Sometimes hearing an opinion validated feels reassuring because it means at least my aesthetic assessing ability works or at least sits with the majority. But towards C-actress Yang Chao Yue there is no feeling of assurance that what appears like every single viewer who has watched her in a drama thinks she’s the worst actress in like ever. The issues is that she keeps acting and it just ruins my excitement for any project she’s in whether the IP is good or her costar is a fave of mine. Her two big dramas of 2023, out of four total, in Love You Seven Times and Chong Zi were both duds and a lot of it due to her. And now the word out of C-ent is that she is for sure doing the period drama with Liu Yu Ning where he’s top billed male lead, it’s called Shu Juan Yi Meng and has the English title A Dream Within a Dream. She’s apparently clearing her schedule to start filming and I want her scheduled packed with anything else at this point so she can’t film. *criescriescries* I don’t know who is backing her but please just stop enabling her dream of being an actress.
During the promotional livestream of LYST, she was crying and “begging” viewers to at least try to watch the drama for the sake of the crews and her co stars.
I hope she takes lots of lots of acting lessons.
Where there is no talent no amount of acting lessons will help.
If her life’s dream is acting, she should pursue it, but like in any other profession, by starting small and working her way up.
It is really frustrating to see her ruining so many big production dramas and it is an insult to any decent actor who has to work with her.
She took something like a ten day course. Maybe 14 days. I am not joking. She got mocked up and down on Weibo and Douban.
But that should tell you how seriously she takes all this. It’s not her faul though, someone is giving her these roles even though everyone knows she is a talentless hack. That is the real problem.
I have to say that YCY is the only C actress whom the whole universe is agreed upon on how bad is she as an actress…haha
I have seen many those TikTok/DouYin budget mini dramas actresses who can act much much better than her.

On Angelababy, I have seen a few takes that they prefer the movie version of Love O2O so not quite everything she has acted in is a dud.

She’s those that are good in stills but not in motion. She would be good in modelling, cfs, mvs or in variety shows. I dont see her passion fot acting. When she join Produce 101, what she said sounds more like a girl from rural areas in poor conditions trying to make a living. So i felt she would accept whatever her company gets for her.
To be honest even when she did cameo for fomh, I can still see clearly how bad her acting is. It got worse on lyst with her having more screentime. Having read the two novel source and anticipating the adaptation, it felt like disaster. Ding yuxi was decent with his potrayal although the plot got butchered so it’s not that good either, but yang chaoyue acting just feels too fake. Even on the scene where she died in snow, I was looking forward to this scene when I read the novel, but her acting is really off. I can’t even cry. ☹️
Why is she in all these costume dramas? Isn’t it a bad idea to put her in money-making investments when she sux in them?
Put her in modern ones; at least I am less likely to watch those.

Many people here were pretty convinced that LYN has no backer but the same does not go for YCY? Both are from poor backgrounds and is there any validity on this whole backer thing? Like is there any evidence that this is a common practice in c-ent? I feel YCY should do more support roles first but it’s her agency pushing her maybe even without her will to keep doing main roles.
For ycy, she was supported by tencent, since she is one of the most famous graduate of tencent’s produce 101. But after her series of failure, the rumor is tencent gonna stop supporting her.
As for backer thing it’s usually people who keeps getting main role even before they’re famous or getting resources beyond their ability, but it’s still hard to conclude whether any artist have backer.
It’s not restricted to just main roles though, just that the ones who get main roles before they’re famous/beyond their ability are those who receive higher level of support from their backer(s). Having backers is not a big deal as it’s a type of connections, people only flare up when the artiste keeps getting main roles despite bad acting skills or he/she had committed immorality or crime to get those backings.
Does she have fans from her work outside of dramas? She still has a ton of weibo followers. I know she was discovered on one of those idol competition shows. But now, is she popular in variety shows or cfs or doing fashion influencing? Someone must think she’s a good investment. There is always some monetary calculation when casting. Or maybe someone wants the production to fail?
I don’t blame YCY. She’s just following what her management wants her to do. She comes from an impoverish background so strike while the iron is hot and make the money before the looks fade.

I’m talking about those popularity indices such as VLinkage drama ratings etc. I recall that both her dramas LYST and CZ mentioned in the blog were ranked in top 10 most popular dramas by VLinkage when they were aired. So who were watching her dramas if she’s so bad? LOL. Don’t label me as her fan though. I’m indifferent to her like many other C actresses whom I actually don’t consider better than her. But I’d like to challenge ppl to think why she continued to get leading roles if investors couldn’t milk anything out of her.

