Chen Yao is the Female Lead Opposite Deng Wei in Director Guo Jing Ming’s Next Drama the Fantasy Romance Bai Yao Pu
Director and writer Guo Jing Ming has been doing a slew of xianxia or fantasy dramas in recent years and will be continuing in the same genre for his next one. I reported that Deng Wei was basically confirmed as the male lead for Bai Yao Pu (百妖谱 or Hundred Demon Manual) and for a while there were a lot of actresses being discussed for the female lead. This week the casting circuit is saying the female lead will be actress Chen Yao, and it’s close to being certain as the drama is slated to start production this summer. Guo Jing Ming loves visuals and mood more than substantive and I worry Deng Wei is now too far removed from his one big hit role in Lost You Forever and really needs a good drama to get him back on track and this may not deliver what he needs.
This animation has a big hit following. GJM has effed up a ton of his projects, but he better not eff this one up. It’ll go down in history as the next M. Night Shyamalan with The Avatar.
I think Chen Yao has the acting chops, and she can be spritely if needed, but when I picture Tao Yao, I’m not seeing Chen Yao. There’s not too much for ML to do, so whoever plays ML will be fine. If this works out for her, she’ll be hot on the market.
Deng Wei can’t act at all and she is a capital push. This is going to go so well lmao

I’ve had enough of GJM and his dramas which try to seem complex but the plot is just empty and hollow. At least this one won’t star his ugly fave Tian Jiarui.
Agreed! This is the main reason i skip GJM’s dramas. His series has great eye candy, but lacks substance in his plot. The soul of a drama isn’t visual fluff!
And yes, TJR does not have the looks of a ML

Glad to see Chen Yao getting lead roles after being sidelined for so long. Not fond of the director, but I hope at least Chen Yao gets something positive out from this.
