SBS Fri-Sat Drama The Fiery Priest 2 Stays Steady in Ratings Unable to Match Higher Ratings of First Season

Whether it’s the zeitgeist moment passing or the new story simply isn’t as interesting, SBS was hoping for another hit with The Fiery Priest 2 and unfortunately it won’t be happening. The new season has aired 7-episodes so far and ratings remain steady between high 10% to 12% range. The original was up to 15% and more and ended with 22%. What’s also noticeable to the lack of buzz and talk with the drama, the initial excitement that it was coming just petered out once the drama aired. I think this takes Kim Nam Gil out of the SBS year end drama awards Daesang talk but the network is still the most successful of the big three networks in terms of drama hits this year.

SBS Fri-Sat Drama The Fiery Priest 2 Stays Steady in Ratings Unable to Match Higher Ratings of First Season — 26 Comments

  1. I didn’t check it out yet. The only K-drama on my plate is “When the phone rings”. the main actor yoo yeong seok is amazing. He always is.

Kim na Gil is an excellent actor. They should give him an award for the fiery priest Based on his acting, not rating of the show.

    • When The Phone Ring is utter, undiluted cr@ck. There was a good reason it was blowing up my bird app and TikTok.

Thanks to all the playground commentators last time to encouraged me to watch it. I am totally addicted.

    • I hate that I’m live watching When the Phone Rings because 2 episodes a week, then knowing about the two week hiatus in mid-December is making me crazy 🥺

      • Yep, it always happens with the dramas we are addicted to . Not to mention that others are going to suffer to with the string of end year ceremonies KBS,MBC,SBS entertainment, drama awards . So we will not be the only ones to suffer

    • I can’t agree more than that. Award is not all about ratings or the hype on popularity. It’s about the sole performance of the actor/ actress and he has nailed it with very diversified acting skills and capabilities. Especially all the tough martial-arts sparring and action parts he performed without any stuntman. Like it or not, he is one of the best actors for all genres which includes action in South Korea. And, wasn’t that the reason why he got Daesang in 2022? For the best acting and not highest ratings? He is definitely worthy of a nomination.

  2. It is true that there were too many random moments in the drama, which unexpectedly fails to deliver the joke. The main plot also falls short of the first season, the head priest death, his past before meeting him, that’s what made the first season interesting.

The supporting characters in season 2 also aren’t as interesting. also there are too many new characters that don’t have much importance to the plot

They tried to pull critical illness plot but it didn’t hit quite right too

    • I do agree that they may have tried to be different from the 1st season. But I do think if there wasn’t a comparison, it would actually do just fine. And that would mean the script writer did not do a great job in keeping the flow.

The casts will only try their best to follow as much as possible in due respect to the main writer and director. And more than often it’s either a miss or a hit. But I also know of dramas and movies with really bad plots and over-rated acting, yet skyrocketed in ratings just because it’s a taboo / hype or the usual lovey-dovey kind of works. I wouldn’t think that it’s fair to miss out the hard work of the cast if they did their part well. And awards are separated into acting and production. We should keep it that way.

    • @HL, thanks for the news. I almost went on another hiatus from Kdrama again cuz lack of recommendations. I’ve been watching some old stuff from Kdrama archives SLOWLY and spent more time on Taiwan news and US politics that have had more drama lately LOL.

      • I hope the dramas will deliver! I do follow politics quite abit, keeping up with world affairs. So I can have dinner conversations with my hubby and son, otherwise I end up just be a cook at home.

  3. Depending on your preference, Friday-Saturday shows are hard to choose between right now. Fiery Priest 2, Love your Enemy, and When the Phone Rings are all great watches.

  4. Hard to believe the same writer wrote season 2. I know it has Kim Jae-bum’s name on it but . . . File this one away under “failed K-drama sequels.” There’s plenty of other examples.

  5. I enjoyed season 1 immensely. But like others said, the beginning of season 2 started off a bit too chaotic and lacking driving focus to intrigue viewers as season 1 did. I temporarily quit after ep 2 but intend to pick up again later, just not in a mood to keep watching at this moment.

  6. I have watched Season 1 and am currently watching Season 2. I loved this season as well. I believe other dramas are receiving more attention due to social media platforms. If there were more short clips and highlights, it could have become as popular as the first season.
