Seolhyun Joins Gong Yoo and Song Hye Kyo in Their Upcoming Post-Korean War Era Period Drama Show Business
The powerhouse pairing of Gong Yoo and Song Hye Kyo in a K-drama is shaping up more and more and we have the first person to join the supporting cast. It’s idol turned actress Seolhyun as she has been cast in the drama titled Show Business. It’s from the PD of Coffee Prince and award winning screenwriter Noh Hee Kyung who has worked with Song Hye Kyo twice now first in The World We Live In and also That Winter, the Wind Blows. This drama is set in the post Korean War era when South Korea was developing quickly and shows the early rise of K-entertainment and will span a few decades.

UGH I really dont want Gong Yoo to do this. Please look for another male lead. So Ji Sub is free… I love GY so much and want him in a more fun and upbeat drama. Him and SHK may be amazing on paper, but paired with NHK in a 20 episode melo is so not my jam. I did not see World Within, but That Winter went in circles forever before it ended and still felt rushed. And the double icing to this meh cake is an idol actress who cant act joining the cast and its the blergh title… “Show Business” wtf?
We don’t know the details of the story or the final title yet, nothing it’s been 100 percent confirm about these drama. That Winter dramas seems to be an exception for these writer, it’s not even her original work but a remake of J-drama, the rests of her dramas seem to be slice of life/romance not dramatic stuff also it’s set in the entertaiment business which sounds it could be like Worlds Within which I don’t recall being melodramatic.
My issue is with the actor-actor-writer compatibility. Comedy brings out the best in GY and in turn he livens up a drama and makes it better than what the script initially presented… In a slice of life or melo it is unlikely for us to see that side of him and paired with SHK who is an ice queen, I just do not see it working… Prob I should give it more of a chance but my knee jerk reaction from day 1 has been no please no and now added with an idol actress its even more nothankyou.
This is a disappointing update. They couldn’t find an actual talented actress? She is one of the worst idol turned actress I have ever seen. Just talentless.
I was iffy on the drama previously but that photo of SHK and GY sold it for me. They would look so good together!! I can only hope NHK is aiming for more of an IOTL vibe.
I do appreciate Seolhyun’s willingness to step back and do supporting roles after already being a lead in some decently hyped dramas. Or maybe she had no choice in the matter. Tbh, I have not seen her in anything recent, but I hope she’s improved since Orange Marmalade as that was so many years ago. Lol if Suzy and Krystal can do it…
Expect SHK to play another ice princess. I would much prefer a pairing between GY and Han Hyo Joo. HHJ may not be that strong of an actress but she has very interesting role selection, from Happiness to Moving to Blood Free. Anyway, I am not a fan of NHK. His writings are pretty boring. I would love to see GY in Park Hae Young-penned drama.
I would love GY to pair up with HHJ or KTR. If he wants to work with someone close to his age KTH would be nice. But no way for Park Hae Young as a writer for GY. He wrote My Mister and My Liberation Notes? Those dramas are just depressing and the very reason I dont want him to do Show Business. That feel like trading one bad for another to me.
Now that the 2nd leads are starting to gt announced, practically it mns the leads confirmed already? Powerhouse pair if so. SHK finally wrking w/ sm1 in her age range again.
I’m happy with Seolhyun news! She did so well in Summer Strike as an exhausted girl who wants a break. ISW and her were super cute in their role of introvert.
It’s the same PD. I guess it’s why she was casted.
Oh it’s the same PD? That explains a lot about why she was cast. I was wondering how she was even on the consideration for a project like this given her track record.
She’s not bad. People are focused on Orange Marmelade, her first role. But she was good in other roles like My Country, The Killer’s Shopping List and in Summer Strike.
@Sayaris: I watched her in a drama with Nam Goong Min and she was garbage. I couldn’t even figure out what emotion she was trying to convey half the time: she would either completely overact or give absolutely nothing with a blank facial expression and mouth hanging open. She was supposed to have some unrequited love thing going on with NGM but they had zero chemistry and barely seemed to be acting in the same drama because she could not match him. It was insulting to see her talentless in a lead role purely because she is an idol when there were literally hundreds of actresses who would have done a much superior job.
Truthfully, I don’t know if I’ll like the story, but I will absolutely keep an open mind. I am excited about anything that has gong yoo. Song Hye kyo isn’t a favorite of mine, for I have seen at most 2 of her works, but I can appreciate her as a phenomenal actress and I recently read one of her shoot interviews and she truly impressed me by her answers. So yes I am willing to bet she’ll do great in her role in this drama. I don’t have the heart to crucify idol turned actresses/actors even though I can understand some of the frustrations of people concerning some of their acting, this is Because my favorite actress is an idol turned actress.Anyways I just hope this movie isn’t too serious or overly melodramatic. I don’t know how or where tale of the nine tailed is placed in genre, but I enjoyed it for not being overly heavy, it had just the right amount of lightness and heavyness that balanced out perfectly and was just my absolute cup of tea. Hoping this drama is like that too, because personally I can’t deal with overly heavy dramas and overly light ones. But I’ll keep an open mind, fighting!!
I liked Worlds Within . SHK must be the muse of NoH Hee Kyung . Not hoping for much but i ‘m still open minded .
I really cannot get behind NHK’s writing. Worlds Within was a flop and I fell asleep multiple times trying to watch Our Blues. Her writing and pacing are just not my cup of tea. Being a Gong Yoo fan, I have mixed feelings about him being in it.
Worlds Within was the only one, after, all the dramas of the writer didn’t work for me . I never understood the hype about SHK but she may have something for being always casted in the great productions . She is for me as Isabelle Huppert, an ice queen , aside she never won the prestigious awards . I like GY but actors as Ji Sung, Nam Goong Min are more interesting for me .
SHK only got recognition as a serious actress after The Glory, where she was finally given a Baeksang after almost 30 years in the industry. But you’re right, she always gets cast by top writers and directors. Probably because she brings in the ratings thanks to her pretty face and popularity.
This is her 3rd team up with NHK–I hope the script is more interesting this time, since it’s something different (period piece).
Gong Yoo is one of the big names in K-ent that I’ve never found attractive. I couldn’t finish ANY of his hit dramas either. But I don’t dislike SHK and enjoyed some of her dramas a lot. I’ll give this a shot.
Many of the aforementioned good-looking South Korean actors and actresses are (above) average to me including Song Hye Kyo who doesn’t strike me as the great beauty folks were raving about. But I admire that she knows how to choose good projects for her career despite her limited acting range.
The success of a drama is a collective effort. For me, the most important attributes are writing and directing. Acting and visuals are next. This may explain why I enjoyed some of SHK’s works.
That’s also why in prestigious awards such as Oscar, best film and best director categories always grab more attention than best actor/actress. Professionals in the filming industry in the US, e.g, also have higher respect for film directors and producers than actors. It may be different in Asian showbiz though. It seems big name actors always got higher pay than anyone else in production teams and fans attribute the success of a drama to leading actors more than writer and director. It doesn’t work that way in the West, at least not in the US.
For me it also depends on whether I vibe with the actors or not. I, for example, can’t stand watching Lin Geng Xin. I don’t care if he acts well or if the writing and directing is good. So I don’t try to watch anything he’s in. Bad acting and worrisome appearances do distract me.
Hahaha.. I’m actually on the same page as you about LGX. He’s in my NO NO blacklist. LOL.
