Zhou Yi Ran and Bao Shang En Cast in Wuxia Period C-drama From the Same Novel Author as Love Like the Galaxy

A very promising new C-drama is being prepped and I’m loving the director and story and intrigued by the younger fresher face casting. The drama is adapted from the wuxia and romance novel titled Ten Years Lantern On A Rainy Night in the Martial Arts World (江湖夜雨十年灯) by the same novel writer Guan Xin Zhe Luan of Love Like the Galaxy and The Story of Minglan. Originally the drama was rumored to star Tan Jian Ci and Zhao Lu Si but that didn’t work out and it’s reportedly going to head into production soon with leads Zhou Yi Ran and Bao Shang En. The director of this project also directed the xianxia hit Love Between Fairy and Devil. All in all, a very solid production team.

  1. I know the dude, but who is she?

As with most solid productions, a lot will depend on how well the leads can carry their roles and if they have solid, believable chemistry.

  2. Well im gonna go check out the novel. I like the idea of giving younger newer actors these roles. Somtyms they surprise us. ZYR’s repertoire is good. The production team can be said as topnotch so hope all comes together to give us another good piece of wuxia.

    • I find ZYR to have a pretty recognizable face. Not to say he’s never come under the knife, but I think he looks pretty different from a lot of the other newbies. I thought he looked relatively unpolished in his character in When I Fly Towards You. Unlike the two guys in Legend of Shen Li, who recently posted a picture together and I had a hard time telling them apart lol (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GJa91kNasAAn9dw?format=jpg&name=large)

I’ve heard of the name Bao Shengen, but I’ve never seen her in anything. It’s hard to tell with photos since all the photo editors like to edit these poor girls into the same style.

      • I rather make such a flippant comment…lol 😂. Got myself in some trouble for it. But your observation is right. I feel some of the newbies share the same plastic surgeon…

      • @HL You should be free to make comments at your will. Don’t let the the crazies scare you off lol. Even if you think ZYR looks like every other young actor, that’s okay too. I obviously have a fond spot for him because of When I Fly Towards You, but I won’t be offended. Just sharing my perspective on him.

      • @Soph, I love and enjoy When I Fly towards you… I watched the drama 4times I think. I did not realised this is the main lead… He looks much more natural in the drama… Must be Editing, I dont seem to recognised him here. He has a edgy look about him in When I fly Towards You. But I never registered his name then. Thanks for reminding me.

      • @HL

Wow because of your comment I look at the photo again, I also didn’t recognize him as the one in WIFTY. I know his name is Zhou Yiran but, Is it the editing or just the hair? It feels like a different person.

      • @Yuhyi, isn’t it so!!! He looks different. This photo soften his bone structure and make him look bland. He really look better and more edgy in When I Fly Towards You. I enjoyed his voice in drama, unsure if it is him or not.

      • @Yuhyi @HL That is indeed Zhou Yiran in the picture. I think that’s from Legend of Zhuohua, where he plays some kind of royal. It’s the editing and excessive skin smoothing. These photo editors really need to calm down. Cat Tree, the director of WIFTY, also isn’t the type to use crazy skin smoothing filters in his dramas. Gives more realism in my opinion.

  4. Always enjoy watching ZYR’s performances. He’s such a promising young actors. But idk who the female lead is.

It will be great to see TJC and ZLS cuz i like both of them. But ZYR is a good choice too.

Will search for the eng trans of that novel. Im currently reading The Female General but im kinda confused with the character names in drama.

  5. These two are quite new actors but they are not newbies.
They’re working constantly with projects coming out every year since 2020 and each one have projects waiting to be released in 2024.
    They’re both decent actors.
I’ve seen people here complaining about seeing the same faces and names in every project even demanding new faces and names but when they come up they get negative.

    • Lol, you are true. It is good to see new faces…but the new faces do all look very similar these days. I really wish to see more natural looking new faces. Not just the super white faced and kid like young actors.

But that is just me making a quick comment. no offense intended.

      • Prolly most of them had gone under knives. It’s easy for them to get nowadays.

  6. I love seeing newbie faces if they do have the acting chops and just haven’t been very lucky in landing roles, or the right roles.
Otherwise it’s annoying when it’s an agency pushed newbie and they are taking roles to “practice their craft” onscreen and the audience is expected to sit them through the several years long process.

  7. I know nothing about the FL. I watched some of ZYR but never got to finish any of them. ZYR could act and has potential. It’s refreshing to see new faces (for me). I’ll count on that the script and the directing is as decent as writer’s and director’s prior works. Besides, it looks more promising cos this isn’t Xianxia that has been looking so hopeless for a long while.

  8. Bao Sheng En was the FL’s sister in Fake Till you Make It. She is not new, been in many shows as a teenager. I’m not a fan of her on screen, annoying amounts of sass, so good thing the production team is strong. Let’s see if this will be different from past dramas.
