First Intriguing Poster and Promo of Nam Joo Hyuk for Netflix Supernatural Saguek Drama The East Palace
The success this month of K-drama Teach You a Lesson will definitely keep K-dramas higher on the Netflix recommended list for viewers and can only help for the platform’s next K-drama. That would be The East Palace (Dong Gong) a supernatural sageuk that has shades of The Joseon Exorcist except with ghosts instead of zombies, and also hopefully no inaccuracies and liberties taken with the historical backdrop haha. The drama stars Nam Joo Hyuk as a palace guard who can see and fights ghosts and Roh Yoon Seo as a palace maid who can hear spirits, and they team together to investigate strange occurrences in the East Palace. The drama arrives a month from now on July 17th but was filmed over a year and a half ago in late 2024 that I almost forgot about it until the promos arrived and I like the first look.

Not only have K-dramas been doing pretty well on Netflix, but Pursuit of Jade also opened doors for Cdramas to be more visible on the #1 streaming platform. I was genuinely surprised this week to see Ashes to Crown, starring Chen Duling and Zhou Yiran, climb to #7 on Netflix’s Global Top 10. The global success of PoJ makes perfect sense to me, but AtC? I’m really curious about what specific elements of this series are resonating so strongly with international viewers. AtC will be the 2nd Cdrama following PoJ to be on Netflix’s Global Top 10. PoJ is really a breakthrough for Cdrama.
I feel like Ashes to Crown just happened to be the next big, new cdrama added to the platform after Pursuit of Jade that sort of scratches the itch for strong female lead and political intrigue in a world bordering on fantasy, but no demons and no Guo Jingming’s loud directing.
As for East Palace: wow I can’t believe it took so long to air. I’m curious as to how Nam Joo=hyuk will do since I associate him more with modern dramas. I think Roh Yoon-seo is good and hasn’t had a prominent role in a while. It will also be her first sageuk. Plot seems right up my alley.
