Song Joong Ki Offered Male Lead Role in Romance K-drama My Youth

I feel like it’s been so long since Song Joong Ki did a romance based drama or movie it almost felt like he wasn’t going back to that era in his career. But now it looks like while he enjoyed the successful genre jumping it looks like he will be doing a melo this year in 2024. He’s in talks for the K-drama My Youth but I think it’s a done deal as his agency is also producing the drama. With his name attached it immediately punts this drama to high profile but it’s also got the well known screenwriter of Run On which got strong audience and critic reviews when it aired. Not sure which network or platform will air the drama or when it will premiere, and of course if Song Joong Ki does confirm then the female lead will definitely be a hot commodity role.

Song Joong Ki Offered Male Lead Role in Romance K-drama My Youth — 42 Comments

  1. His latest movie is romance melo, so he hasn’t left the genre. I didn’t see any news that this new drama is a romance melo.

  2. SJK looks like forever young to me. I did not finish popular Vincenzo and Reborn Rich is just ok to me. But I used to like him a lot in his early works such as A Deep Rooted Tree, A Werewolf Boy, The Innocent Man, and Descendants of the Sun, most of which were produced before he married SHK. He was an actor with soul and depth back then. I somehow don’t get his acting post DoS even the latest dramas were still hits.

  3. Weird for a 38-year-old married father to be doing a drama titled “My Youth”—unless this is similar to “When My Love Blooms” that featured younger counterparts?

  4. If his agency are producing he wasn’t offered the role, he is casting himself in the lead role.

His acting in his last drama Reborn Rich was shockingly bad. I have never seen such poor acting him from him before. He also had zero chemistry with Shin Hyun Been so it will be interesting to see if he can work up some chemistry with the female lead for this new drama

    • TBH, I think he’s never been the most dynamic actor. He just got famous and gets to pick the best scripts.. I’ll watch anything he’s in basically because it’s probably going to be interesting and of good quality.

But Reborn Rich belonged to Lee Sung Min. That show totally fizzled out without him.

    • He was freakin’ electrifying in Vincenzo and has always had decent chemistry with his FLs until Shin Hyun Bin (who bizarrely only had 6 min of screen time per episode), so I’ll cut him slack for RR. That drama seems to be an outlier because he was fine in the noir movie he filmed after?

  5. He was really bad in Reborn Rich. Hopefully this new one will be better. I presume by title it my might be about some unhappiness how his life is considering he can’t exactly play a youth at his age.

  7. I started his last 3 dramas, was excited about it but got bored and dropped it. Lee Sung-min was dynamic in Reborn Rich…I watched the drama for him.

But rating wise, the dramas were doing well by SK standards? I noticed the rating increased afew times from Eps 1 to the end. Netflix also invested in marketing the drama, it did well in Netflix. It was quite highly ranked.

Even thru he no longer appeal to me but I am still interested in this upcoming project. I wonder if I will drop it midway.

  8. He was beyond awful in Reborn Rich, the pursed lips trying to act youthful was sooo cringey. I hope he brushed up on his acting.

  9. I hope his acting won’t be as bad as his last drama. He was so soulless. Poor screenwriters and director the supposed male lead just don’t want to act sincere. hope this writers luck on getting song joong ki as her male lead

  10. I thought I was the only one who didn’t get Vincenzo’s hype. Glad to see I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t finish and dropped the show. That’s not to say it was due to SJK alone but just felt nothing much after a few episodes. I say this as someone who watched Sungkyunkwan scandal

    • I think he does broody and stoic really well and enjoyed him in Vincenzo… upon reflecting more, I think it was the writing and characterization that let him down more in Reborn Rich rather than an issue with his acting skills. I liked the young Do Joon much, much more. Older Do Joon played by SJK really had no major obstacles to overcome. He just used his knowledge of future events to pick Soonyang apart along with a pretty unbelievable cast of accomplices/series of coincidences.

Lee Sung Min stole the whole show from SJK and the Seoul mayor uncle was great as well.

    • It’s was only you who realised after 2 years after Vincenzo released that it was bad. today sll overthe world song joong ki is known for Vincenzo only. Whole world watched that show. In all his recent international events everyone knows him as Vincenzo.

  11. I haven’t watched Reborn Rich so I can’t say about his acting there but why are people acting like he is a bad actor. He has always been a good actor. His acting in Arthdal Chronicle alone was too good. I see this all the time where if a good actor does a bad job in one drama, suddenly he is considered as the worst actor and if a bad actor does a decent job in one drama then he/she is considered as the best. Like there is no in between. Even if one is a good actor he/she can be miscast which I guess happened with him.

    • 100% correct observation. This happens in Korean industry alot. One bad actor doing one good role is placed on pedestal and one non hyped character done by good actor they become worst actor, critised, hated till hell.

I don’t think he was miscast, it’s just that not every character is not extravagant, charming, highlight of the script. It was simple character that’s all (reborn rich). Grandfather and do Jun’s characters were written and directed differently. That’s all.

Maybe people will realise this after some years like arthdal chronicles.

Even actors like Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t got recognition for the roles which he used to found most difficult to play.

      • The main reason why I don’t like Vincenzo and RR that much not bcos of his acting but bcos of the scripts and weak chemistry between him and his FLs. I still have very high expectation of SJK’s upcoming projects. He has been one of my favorite K actors for years.

