Creeptastic K-drama Strangers From Hell Turns into a Thriller Bromance as the Worst Offender in Take 2 of the Japan-ification of K-drama Posters
I loved horror movies as a kid and teens, no thanks to older siblings that loved it and ergo it was on TV and forced upon me. But it was cool to develop that appetite because a good horror feels tingly, cathartic, and adds to the greater understanding of cinema and storytelling. Not everything is a feel good romance, yeah? Later on I lost that appetite much like my body old me “Oh Hells No, Beeyotch!” when I tried riding the biggest baddest roller coasters after my teen years and then it was hello contents of stomach meet the bush. But good horror also builds up the tension from the posters/teasers on and K-drama Strangers From Hell is one of the scariest for sure and did such a great job of creating and sustaining that creepy tension into full blown horror. Which is why it’s even more ridiculous and frankly offensive that the Japanese version poster for the DVD turns it into a thriller bromance, like two disparate dudes investigating the mystery of Room 303. I now think whomever was hired to create the Japanese version of these drama posters (1) never watched the drama, and (2) got one marching order – dumb it down so that any 5 year old would be attracted and want to watch. LOL. I would have thought WWW was love triangle drama and scarlet heart Ryeo as Goryo era F4 drama, if i hadn`t actually seen it
I found these posters so funny! They really got the same pattern for every drama even if the story are very different.
LOL! This is hilarious!!!
Now that I think about it, 20+ years ago when J-doramas were hot (before Hallyu hit) and VCDs and DVDs were how I consumed many of my series (yes, I have just revealed my *gasp* my old age), many of the j-dorama dvd/vcd box set covers were all very similar like this, in bright happy hues of pink, blue and more pink. And many of the series content were nothing like the mood the covers conveyed. And I have felt “conned” about buying & watching certain shows thinking it was a rosy and sweet Apple but turned out to be a bloody and demented Orange!
I laughed so hard reading this post, I guess 20 years later they are still employing the same graphic designer. ???
