The amount of time Deng Wei has not been on set (i.e. filming) is long enough for Zhang Ling He to do three dramas lol. That man rolls from set to set and good for him, as long as he doesn’t risk overexposure by doing different genres and roles then he’s always on the front line having projects airing to the public. It’s opposite situation right now for C-actor Deng Wei, I wrote a few months ago that his long break from his last filmed drama Love of the Divine Tree is his agency’s making, pitching him as A-list and turning down many projects it deems not good enough for Deng Wei, demanding a A-list salary, and also demanding that his leading lady be A-list. So the dramas his agency wants is not offered to him and its turning down the dramas that are offered as not good enough, sounds like a catch-22. Now his fandom has truly gotten fed up and last week got upset and lodged a protest with his agency, which tried to placate by saying it’s currently in talks for his next project which is a very big one. But industry insiders say there is no such project and things will come to a head soon when his fandom realizes it in time.
The agency is not helping him at all…. even zhang wan yi already aired two shows….most of the recent C-ent shows are female centric from the adapted novels so it’s hard to get a male-main protagonist show.
It not like he can’t get a male lead show for he can because c ent produce a whole lot of shows in a year but is it the male lead show he is looking for and besides investors are trying to be smart now because of how c ent have performed poorly recently, n he is yet to actually really prove himself. Another one is the Billing issues where the fans are causing problems with it to this popular stars.
I first noticed him in Miss the Dragon. After a few supporting roles, I thought his nuanced acting in Lost You Forever was good.
So whatever the reason is, I hope his agency gets him some good roles soon coz there are other plenty of talents out there.
The growing dissonance between the actual status and what fans want to believe is already getting ridiculous. DW actual status in the industry is still a beginner/newbie yet his agency tried to market him as the ‘next big thing’ by sending red and black-marketing drafts comparing him to c-ent top actor or to other 95-liner actors.
Then DW newly form fan group get brainwashed about his false standing spiraling to extreme delusions that ricochet back to DW who is still ‘picking foot’ at home 8 months after his supposed to be popularity ‘explosion’.
Most of his fans get upset that ZWY and TJC are both occupied with different projects but these two have already good resources esp. ZWY even before LYF 1 & 2. Their resources did not skyrocket because of the drama at all. LYF was just another project for them but that’s not the case for DW.
DW and his agency burned too much money in all-types of marketing during airing of LYF 1 yet the drama came short in opening new resources for him. LYF 1 did not do well as Ashes of Love that transformed YZ, DL and LXY careers. And no one even remembers that LYF 2 aired.
Although Xu Kai and Zhang Linghe always get ridiculed from jumping from one project to another and airing 3 to 4 dramas per year. But imo this is much better than waiting. Not filming means no new project, viewers and fans got nothing to look forward in the future.
If any of your idol is not joining any new project for almost a year or more then maybe investors no longer find them viable or is considered to be high-risk with scandals that can explode anytime. High-risk artist usually get project only if they will sign risk-agreement (paying back the investors)

Please don’t post fake news about them wanting to take only big projects. He said in recent interview that he wanted to take a break and waiting for the right role. Some people might not see it as a good thing to wait but that’s his choice if he wants a break.
Lmao “right role”. Nobody believes that, please stop it’s embarrassing.
Nah. Young actresses and actors in c-ent don’t “want a break,” especially ones with only one notable work under their belt and lots of criticism on their acting…
It’s always grind grind grind (some even joke they take residence in Hengdian) until the offers dwindle…
The melon they sent out about him doing a big suspense drama has already gone up in smoke. People don’t like to be duped, so I understand the fans’ anger.
Whether it is the agency or DW himself to reject all available dramas remains to be seen.
There seems to be a lot of ego for very little talent so I can only hope their arrogance will be self-defeating. There are many better actors who will gladly take their chance with the dramas on offer.
The problem with him is that he thinks he is a major star. He isn’t.
The projects he is licking and going after are way beyond his league. Does he really think he can be in a movie with Liu Yifei? He is going after the roles that are reserved for real top dogs of cent.
By the time he faces reality that all the watering he did in the past two years did not in fact make him a star, he is going to lose what little he has.
C’mon. You’re just playing as a hater so I’m going to be playing as one too.
I’m sure every Chinese actor/actress pay for what you call as watering and fake data. Nothing is real. No real talent in that country so fake is what we all I get from there. These celebs over there pay tons of money to look very impressive with their numbers but in the real world nothing is real. Their performance as actors is always abysmal. The guy is not a good actor but the others are not too, I’m sure if DW had powerful people backing him up he would up there in the casting rumour of every drama like the others who have powerful people backing them up do. In China, you gotta have powerful people backing you up to go far anywhere.
@Jiao
There are plenty of good actors in China. No, not everyone uses water. For example Wang Kai has consistently really high TV ratings. They can’t be bought. People simply watch him because he is a good actor in good projects.
