C-ent Believes Love Endures with Yang Zi and Fan Cheng Cheng Would Have Done Decent in Prior Years But Current Viewers are Becoming Pickier with Dramas

So it’s fascinating always to look deeper into why a project succeeds or fails. And for modern friendship and romance C-drama Love Endures airing on terrestrial Jiangsu TV and streaming platform Youku it’s not done as well as expected. Youku is marketing the heck out of it as best it can and there is viewership, so the issue is that it’s not as buzzy, well-received, or a breakout hit considering it stars Yang Zi and has lots of backing. The core reason is that the drama is just okay in story, male lead Fan Cheng Cheng hasn’t leveled up to carrying his weight in the drama, and the domestic C-viewers have grown pickier with shows. Insiders are saying Love Endures in prior years would have been a small hit, with the premiere ratings good and staying that that level through its run, albeit not going up during the airing. But now the premiere ratings are good but then went down during its run, that’s the core issue that viewers don’t have patience for dramas to get better and are quicker to nope out.

  1. Lol so many excuses for the drama not doing well. If it had done well, I bet the marketing direction will be the same old “It’s all because of husband-maker Yang Zi.”

  2. “Excuses” was also the exact wording popping up in my head when reading the post title the first time. There are always tons of defense to exonerate Yang Zi from unsatisfactory ratings. LOL. Her acting has been stale throughout the years. Why not just getting off the haughty horse to find ways of breakthrough?

    • It’s not just acting… screen play, storyline, costumes and settings are quite vanilla and predictable. Like as of they’ve been flogging a dead horse for a while now.

      Snooze fest.

      • @Sylvia

Yes. I have noticed that so many new dramas came out for the last three years or so, but there are very few good ones to watch. Wouldn’t it be nice if they can produce less, but much better quality dramas? Not same old boring stuff…. πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

  3. I’m watching this drama and I think it’s good. Story is good, there is enough mystery and character growth. Ost good. Even male lead FCC is pretty ok. I hardly feel the age gap. Of course, YZ is perfect and she has natural chemistry with just anybody. Not sure why it’s not a hit. I highly recommend this drama.

  4. Why not just call a spade, a spade and say that Yang Zi and the acting sucks instead of blaming the viewers for the failure of a drama? For all of Yang Zi’s noise marketing, the truth remains is that she’s hard to watch in modern dramas, she depends majorly on the charisma of the leading man to sell her modern dramas and if said leading man’s charisma is non existent, I would see why the viewers would lose patience and move on. The only modern drama she was watchable in as far as I’m concerned, was Go Go Squid, and I credit the success of that drama in a large part to Li Xian. I couldn’t stand her acting in any of her other modern dramas including Oath of Love, and even The Psychologist.

    • Beg to disagree. I watched Go Go Squid for YZ, not Li Xian. I almost dropped GGS midway thanks to LX, not YZ, but I stuck to the end. I think YZ’s acting style in GGS pretty decent and natural, and her visuals in that drama were also fine. To the opposite, LX as the ML in GGS, was difficult to watch. His jerky expressions and overbearing acting style aren’t up my alley and I found him persistently awkward to carry out love lines in idol dramas, although he’s decent playing with mundane and pedestrian acts in non-idol dramas. LX sucks in romance IMO. I wouldn’t have even checked GGS nor finished that overrated drama if not for YZ who I think actually saved the drama. On the other hand, I checked Oath of Love thanks to YZ, not being a fan of actor XZ back then. But it’s XZ’s charisma kept my eyes glued to the screen. LOL. I found Yang Zi a bit overacting and her makeup all over the top throughout OoL though. That being said, OoL was still a commercial success even the premiere was put off for a long while due to cyberbully XZ went through in 2020. OoL was the most viewed drama on Tencent platform in 2021. I wasn’t a fan of actor XZ back then but later realized how popular he was. I believe his fans contributed a lot to the ratings of OoL given how sorry they had been feeling for the mistreatment their idol had gone through. Per my observation, I’m convinced that OoL’s commercial success was largely credited to XZ, not YZ. XZ’s successive dramas also confirmed my believe that he himself can carry along a drama regardless of his costars’ visuals/acting skill or production quality.

