C-actor Hu Yi Tian Notches Another Small Hit with Blossoms in Adversity and Continues Streak of Airing Dramas with No Negativity Attached

So the Chinese are massively superstitious. In the production world, the filming start ceremonies are picked for auspicious days, the prayers are for smooth filming, and the red envelopes for good tidings. That’s why it’s totally true that stars with either bad news attached or seem to be around bad things do find it harder to get cast. The opposite is apparently true for C-actor Hu Yi Tian. After the small success of his last drama Blossoms in Adversity, credited to the good script and Zhang Jing Yi whole he just did his one note acting thing and didn’t hurt it, scripts are reportedly flowing his way because he’s now created a string of good tidings. Investors apparently see Hu Yi Tian as a good luck charm to dramas because he’s never been in a drama as lead or support that has been shelved or banned from airing (due to topical issues like BL stories or a cast member in legal trouble), and he’s also not created any negative press himself or his fandom during his drama airings. So in the industry now he’s seen as a lucky hire for a drama, which is funny because he’s such a limited actor but this explains why he keeps getting cast. If it’s a successful niche then good for him.

  1. If this was true, then why are so many trouble-prone idols with toxic fandoms still cast so frequently in high-level productions?
It can’t possibly be for their ‘acting skills’…
I get the impression that many producers/investors rather follow Oscar Wilde’s old adage that the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about.

  2. I think he is a safe choice for small projects but producers still want liuliangs. The worst thing for a celebrity is being forgettable. They are here to grab our attention, bad press is part of the job and sometimes good.i remenber he called Shen Yue plain, he likes prettier girls or something.Anyways he probably is second choice in many productions and the type of actor tp be always second billed for female centric dramas.

  3. I think his acting got better. For someone so skinny scenes of hum throwing punches were energetic and with force. I actually liked his performance and his chemistry with fl in blossoms in adversity. And I think the voice actor did a great job to elevate his performance.

    • lol it was his own voice in the drama. I wish he got dubbed though so there’s so emotion coming from him. his action scenes were not bad, maybe he should head down that route with more action / less emotional characters.

      • Really his own voice? Then that’s excellent. I feel the voice was clear, concise and shows his character. Sounds dubbed tho. Whilst everyone else except Myolie sounds more real, on site sort of voice.

  4. He shines with the right roles. He did his own voice work in Blossom in Adversity. I don’t speak Mandarin but I heard from native speakers that his diction was very good.

He was very good in Blossoms in Adversity and is brilliant in Men In Love, so he does well with the right scripts and in the right roles. He’s not versatile enough to do well if the conditions are not right for him, but if he has a good production and costars and a good script then he’s not bad at all.

  5. Whatever your talk is, if it does not result in roles, then you’re just talk/air. This guy is getting work and that’s what counts. Even if his acting range is limited, he could WOW in any one of these dramas that air, like Wang Yibo, then success is solidified, rather than just air.

  6. I enjoyed more of the how the family came together and let go of their biases throughout the drama. There was character development for many of the side characters like the younger sisters, and her other “moms”. I didn’t care too much for the romance in this one to be quite honest.

  7. If anything good said about this drama, the credit should more likely go to the FL instead. ZJY is a very decent actress, way better than most of her peers. This aside, all the irrelevant factors including ludicrous Chinese superstition with opening worshiping ceremonies are the reasons why they can’t produce quality dramas on par with their neighbor on the Korean Peninsula. I’d rather watch an interesting story on screen even with a lot of background noises behind the door than doze off of boring dramas with safe choices of cast. As a viewer, I’m only interested in what happens on screen and don’t care much about anything off screen. That’s their business, not mine. LOL.

  8. Zhang Jingyi hard carried this drama.

Can we please not invent narratives where this guy was anything but an obstacle?

  9. Zhang Jing yi actually wasn’t that good either Blossoms in Adversity, so many scenes with same expression. She has to thank casting director for casting this guy because she could have easily get buried if his male lead was more charismatic and better actor.

Overall BIA was a good drama because the main draw was the plot itself, not because of the acting from the leads. They were serviceable, but nothing memorable. In fact supporting casts especially Lu Yixiao was a better performer.