Deng Wei is a notorious water user, who also cannot act. He is on top of cent for watering, after Cheng Yi. He is not getting projects because there is an economic crisis everywhere, including China and producers that actually have good quality aren’t interested in people like him. He waters and he is a terrible actor.
He can always get work in lower tier projects. He doesn’t want to so he can remain unemployed.
@Jiao Hmm is telling the facts though. And nope, not every Chinese actor/actress waters their data, plus there’s also a matter of watering 1k vs 100k. But yes, having connections is very important in China and that goes the same for everywhere else. You build connections to further your career too, don’t you? The only thing that makes people angry is replacing a very talented person with no backings with some incompetent person with powerful backings, which is what C-ent has been doing recently. Deng Wei is, by no means, a talented actor so it’s no surprise that people aren’t supporting him.
He should follow Zhang Ling He’s footsteps and take on as many projects as possible to get his name out there and stay relevant. Eventually, he will land some major roles that will cement his status. As of right now he is not offering anything unique or memorable. Esthetically, he is not at Ju Jing Yi’s level to override mediocre (and plastic) acting. Maybe he should try variety shows to warm up his image.
He’s pretty sleep-inducing at variety shows too.
DW should look into short dramas. These days short dramas have better story line than dramas that have 40+ episodes and the storyline went downhill.
Dong Lan Xue.. I loved loved loved that drama. For once the female lead is not some (unrealistic) virgin, ditzy, pure, innocent flower type despite facing all the hardship. She was a badass and also older than the ML (which made sense in the story, since she was the mentor *no spoiler given beyond the synopsis*).
People are already starting to get tired of short dramas. Short dramas may have dramatic plot to catch people’s attention, but over time you’ll realise that they are like fast food, always use the same plot formula, cheap props, has no logic and full of bad acting.
I think the amount of short dramas produced is insane. Just this year alone, 500+. Even if some are good, there’s just too many to even make a splash. It’s no wonder people are getting tired. There’s only so much they can story tell before it all crashes down with redundancy. They’ll probably die down in a year or two.
DW and his fans should just face it, DW is not lead actor material. He would be better off taking supporting roles.
I dont see him as lead material too…
I never saw Yang Yang as lead material either and he’s top liuliang with tons of S+++projects.
Yang Yang is naturally and objectively handsome. Although his acting is lacking, it’s enough to be the male lead in idol dramas. He is also lucky enough to have debuted in the era where C-ent was short on good-looking young actors, and he did take plenty of supporting roles until he had garnered enough fans to convince investors to start giving him lead roles. Now, we’re at the era where investors are no longer brimming with money and prefer established actors who have enough fans and public recognition, hence Yang Yang is a safe choice and they are willing to give him S+ projects.
Meanwhile, DW has none of the above.
I can see why Yang Yang is lead material..I may not enjoy his dramas to watch till the end. But he has investment quality and he dramas so gather lots of interest.
It’s funny how such a break isn’t all that long in the kdrama industry, but is an absolute drought in the cdrama industry. He still has a drama or two waiting in the wings to air so I’m not too worried. If he can afford it and doesn’t care to become a traffic actor, why not take the break? I do hope he ends his break soon and take up something, because while he does have a bit of acting talent, it needs to be honed and worked on by working on projects and working with other actors and directors.
You wrote exactly what I wanted to.
While on his break, he can take some acting classes or workshop to keep up with his acting skills.. Since he can’t sing, dance or host he should brush up on his acting skills. I wouldn’t mind to see him. I a modern drama, I need something new from him.
No other reason he can’t get a lead role unless he is too picky. He’s good looking but nothing special so unless the project he is waiting for is really good and would instantly make him a top actor, he’s likely to flop and disappear from the scene soon.
He should learn to wang yibo. No drama/movie project for 2 years but do another project like a documentary and sporty stuff to stabilize his traffic status.
Wang Yibo is so different, he has such huge fanbase, he is very popular and has lots of endorsement incomes. He can take a break and focus on his own projects.
Deng Wei is not in the same league at all. If DEng Wei takes a break now for 2yrs, he can say goodbye to his career…others young actors will fill his gap easily. He has yet to stabilise his foot in this industry. To be honest, I dont think he can reach Wang Yibo’s popularity…but who knows I could be proven wrong. Everything is unpredictable in life.
That is not that long of a long break in most other drama industries but the idol C-dramas industry is like fast food with actors often filming drama after drama with barely a couple of weeks in between so I can see why his fans are worried.
It’s a pity as this kind of frenzied attitude towards filming is why so many of these actors are stuck starring in umpteen mediocre run of the mill works rather than waiting for quality projects and scripts.
If either of you think Wang Yibo is taking an almost two years break voluntarily I have this awesome bridge to sell you. Cheap too!
