The Uncanny Counter 2 Remains Mired in 3-4% Ratings Through Episode 8 as Criticism Focuses on the Overly Cartoonish Execution

tvN weekend drama The Uncanny Counter 2 is only slated for 12-episodes and with this weekend through episode 8 with ratings in the 3-4% range it’s clear this is not the hit the first season was in 2021. The concern that male lead Jo Byung Kyu‘s bullying allegation with its unconclusive resolution would affect the ratings led to the current explanation for the ratings staying stagnant. Reportedly the plot is very childish and cartoonish and is actually the same criticism for the second half of the original drama, when the original screenwriter left and a new come came onboard. But the goodwill built up in the first part of the drama helped carry through to the end for that season but now it’s laid bare as something viewers find unsatisfying to watch. This is even more disappointing for the production as tvN paid extra to snatch it over from OCN and also loaded the second season with tons of recognizable to big name new antagonist roles. After this is Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun itself a second season so we shall have to see if that drama get a different reception.

  1. wow, this is a living example that not all kdrama with new season will thrive.

Attorney Woo team should be mindful of this case cuz it might happen to them. Plus, they kinda messed up the 2nd half of the drama.

  3. I think this drama would’ve done well enough with just being standalone. Which viewers still can view as such.

I also believe a part of why the drama isnt’t hitting the big ratings anymore is that it took too long to film and air the 2nd season. The momentum is over which is sad but it is what it is.

    • Imho, the time gap between the 1st and 2nd Season has little bearing on the current ratings. Anyone who wanted to catch up on Season 1 as a reminder could simply go back and re-watch the first season. Nor was it an issue with other dramas with multiple seasons like Stranger2. The problem with the low ratings has to do with the mediocre or bad script. Yes, I called it bad script even though I was excited to view Season 2 and eagerly anticipated it. But the script made a bad choice giving the bad guys all the power, episode after episode and making the core group look incompetent, clueless, and always making bad decisions. Those writing decisions wasn’t doing anything to help the current viewership. After watching yesterday’s episode, I decided to call it quits and I fully understand why other viewers would do so, as well.

  4. Indeed. I find the beginning of S1 ok.. getting draggy and stupid somewhere mid-end, but just Wana see the end of it. For S2, I just can’t get pass the first 10mins. Producers just never understood it’s not the big name actors who bring viewership but rather the entire package.. good script, good acting, good directing and editing. If one component or more is poor, they cannot expect another to compensate for it.. like expecting popular actors to carry a drama with poor script.

  5. This season is kinda hard to care because they chose this new relationship with the firefighter and his wife rather than a character we already knew in the first season. Of course, the baddies are very strong and the new one doesn’t need to learn about his powers when our heroes needed a lot of time of training.

The new member is not funny at all.

Not sure I will watch the whole season.

  6. Why TVN chose to stack with its weekend lineup this year with sequels to mediocre shows is beyond my grasp.

The pressure is probably on for Sword of Aramun to help TVN recover from the Uncanny Counter 2 fiasco; it should be able to take advantage of the upcoming programming lull in the other stations, or else it would be another embarrassment.

Meanwhile, Diva of the Desert Island will face heavy competition from My Happy Ending and The Goryeo-Khitan War on TV Chosun and KBS2.

  7. i think uncanny counter fans expected a romance between main lead characters. i saw a lot of post of disappointment on Facebook. they expected mun and hana to have romantic relationship even fron season 1. so i think it affects the viewers to get sick of it while waiting.
