Award Winning K-drama Director Ahn Pan Seok Passes Away from Cancer Related Illness and Leaves Behind One Upcoming Drama Love Doctor with Kim So Hyun and Choo Young Woo
The bad news keeps coming from K-ent this week and this one makes me so sad as a long time K-drama viewer. Award winning and famed director Ahn Pan Seok has passed away at the age of 64 years old, from illness complications stemming from his lung cancer diagnosis last year. He’s one of the most lauded of the K-drama directors with works that include White Tower, Secret Love Affair, Something in the Rain (Pretty Noona Buys Me Food), One Spring Night, and the most recent The Art of Negotiation. His talent for directing is genuinely incredible when it hits the entire drama feels so lyrical and cohesive to watch. My personal fave is actually the slow and moody One Spring Night which remains much too underrated and to me is the better sibling piece to Something in the Rain. He leaves behind one fully completed filming K-drama the upcoming Love Doctor with Kim So Hyun and Choo Young Woo which is currently in post-production and slated to air in October. Thank you PD Ahn for all the amazing works directed over the span of a thirty-five year career.
Wow that is crazy that it was completed. Usually that is rare. Im sure those working in finalizing everything will be so emotional.
Apparently the director finished everything, filming completed in Feb end and editing finished in July and soon after he collapsed. He finalized everything beforehand because apparently this was his favourite project. Or that is what he said in the interviews he did last year. Now I’m curious what makes him like this drama so much and why he specifically chose it as his last project after receiving his lung cancer diagnosis. A true loss to the industry.
His direction has a distinct and recognizable signature, truly respectable. RIP.

His dramas are unforgettable! I like in particular Heard It Through The Grapevine and A Wife’s Credentials. One Spring Night is great too. There’re always insights into human behaviours and interactions – with 3-dimensional characters. It’s a loss but we are lucky to have the pleasure of watching and following his works.

Heard It Through the Grapevine was one of my all-time favourite dramas, I’m so sad to hear this news and it’s going to be so emotional to see his last work that he actually got the chance to complete. May he rest in peace, he’ll be remembered with a lot of respect by kdrama watchers <3

What a surprise that it was from a brain hemorrhage than the cancer. RIP. I’m glad he was able to finish editing his final work.