And as the other person said, maybe people want to watch the trainwreck happening, they probably heard how bad of an actress she is and they got curious. Kinda similar to Fifty Shades of Grey, pretty much everyone agrees it’s one of the worst movies to ever exist, but people are curious about how bad it is and also curious about the seggsy scenes, so many people watched it lol
YCY actually has a huge fanbase. She was in one of the early idol shows. She literally was a terrible singer and terrible dancer, she still came in third place. When they had their disbandment concert, she actually cried tears of joy celebrating that she didn’t have to sing and dance anymore. Her dedicated fanbase probably helped to prop up the stats too. This is exactly why people continue to hire traffic stars even if they don’t have talent.
Hope the director of the drama is good. A bad actor needs a good director and a great editor.
LYN has captured my imagination with his magnetic smoldering screen presence and striking face like from an ancient East Asian painting. In this age of globalization and plastic surgery with generic looking pretty actors in the entertainment business I find LYN’s looks fascinating. He gives me Lee JunKi vibes. I love ancient Asian culture and both LJK and LYN bring alive the glamor and thrill of the dashing heroes romancing the beauties of classic Asian novels like Romance of the Three Kingdoms etc.
Look, I like LYN very much, but to compare him with Lee Junki is sacrilege! 🤣🤣
And I am not even LJK’s fan…But he would never, ever be considered anything less than stunning looks-wise, plus he is a much better actor than LYN, at least for the time being (although I think LYN is rather good too and improving).
LJK is much more older and a seasoned actor with a lot of experience. I didn’t mean LYM is as good as LJK. I meant they have that same ‘ exotic’ north East Asian look. Both have long limbs and delicate features but very masculine aura. Both have deep attractive voice which is really a plus when you are an actor. If LMY works hard he can be as good as LJK. We will see. But there is no doubt he’s got a good screen presence. He needs to hone his skills. He seems to have a singing career too so it will be interesting to watch how he prioritizes.!. I hope more acting.
LJK was so interesting and unusual when he first came on the scene with the film The King’s clown. He was very feminine with delicate features but as he started maturing his features stayed delicate as jade but his aura was was totally masculine. Very fascinating actor to watch onscreen. LYN has that too. He can play the nice boy next door and also a lethal enforcer (TLB). I prefer him in costume dramas.

But there’s a lot of supporters for LYN, so he must be getting better. Ryan Ding hard carried LYST for YCY. Let’s see if LYN can do the same.
Joining in Nena and Coralie’s bandwagon. I like LYN and I don’t get why people were calling him ugly, but LJK is on a whole other level. Not everyone may appreciate his visuals (I do!), but his acting is undeniable. LYN is decent, but nowhere near that yet. Maybe in time!

Let’s be honest, C-ent is full of actresses just as bad as YCY. I’m not sure why she gets singled out so much. The same goes for actors. They all could use some acting lessons and time stuck in supporting roles. But C-ent is what it is.
I feel Korean directors don’t get the credit they deserve. Korea has really world class directors and cinematographers. Also script writers. This can make a huge difference in presenting not so great actors . The director can highlight the strengths of the actors and play down the flaws. Just changing the camera angle or editing can make the actor look better. China has less good drama directors but they have really started coming on their own since 2015. In a decade the Chinese will be as good as the Koreans or even exceed because of their huge population. Exciting times are ahead for fans of Chinese dramas.
“…as good as the Koreans or even exceed….” Sorry, I don’t see that happen in any time soon as long as the Chinese society and the culture maintain the same closed-mindedness. Scripts are the soul of drama. Good writing entails a great amount of creativity experimenting different ideas. I don’t think the current Chinese regime will tolerate that and any creative ideas may be easily stymied.
Surely China is a huge market and they may be self-content. But that’s it. It would be difficult for Cdrama to be as popular as Kdrama outside China.
@Jana, I agree to your comment on skilled directors and cinematographers but I like to stress this has come about only because US Netflix etc have invested in SK dramas and have trained many to that high standards, SK previous dramas were getting very stale…
However in Movie world, top Chinese/HK movie still leds ahead of SK…China/HK do not lack experience, expertise and knowledge to film great movies. Just in dramaland, China will struggle to grow due to too many interferences and Gov control.
But for script writing, I have to disagree… China have lots of amazing writers. I have read so many wonderful novels and scripts for plays. It is not the lack of good writers at all… It is the unsupportive Chinese regime as @Somebody mentioned. The good writers are no allowed to write good scripts without investors interference, GOV guidelines and capable artistes understanding and acting the characters. Instead of getting better and improving… China just wants its dramaland to keep to it current level…. They dont want a nation of too many independent thinkers… they want listeners and people to get on with their day to day life. Keep their life simple.
This lack of growth is not natural… it is just controlled and made to be so.
@HL Interesting comment on HK/China movies. Do you really feel Chinese/HK movies are on another level now? Because they feel more stale to me than anything, esp HK. I rarely watch movies in general because I find the emotional payoff too short, which is why I watch dramas instead. And I haven’t touched Cmovies at all (the only one I thought was overrated was that movie with Zhou Dong Yu and Jackson, just because the novel it was based on was so much better. And ofc the ending was edited due to gov’t interference.) Do you have any good recos?
As far as novels are concerned, I also feel K-novels are very well-written. They can’t really do comedy, though, but their plots/characters are novel and more out of the box than the C-novels I’ve read, although C-fiction are great with world-building and sometimes there are goldmines with the plot (China has a headstart with this resource funnel, because we already see the jump from novel to c-anime to c-drama). If Kdramas allow novel adaptation (they are doing that with K-webtoons now), I can see them ushering in a new era as well.
@HL, I feel like the golden era of HK film industry is over. All they ever produce nowadays are repetitive crime dramas. Occasionally, there’s something not related to crime or suspense, but those are now rare and far and few. How many White Storms do we need?
I do agree with everyone that censorship really hinders creativity, but there’s not much any one can do about it.

China’s top movies are are good level too. I am just comparing that to C-drama. I really dont think Gov is keen for that dram industry to push boundaries… I think they like to keep it simple for regular viewers.
Only in movies, they will support growth so they dont look bad overseas. I am aware it may sound strange with me saying so… But I have reasons to such reasoning. Eng is not my first language thus I may not be able to explain it very well.
I disagree China lack good scriptwriters…but the good writer are just not keen to work on dramas as they are not respected and their scrips are butchered to please investors, Gov regulations etc. Many good writers rather work elsewhere. I feel many good writers are demoralised.
