Supernatural Investigative C-drama The Demon Hunter’s Romance with Allen Ren and Song Zu Er Breaks 9000 Heat Index in iQiyi within Days of Premiere Trending Towards Being a Hit
The reception so far for recently premiere iQiyi fantasy supernatural period C-drama The Demon Hunter’s Romance is like just praying for a C on a test and coming home with an A. The drama had been shelved for the past 18-months during Song Zu Er‘s tax scandal and all iQiyi wanted was to air it and recoup some cost, no one was even hoping it could be a hit. And yet in three days since its premiere all signs point towards that it could be a hit, with the drama breaking 9000 in heat index by the third day. The reviews have been solid too, critics are not mentioning Song Zu Er’s scandal and the feedback are that both leads are delivering in acting and chemistry with the drama being refreshing in delivering episodic supernatural mysteries to be solved. For once it’s a fantasy without all the heavy makeup and ornate costuming, and Allen Ren is getting the strong reviews he used to get back in the One and Only and Under the Power days. This looks to be the next much discussed C-drama at least for the next two weeks during its run picking up from where The Glory just left off.

It deserves it. Im glad that this drama is more focusing on the storyline and acting instead of heavy makeup. Not only our leads, the supporting actors are all good as well. Currently on the recent episode, one of the supporting actresses seriously delivers her creepy yet playful character well. Everytime she’s on screen, i feel goosebumps. Lol
Glad that this drama is doing well. Fighting!!!
What I really want to know is why don’t we get Kdramas with these fantasy themes? Dramas like Arang and the Magistrate, Alchemy of Souls are so rare in Kdrama. The historical fantasy elements of Goblin and Hotel Del Luna were far superior to the modern parts. Why can’t Kdramas invest more in it? China has proved time and again that this genre works well and is popular even among international audiences.
It has to do with budget, I suppose.
Chinese dramas have more budget? What about all the money Netflix and Disney is pouring into Korea? 😮
@Pip Netflix and Disney need to earn profits too. Koreans are known to prefer modern dramas, so sagueks tend not to do well in Korea, moreover fantasy sagueks. Why would they invest in more fantasy sagueks if they didn’t earn as much as compared to a modern romcom? Perhaps only if there’s some political agenda in the drama.
The Chinese on the other hand, have proven that there’s enough people watching xianxia genre and investors are confident they have a high chance of profiting from such dramas.
I hope this drama goes on to break 10k, it deserves it! I really like this type of “down-to-earth” style for fantasy genres where the main leads are humans instead of gods.
I am super loving #TheDemonHunter’sRomance! #RenJialun is so good in this and the story is really imaginative and very well written. I look forward to new episodes every day.
I have been watching it and very much enjoying it! Alan Ren is doing a good job and the behind the scene clips I’m seeing show a fun set, adding some dimension too. I’m glad its getting a good reception!
