The fandom fights are breaking out and could be way more interesting that then actual drama lol. The C-drama The First Frost started filming recently and this week released the first posters along with the confirmed casting of leads Bai Jing Ting and Zhang Ruo Nan. This drama is more buzzed about than usual because the story is from the sequel novel to Hidden Love which tells the romance of the brother character Sang Yan to the HL female lead Sang Zhi. Fans of the OG Sang Yan Victor Ma is already upset he’s not continuing the character he originated from the drama because he’s not good looking enough or popular enough to headline a C-drama. After that came the various actors fighting to land the role. It ultimately went to Bai Jing Ting and of course there is online fights about whether he’s good looking enough or is a good enough actor. On a side note, HL leads Zhao Lu Si and Chen Zhe Yuan will not be back in their roles even as cameos, instead the roles of Sang Zhi and Duan Jia Xu will be played by Zhang Miao Yi and Zhao Xiao Wen respectively.

And I don’t need to give him a chance, I have seen him in many dramas. He is good except in romance. Chemistry isn’t there.
Well I had mixed feelings when I first saw the casting and the leaked pictures of their filming. Ive read the novel several tyms and browsed thru the manga version too and never imagined BJT or ZRN as Sang Yan and Yi Fan. BJT and Victor Ma both have their own charm and I wouldnt say they are not good looking. Victor have this brusque mannerism and argumentative personality that I felt was very Sang Yan and that came out alot in HL story. In First Frost, Sang Yan is actually alot more patient and give alot of preferential gentle treatment to Yi Fan. So in some ways BJT may check the box. ZRN is very reserved and shy im her acting so Im not sure if we could get strong CP from them as a couple. YiFan is a poor soul who went tgru alot causing low self esteem. I have a vert soft spot for the story and Im keeping an open mind to this casting and this drama version.
Both Bai Jing Ting and Victor Ma are ugly. Do they lack handsome actors in China? Why do they like casting ugly actors as ML? Bai Jing Ting, Cheng Yi, Li Hong Yi and Liu Yu Ning are fugly as heck with their chinky eyes and yet keep getting casted as ML. Worst thing is these actors have a considerable amount of fans who are delusional and they will attack you for merely stating a fact that they just don’t have the looks of an ML.

No 1- China is huge with a lot of citizens with varied looks. I am not going to be a historian.
But no 1- racism is not cool. No 2 calling out a Chinese for looking Chinese is just nuts.
I actually value writing, acting, directing and wardrobe or set styling as aspects that makes me watch a drama.
Personal preference for looks are just personal preferences. We can’t make a stranger on Internet change their minds. There is so much plastic surgery going on in the drama industry you sure you know what a Chinese look like without plastic surgery? Especially if you call people ugly. I am happy you’re not their fan actually.

There are many people of many different race and culture which have this shape eye. From regional countries alone, we have Korean, Japanese, Thai, Filipino, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Burmese to name a few.
Since you have named actors you find ugly since they have specific shaped hooded eyes, does that mean anyone else in the world who has the same shape eye equally ugly? What happened to someone’s unique beauty especially if they are born with their original face?
I’m sure the fans of these actors you named are defensive since they appreciate the hard work of the actor and their talent. They are not where they are being male leads from their looks alone. I for one see Cheng Yi and Liu Yi Ning as very talented. However, not every one of their roles speaks to me so I can chose whether or not to watch a drama. Liu Yi Nings voice is beautiful beyond words though so I would listen to his singing anytime.
So please, no more insulting the Chinese, anyone who is a beauty that you personally don’t appreciate or those of us who watch dramas or actors/actresses that have a differing preference from you. It is NOT cool!
I root Zhang Miao Yi as Sang Zhi more than ZLS. TBH, I really can’t stand ZLS as grown Sang Zhi in Hidden Love. The young actress even acted hundred times better.

I like Bai Jingting, I hadn’t realized people thought him bad at acting and not good looking enough. I probably will check out this drama when it comes out, but I was really disappointed that the original actor wasn’t coming back for the role (though I’m not surprised). It simply won’t feel like the same role, no matter how good Jingting is. Also, it was expected, but to have new actors playing the roles of beloved characters (that were really well-casted) is gonna attract a lot of hate for the actors and the comparisons will never end.
He is a good actor, I think that’s a majority opinion. His looks though are definitely a hit or miss for people. Imo he really doesn’t fit the male romantic lead.
I am not sure these 2 fit the characters. They are more cute than sexy. And I don’t even like Zhang Ruo Nan’s cute acting. It’s too try hard. But perhaps I will be surprised.
I do like Zhang Mao Yi and think she will be a great Sang Zhi. She’s adorable.
Aw welp! Victor Ma had quite impressive presence as OG Sang Yan. No wonder many HL fans protest against BJT who just doesn’t exude any bit of similar aura as VM at all. HL had a very simple plot and totally relied on the chemistry among the main cast including ZLS and VM to become a hit. It would be interesting to see if the OTP of this sequel can deliver strong chemistry as well. BJT has many fans, me not included. I have trouble getting his charm and acting. Although HL was one of very very very very very few C modern dramas I enjoyed, I’m not appealed to this sequel given the cast.

I think it might have been better just to have given it another name and forget the reference to Hidden Love. I absolutely loved Hidden Love it is still my No1 romance drama and I will say that one of the most enjoyable characters was the brother played by Victor Ma. I suppose we will just have to wait and see what we think after its release.
