iQiyi Releases Investigative Period C-drama The Wanted Detective with Wang Xing Yue and Xiang Han Zhi
I am surprised to see this C-drama released right now as it was rumored to be a fall release but I guess iQiyi wants to strike while the interest in the investigative period genre is high following Coroner’s Diary. The platform today released The Wanted Detective starring Wang Xing Yue and Xiang Han Zhi where they play a married couple torn apart by a suspicious murderous spree and reunited to solve that mystery. Not going to hazard a guess as to whether this will be another hit for iQiyi, would rather that it be a well-made drama and worth watching as it kicks off the August month of new C-dramas.

Wang Xing Yue on screen again…Great, I like watching him.
It does pique my interest. Summer’s the time for all the mystery ghostly horror stories.
The hairdos looks a lot like they do in xianxia dramas to me..
I enjoyed CD (including music CD too lol) although the drama had incoherent and a bit messy edits and narratives in the last few eps. Now this leading couple of iQiyi are welled liked by me. The genre is totally up my street. C-ent is now smart to produce more stories in this genre in costume setting. I just don’t buy any investigative plots in the modern C dramas that are far subpar compared with K counterpart. Fine with costume dramas with all sorts of fantasy and mouth-opening elements. LOL.
Hopefully the script and the directing is good.
I’m back to rave about drama……’s ending theme song. LOL. It’s so cool to have rap and hip hop vibes for a costume thriller. It goes well and refreshing.
WXY is truly a very consistent young talent. His acting is solid and always convincing. The first 2 eps I’ve watched continue to pique my interest. I hope the plot development will be more coherent than CD that was perhaps messed up a bit through editing.
Im on ep 9. The first 4 episodes got me confused because the cases were overlapping. I prefer CD for the crime solved. After ep 7, it gets better tho.
The series is getting boring. The FL got a lot of screen time but she had very dull presence. The heroine was written one dimensional, and XHZ’s one-note acting did not help. Although I liked her in other dramas, she failed me in this drama. It just shows her limited acting chops. It’s a shame WXY’s role was reduced to a second fiddler. Neither script nor directing is as fun as Coroner’s Diary. The entertainment value is just not there. I’ve been disappointed at WXY’s dramas after the Double. Such a waste of his talent. I may be dropping this one very soon.
I caught up with all the episodes today, and have loved it! It is great that everyone on the team has a story and how it interconnects with the mysteries and overarching plot. If you are looking for a typical romance story or one lead, either male or female, this is not it. Love the cinematography, the pacing, the acting, and the writing. It’s nice to see a female lead who has other goals than love, love, love. She’s also the better martial artist, and though not as good as a detective as the ML who has a Sherlock Holmes vibe, she’s not dumb and is a solid detective. The second FL is also interesting and will keep you guessing. Friendship plays a role in this story also, and the relationship between frenenmies WXY and Deng Kai’s ‘peacock’ is fabulous.