So, your claim isn’t all valid. It’s your own subjective opinion at best. At least I don’t agree with you. LOL

      • You don’t agree with me, is your subjective opinion as well. I did say that YZ in GGS is the ONLY watchable modern romcom I’ve seen her in that I could stand to finish.

Others would say Li Xian rocks in the romcom department, he was good in Go Go Squid and even better in Meet Yourself where his acting, as well as Liu Yufei’s was natural and charming.

I have read many commenters who couldn’t stand Yang Zi in Oath of Love, especially due to how her character was written, but I digress. This is no criticism on your favorite, Xiao Zhan whose performance was good in the drama. You are entitled to your opinion of course, as I am to mine. Many viewers do not care for Yang Zi’s acting in modern dramas. Because it is easier for viewers to have a more candid and objective view of an actor’s performance in modern dramas – there are no pretty costumes, fewer beautiful cinematography, sets and cgi to distract the viewer from the actor’s/actress’s true performance. This is where the true test of an actor comes to play. There are other actresses that I admire as heck in costume dramas, but really can’t stand them in modern dramas, and one of them is Bai Lu (I know fans of hers will shoot me). I do love her, but have never been able to watch more than a few episodes of her modern dramas before just dropping it because her acting there just rankles.

  5. I have to watch this drama, will start after it ends. Then I can give me own opinion. I enjoy afew of of Yangzi’s dramas but not all. My favourite few of her projects will be Oath of LOve, Battle of Changsha and Ode to Joy, Go Go Squid.

I am looking forward to Best Choice Ever.

  6. The excuses are hilarious and all to avoid calling her drama a flop, which it is.

Let’s be honest, before her rabid fans flood in, the issue isn’t that her one drama didn’t do well. The issue is that her TV ratings are consistently terrible and that is the only real measurement of popularity. That is why it’s panic excuses time.

    • So how is that she is seemingly so popular despite her visuals if her TV ratings are consistently terrible? Does she come from a very wealthy background? Genuinely curious.

      • From what I know, she doesn’t come from a wealthy background. her dad was a firefighter and mum was stay at home mum. she started acting from a young age so she is well known in the industry. the funny fact is that they talk about how she has poor tv ratings, but she still gets tv to run her dramas, and I definitely know that they are not stupid enough to lose money time and time again bcs of her. I just found this blog and from what I observed Yang Zi has a lot of haters here, so I suggest you actually research on your own than believe whatever ppl say here

      • @Blip, yes, this blog have lots of Yang Zi haters… She is very popular with many locals in China. Many are fond of her…even many fellow artistes, all age group are fond of working with her. She is also popular with crew members.

I do agree her acting style is suitable for some genre but not all. She uses the natural acting style. Thus can be limited. But she does not deserve so much hate. to each its own…

I may not watch all her dramas but I am fond of her. Will watch what entertains me but will not b*tch about those that does not.

      • @Rina Take note of the helping verbs, “was” is past tense. Her fans claimed that the rumours of her dad owning water army companies are false, but C-netz still find it weird that most of her data seem to concentrate coming from a few specific counties/provinces.

      • She is not nearly as famous as her fans claim. If she were, she would have at least some success on TV lately, which she doesn’t. It’s easy to pump up numbers on the web, they are not real. That they mean nothing gets exposed the second she steps on television.

Her fans will defend her to death and find a million rationalisations why this or that. It’s always somebody else’s fault, except hers even though she is the leading actress.

The government is looking at all the water on the web and trying to see if it can be stopped so let’s wait to see what the future holds.

    • It’s not boring at all. It’s very well made. Good plot and heartwarming. Funny and thought provoking. Amazing drama. Not sure if we are even watching same drama… Or maybe u are just an anti-fan.
