. It may have been the chemistry or lack off, and that on its own is a weakness. He still has plenty of chances in dramaland, but I do hope he also focus a bit more on his movie career as he has the gravity for it.
This reminds me of how Korean netizens used to label him as one of the actors with bad drama choices, alongside Yoo Seung Ho and Lee Hyun Woo. 2019 was definitely a turning point for him. I wish he was more popular, but I think it is not a priority for either him or his agency. He is a brilliant actor, but I agree with the comment above that he lacks romantic chemistry with his co-stars. This is in comparison to fellow former child actor Kim So Hyun who can generate chemistry with nearly of all her leads, regardless of age or acting experience. He is a brilliant actor though and still very young, so I’m sure he’ll develop on that in the future.
I do agree with you. On a side note, his romantic chemistry with Kim So Hyun remains unbeatable thus far. They’ve really set the bar high in I Miss You.
Ms Koala, I fully support your idea of writing more on Make Out Meter. Pretty please! This criteria should henceforth must be in every drama you mention in your playground. I watched HDL but I did not feel an iota of make out chemistry between IU and YJG. I ended up dropping HDL coz ghost fantasy not my cup of tea. However, I totally felt the fire burning between Park Bo Young and Jo Jung Suk in Oh My Ghost and I watched till the last and wanted more despite ghost theme not my cup of tea. Now that is the power of make out meter strength. The zero make out meter was dead flat in Hong sisters’ mega-hit Master’s Sun. Nothing, no hot lava inducing feeling between So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin but I got a super get a room feeling in Oh My Venus between him and Shin Min Ah. Going back further there was supreme make out meter high between veterans Jo In Sung and Ha Ji Won in that sensual hair shampoo commercial Mis En Scene. Sexiness is an attitude, one does not need to fall in love to make a kiss scene smouldering hot. I saw this when Seo In Guk kissed Jung Eun Ji 4 times in Reply 97, I keenly felt the sexual chemistry exploding all over despite both being newbies in acting with zero acting training. Man, one cannot fake this make out meter thingy, it’s just destiny or fate casting to bring 2 random people together and then kaboom, the bomb is set off.
Lol. Love this comment! Haha!!???
@Adal, thank you so much for your generous praise. I am in the middle of a k-drama slump so I went back to the old recaps made by Girlfriday and Javabeans in Dramabeans to relive the glory old days.
Have you seen YJG’s kissing scene in Potato Star? Sigh, if only Goo Chan-sung is as great as Hong Hye-sung (his character in Potato Star) in terms of kissing. He was 16 when he filmed that scene.
I am of belief that he is a really good actor. His chemistry is extremely special because he paid a lot of attention to his skills which satisfied the demand of the director instead of his emotion. Emotion cannot be weighed or measured, it is just someone experience.
