So K-movie land will have two movies the same year dealing with the same era of Joseon royal history, and the first to arrive is actually chronologically later in period than the later one that is premiering. 2026 has seen the first mega hit movie in years with The King’s Warden starring Yoo Hae Jin and Park Ji Hoon, with the latter playing deposed young Joseon King Danjong/Prince Nosan, and currently sitting at number three highest grossing and highest tickets sold movie of all time in South Korean with 14,75 million admissions. Later this year will see the premiere of Canvas of Blood starring Kim Nam Gil and Park Bo Gum, with the two playing brothers turned rivals for the Joseon throne, with Kim Nam Gil as Prince Suyang and Park Bo Gum as Prince Anpyeong. The former is the King that deposted Danjong and later had him killed in The King’s Warden. So now there is increased attention on Canvas of Blood in both good and bad ways. Honestly if the movie is good it will get its own chance to win at the box office regardless of how amazing The King’s Warden did.
