So C-actress Zhao Li Ying filmed xianxia C-drama The Legend of Shen Li nearly two years ago and her decision to take another idol drama has paid off as it’s the biggest hit of 2024 so far, but of course the year is only 1/4 over so plenty more C-dramas are on deck. But for her, this is reportedly the last we will see of her in the idol drama (period, xianxia, or modern romance) production and she’s leaving on a high note with the success of Shen Li credited to her. Last year she was in Yunnan province filming a thriller revenge C-movie titled Tiger Wolf Road (虎狼之路) with top billed acclaimed actor Xiao Yang (肖央). In the movie, she plays a distraught mother on a quest to find her daughter after her husband sells their child to traffickers. Goodness does this scream award bait and also wow what an unconscionable thing to do I hope that husband dies a terrible death by the end of the movie. Zhao Li Ying is also likely to head to Cannes next month as the period murder mystery movie She Has No Name starring Zhang Zi Yi has been selected to show at the festival and C-ent is expecting all three female leads there including Yang Mi.
Idk whether she is gonna film another idol drama but your news is late. She has already finished filming this movie one year ago and is filming a sci-fi drama now.
I applaud her career plan. Time to stop filming idol dramas. Even though the latest Shen Li was claimed to be a hit, it is embarrassing to watch cos heavy makeup and filters applied to hide her and LGX’s aging looks was indubitable.

The Untamed has 7.6 but there are people who consider it art. It’s good and I liked it but it’s not the best C-drama I’ve seen. But it’s the first one I saw because of its incredible popularity.
I dont think she really need those heavy make-up and filters. Her skin and complexion looks good for her age… But I ahve just watched eps 1…I can see the filters she used.

The sad thing is is that this ‘move’ is not by choice. The entertainment industry is ageist and C-ent is even more scarily so. At 36 she’s too old to play the FL in these dramas that are usually barely out of their teens. It’s unfortunate that there are no better roles for older actresses other then evolving from FL to mother.
It’s a pity and I’m not even a ZLY fan. I used to think Korean drama industry was pretty ageist but in comparison to C-dramas there are so many more interesting major roles for actresses in their mid-late 30, 40s, 50s, even 60s in Korean dramas that aren’t just limited to playing the young protagonist’s mother.
I think it’s because kdrama industry had some of the biggest kdrama hallyu stars who had been superstars since the early 2000s all hit their 30s and 40s in the last decade. People got attached to them when there were only like 3 dramas to choose from on a given day. And not many of the actors/actresses today have the star power and sentimental attachment that actors in their late 30s, 40s, and 50s bring. Also, kdrama collaborations with netflix allowed them to take some “risks” with older actors.
I feel like the cdrama industry is missing that same sort of attachment that would get the industry thinking of ways to retain popular, aging actors. There is like a new cdrama every week, and there is a proliferation of platforms. A 40 episode series airs over the course of 3 weeks. How can people get attached? If this was a kdrama, 40 episodes means hanging out with the actors and characters for 5 months. For the average 16-episoder, it’s 2 months.

They have fans that used to be children and now in their 20s and above. Some of the actresses might started as child actors, but if we only include from the time they got famous, around 2005, up to now, 2024, fair to say they don’t have an exact 20 years of experience. So they won’t have fans liking them for 20 years long, but close to it.
Before their generation, Shui Ling was famous, she was in the industry longer, so she has even more fans, she has fans liking her for 34+ years. One of her recent drama is call “Marvelous Women”, she starred along Yang Rong and Zhang Huiwen. The show is way better than Story of Minglan a thousand times. It got zero marketing! Even the ZLY fans attack the show, making thick faces comparisons and say Minglan is better when it’s nowhere close. The reason of ZLY’s success is that nobody attacks her boring works, but she attacks other people’s works. In 2009, TVB also gave Sheren Tang who was in her 40s the chance to play a lead role in Rosy Business. Tien Niu got some opportunities from other productions as well.
It’s not that opportunities are little, some actresses refuse to get old, look old, and act old. Like ZLY, she bragged that she is super willing to look old unlike others, she dragged others down to become the best, but the moment a passerby took a picture because she came to film in a public area, her staffs act even bigger than the police and snatched people’s phones and searching through all their photos just to delete the photo they took of ZLY. I tend to watch more Korean dramas than Chinese- but isn’t she the actress who was in Boss and Me so many years back? She was really good in that. But what is happening with Hans Zhang? Is he now blacklisted because of the controversy when his drama was pulled from all the channels?
