iQiyi Releases Modern Romance C-drama Genius Girlfriend with Tian Xi Wei and Hu Yi Tian on August 2nd — 17 Comments

  1. He was still same boring wet rag in Blossom in Adversity, but it was more of a family drama than a romance drama so he didn’t detract too much from the drama for me.

  2. Txw is so cute and pretty. I just love her big dolly eyes. I’m not too into the ml or watched any of his dramas as the lead before but hopefully he Canale a fan of his.

  3. I feel like Tian Xiwei is bad at picking dramas. Other than New Life Begins and Pursuit of Jade, I have been unable to watch any of her dramas. This one is the same. Its really boring.

    • She likes strong FLs, so she picks dramas with them, even if the plot of the dramas are not so good. Before Pursuit of Jade she picked The The Days of Seclusion and Love, where FL is a general, but the drama stopped filming halfway due to insufficient funds. Her other modern drama, In Between, flopped too because it was too unconventional. Genius Girlfriend is also flopping because its really boring, but at least she gets to play a genius. Tbh its hard to be her fan because of her bad taste.

      • Hmm no wonder I’d never really heard of her before POJ. I didn’t know her past dramas were flops. That’s a shame, since she can act. But I guess there are really some actors who are like that–they choose a drama for the character and not for the commercial value.

      • I didn’t say she was in it. She and Liu Yuning were previously rumored for it in 2024. Her fans strongly protested against it because they hated the premise. The protest succeeded and the project was stopped for a year before it rebooted again in 2025 with Deng Wei and Li Wanda. And turns out the fans were right to protest.

      • @Bluey New Life Begins is a hit. But somehow didn’t manage to generate much buzz for the actors.

  4. I like it. It is so funny here and there and so endearing. Feels like a shoujo anime or manga with how it is filmed and portrayed. I know this might not be everyone’s cup of a tea but so far so good. The male lead is not the main focus though and everyone is highlighted which makes it more of nice watch. The main female is so cute I her genius personality.

    • I like it too, so far, am on episode 8 so still while they’re at school. Have been impressed with the fl in other stuff and think she’s doing a good job here. Of course the genius, low eq, full on quirky misfit would suit her.

As for the male lead, haven’t seen him in much but he fits the diffident, sensitive, adolescent in love with the genius but struggling with how to be worthy, well. Not sure how he’ll fare when it comes to playing the grown up version, haven’t got there yet.

  5. I feel that tian xi wei drama except for poj nothing had been worth watching till end. Even in poj she and zlh was looking so out of place like cosplayers but the story and cinematography with good support character did great for success. She really is only suited for certain roles like bubbly or else she seems so out of place in serious roles with her animated and douyin like visual overall. But i think she is using her recent hype drama as base to try all genre but it’s doesn’t seem to be working well. I hope she chooses role suitable for her acting range like school or idol dramas.
Hyt was just like a stone in blossom of adversity, I’ll have to admit the fl zjy literally carried the whole drama that he was basically invisible and didn’t matter at all.He is more suitable for 2nd lead roles than main lead for dramas.

    • I admire her courage to try different genres and not stick to her comfort zone which is historicals. But her fans just want her to take on bubbly roles, particularly the xianxia genre, which matches her appearance. However she dislikes them so she won’t do it. At least Born with Luck wasn’t so bad, even though she was kinda carried by the veteran cast.

      • I think that makes her a more interesting actress to me. Each performance is like “hey, I can do this too!” I feel like it’s a big ask to ask an actor to have more than 2 or 3 dramas that we’ll love, especially if they’re under 30. Even if they can sniff out a good script, maybe the director is not that good or the co-star ends up being miscast or if the costar is great, maybe the chemistry doesn’t sit right. Or maybe while the script is good, the role is not that appealing.

I did feel like Genius Girlfriend was an odd choice, but it does add variety to her resume. She hasn’t done a coming of age school drama in years. I wish I had liked Hu Yi Tian better.

      • True lol. The only exception was Zhao Liying. Almost all her earlier works were enjoyable to me. But nowadays there aren’t much good scripts anymore because most of the famous novels have been adapted and platforms are less willing to produce as many dramas as before.

Genius Girlfriend is probably Tian Xiwei’s last chance to do a school drama so she probably took it. Its a pity they didn’t make Lai Weiming or the actor who played her brother as the ML, because it looks like Hu Yitian is preventing alot of people from watching it (other than the boring plot). I wonder how did Hu Yitian get famous in the first place if his acting is so bad like what people said. Was he better in A Love So Beautiful?

  6. Tian Xi Wei and Wang Xing Yue in First Love was ok. Storyline is Abit predictable and bleh.. but acting wise for these two actors are ok.

    • Nah..TXW was ok in First Love, but WXY did not fit the role. His acting was pretty awkward and green in that drama, unlike in the Double.