    • He’s still one of the best actors out there IMO. But I also don’t appreciate Vincezo and Reborn Rich that much as many fans do. It’s a personal opinion like everyone has own preference. I did not watch Arthdal Chronicle I since it was said that the drama was badly written. I did watch AC II that I consider one of the best dramas I’ve watched recently. Perhaps I should give a shot to AC I and have my personal assessment.

    • Yess he is very agood actor but not in reborn rich. Even in vincenzo we can notice he is no longer as passionate as his previous project. The character is just has little arc not challenging enough to him. He is good but still no where near his nice guy era and werewolf boy era.

      • He was acting much better in his much younger years. It is obvious if people have watched werewolf boy. He has regressed definitely in my opinion.

  12. He was bad in Reborn Rich, overshadowed heavily by the rest of the cast, even the actor playing his younger version. Vincenzo was meh, nothing explosive. He is looking older to be playing something with a title “youth”. I’d say he isn’t picking right projects that will highlight him as an actor. Or did he lost his touch? He definitely lost a significant amount of his celebrity shine with the divorce. Not the actual divorce but how he handled it. Poor decision to approach it the way he did.

  13. No gaye to lee sung min, If lee sung min is better actor than SJK, lee sung min did around 4-5 projects last year then why he got recognition for reborn rich only. And acc to him in interview he got recognition because of reborn rich. And why all song joong ki’s work were in limelight.and got recognition all over the world!

    • Does SJK really get “recognition all over the world”? I heard he has failed auditions in overseas’ castings that his current wife is trying to assist him with… He may be known amongst K-drama fans or his ex-wife fans, but truly not all over the world. LOL.

      • It’s so funny to me how SJK tries to sell his wife as some big foreign star when calling her an F-lister would be generous. She starred in a popular Italian teen youth film 20 years ago but other than that her career never took off and the remainder of her career was small bit parts. She was more famous for being a socialite and dating a couple of rich guys. She can’t “help” SJK get overseas roles because she never managed to get a career going herself and doesn’t have any connections or credibility in the UK or US. Joong Ki’s English isn’t strong enough and his height and visuals do not appeal to Western casting directors. He doesn’t have a buzzy role that would bring him to the attention of international casting directors either so I’m not surprised his attempts to get into a English production have failed and he’s back to South Korea to produce a starring vehicle for himself.

      • I think it’s more to do with his english not being fluent enough. He is still like struggle reciting his line despite he is already pretty decent in real life. But your pronounciation need to be good. He can compliment or actout any hollywood actor. He can do manly roles well despite his appeareance too

      • Based on the interview where he spoke English, it’s a stretch to say it’s decent in real life. It’s broken English and heavily accented, which is understandable since he started learning as an adult. Do you mean complement and out act any Hollywood actor? That’s even a bigger stretch. He was out acted by a child actor in his last drama.

      • @guest : Yess it’ simple english but I don’t think his english is as embarassing as you implied. He use english in his promotion in singapore. and it’s passable. Or else people won’t led him doing the whole interview in english in public.

But reciting lines and means what you said is different matter.

Sorry, at his best he can outact any hollywood actor. It’s not like all hollywood actor is a good actor. just like in korea there is bad actor and there is good to great actor. so is hollywood.

      • It was pretty bad, but good on him for trying even though he was struggling. Simple English is passable for causal conversations, not formal interviews.

His acting has been regressing, rather than improving over the years. Even at his best, he never managed to get any acting awards so how is it at a level where he can out act any Hollywood actor. Stop embarrassing him.

      • @missjb

Anyone who tries speaking in a foreign language deserves praise but for work purposes his English is not good, sorry. You can’t even begin an acting career with that level. Take a look at other foreign actors, they have perfectly fluent English, often with no accent.

And saying he can outact any Hollywood actors is embarrassing. He can’t outact Koreans.

    • This is the dumbest comment I think I have ever read on this blog.

Of course a 50+ year old actor isn’t going to be as well known to fangirls as a younger heartthrob actor like Song Joong Ki! Lee Sung Min is one of the best Korean actors alive no matter whether fangirls know his name or not.

      • I actually enjoyed his role in Reborn Rich and played it well. With whatever was given to him. What most people don’t understand, actors are only going to be as good as the role given to them and as the person directing them. If his role was limited in that aspect, where did you want him to shine? He was there for the whole story-telling and he played his part well.

      • My last comment was referring to SJK. I also enjoyed Lee Sung Min’s acting and he really did justice to his role! It was meant to be explosive and he delivered!

  14. His best work is the “Arthdal Chronicles”. In “Reborn Rich” he was average. But he’s still better and more diverse than most other popular actors.

  15. He was very good in vincenzo, very dynamic. I heard he is very good in his recent movie “hopeless” too. His acting wasnt the best in reborn rich because he tried too hard to act much younger than his age and also he didnt have much to work on given the bland personality of the character, even in the novel jin do jun is overshadowed by the grandfather.

  16. People are just straight up lying when they say he was bad in Reborn Rich. He played a very sorted out, one dimensional character in it. Lee Sung Min had the scope to show his crazy skill and he did. He has done well in Vincenzo, in Archdal Chronicles, in that film he did about Space, Warewolf boy, Innocent Man etc. I am sure he’ll do well in whatever he does next.

    • Exactly. I don’t find him bad in reborn rich either. His role was this much only. And btw it was a pre-production show, if his acting was bad they had alot time to improve, but director said in one award taking speech that sjk was excellent as he was supposed to be.

I think role was the reason why he didn’t take this drama for 5 yrs.

Hopeless acting was tremendous so…his acting is not ditoriating. Not scared

I hope his next work will be more popular than previous ones.
