Brocade Odyssey with Tan Song Yun and Zheng Ye Cheng Airs to Criticism on Stale Plot, Poor Directing, and Distracting AI Face Swap of Third Male Lead

Well, here’s another one that can be skipped, unless the reviews get better which is always a possibility. Earlier in the year another female lead becomes business head to save the family drama Blossoms in Adversity also premiered to poor reviews but really turned the tide as the drama went on. But for now Brocade Odyssey which premiered this past weekend is being hit with both mid view counts so far as well as broad criticism. The key feedback is that the story is stale and nothing is interesting other than throwing more and more setbacks on the female lead one after the other, female lead Tan Song Yun is called out for still having a baby face but looking more her age of 34 and not suitable to play a teen girl anymore, the directing has bad CGI and sets and costumes look Walmart level basic, and the AI face swap of the third male lead (due to OG actor’s scandal) takes one out of his scenes because it’s noticeably distracting. So there you have it, I watched two episodes and can’t say I disagree with any of the above feedback.

Brocade Odyssey with Tan Song Yun and Zheng Ye Cheng Airs to Criticism on Stale Plot, Poor Directing, and Distracting AI Face Swap of Third Male Lead — 21 Comments

  1. Ep 1 was not bad only because I was happy seeing them. But eps 2…it starts to crack for me. I really want Zheng Ye Cheng to get a good script with Tan Song Yun…but this sort of drama really need budget to do well. Otherwise, it looks tacky.

In this drama Tan Song Yun really looks her age for me. Which can mean, she did not used plastic surgery as other actress does, thus her looks is natural. But I don’t know for certain so don’t quote me.

  2. I haven’t started watching due to time constraints, can anyone tell me what is the CGI for? I couldn’t think of anything that needs CGI for this drama except for the AI face swap. Sigh, guess I will skip if the reviews didn’t get better.

  3. They even used cgi for landscape background..the scenery is good but because the cgi is bad so it quite distracting for eyes..
I try to watch for the ML..that I hope he can get his breakhtrough..but I agree that the directing and story is not strong enough..I get sleep while watching it..and drop it right away

    • It actually gets a bit more interesting as you said…. There are funny moments mixed with intrigue due to the obnoxious villains. But yes it seems their editing last minute to replace the actor with AI is making the story flow a bit awkward. It feels choppy in the first 5episodes but it picks up. Whoever directed it chose some bad child actors….there just was no chemistry and when it transitions to adults it just felt badly connected. The female and male lead are holding the story well though and it feels like it will be a bumpy ride for the leads because their are a lot of jerks in their path.

      • I have many cdrama with very good child actors…this drama has just chosen them based on looks. Not the kids fault to be honest, it is whoever who wants to use them. But there will be online discussions.

  4. The people on Douban are also saying ZYC is ugly and that man is far from ugly. I really wish people would stop taking what they say on there because 90 percent of the time it’s pure bias and not an actual review. I think the drama is fine; nothing extraordinary but its decent. Unfortunately for most of these dramas that are female-centric with business being the premise;they’re going to get overshadowed by Blossom of Adversity because it was done so well in that drama.

  5. The Double, costume drama with zero liulang nor traffic actor beat all of those big anticipated shows full of overhyped “big stars”, this year. Good !

    • Maybe the industry should take notes. Addictive plot, strong leads and 2nd leads with amazing chemistry, strong supporting cast, strong direction and beautiful cinematography. Two big stars really don’t need to be paired together. I’d rather have one star paired with an unknown if they have amazing chemistry.

  6. I kind of like this drama and don’t care that it doesn’t look like a ton of money was spent on it. Acting is good by main leads and I like the storylines that tell a little bit about dying and weaving.

  7. dont listen to the critics…..chinese critics is low class people who made comment on social media. And the media making it bigger. I watch the drama without reading the review, if i dont like it , then i drop it. If like it then continue.

    • I absolutely agreed with you who are these scums they do nothing but spewing negativity, Tan Songyun is superb, she looks way better teenager than many other older actresses,She has naturally glowing beauty no surgery or botox filler. I think its is great drama wait until White king arrives, Actual book is really good but they changed plots, also AI swap for 3d face swap was not that bad but it is downing the whole visual.I watched from my big screen Mac background scenery is gorgeous + music is beautiful. I really like her acting skills who cares if she looks like exactly teenage or not. TSY is an actress who can perfectly control various roles I like the chemistry between the handsome male actor and her.

    • Yes. Zhang Hao Wei. I don’t think he was officially cancelled, but someone apparently had a problem with him. The censors?

  8. Currently on ep 7, the story itself isnt that bad actually, but the CGI and cinematography are sooo bad, lmao. It’s typical Seven Tan’s drama, nothing new coming from her, but i kinda enjoy watching her chemistry with the ML. Now waiting for the 2nd lead because the actor is amazing as a villain. I hate him but feel bad for him.
