SBS Fri-Sat Melodrama Our Movie with Namgoong Min and Jeon Yeo Bin Premieres and Faces Quick Second Episode Ratings Drop
Trends and statistics are important for a reason, it’s not always accurate but has predictor functionality. This weekend SBS premiered the prestige melodrama romance Our Movie on the Fri-Sat night time slot. Starring Namgoong Min and Jeon Yeo Bin, it was scheduled to succeed with a summer release and an award winning cast. The premiere got 4.2% which is low but the surprise is that the second episode dropped noticeably to 3.0%. Not an insignificant decline and one that doesn’t bode well for the drama, what with other current notable dramas rising incrementally in ratings. My guess is the plot is probably on the slower side and there is a terminal illness element so that could also be a detractor.

I liked it a lot but I guess terminal illness melodramas are not for everyone.
Terminal illness plot with a stoic and cynical male lead and a quirky too eager female lead is not for everyone. Jeon Yeobeen looks healthier than Namkoong Min and she’s supposed to be the dying one.
Lmao, I watched the first ep and I see what you mean. I know they are presenting the mental toll of the terminal illness more but JYB does look in the pink of health, compared to the very thin NKM.
When he was muscular in The Veil, folks were complaining about the “Hulk” look, saying it was stereotypical for men hahaha.
I read Namgoong Min have advice viewers to give it a chance and watch till ep5, if they still want to drop the drama after, he will take full responsibilities for the letdown. And even said the viewers can critic him online. I was surprised when I read that.
Hi @HL, i took a break from Kdramas and others for the first time in nearly 2 decades . I don’t know which one i should start to watch . If you can give me some advice , you’re welcome .
I was sad to see the closure of soompi forums , it used to be a gem for a long time i fan as me , it was another era !
@cahill, I was surprised by closure too. I used to be very active there. I understand how you feel.
I just watch 윤은혜의 EUNHYELOGIN today….she is just so girly…I like. And so neat!!!!
There have been afew interesting Kdramas like Nine Puzzles- murder mystery, Lovely Runner- Coming of age, Taxi Driver, Queen of Tears(Popular but I dont like male lead so I skip it), Undercover High School, Buried Hearts, Mercy For None, Good Boy, Good Partner..
Just afew I suggest with different genre. There are more Superheroes dramas too…but I only watched Moving.
Hi dear cahill and HL,
I am trying to fix the new post update/refresh and comment refresh issues, please be patient and sorry I can’t do more. I’m not tech savvy (*cries*) and need help on stuff like this.
@cahill, I didn’t even know Soompi forum is closing until you mentioned. But the site will stay right ?
My favorite one lately is unwritten soul starring park Bo young. There hasn’t been a lot of good kdramas these days but occasionally, there is one hit. I recommend that one. I also heard good things about Good boy so I will give that a try too.
What happen to soompi forums
@ HL, @Rolling stone , thanks for the suggestions , @Hl I will try Nine Puzzles it’s the kind that i like and like the actors too, aside Good boy ,i watched already the other ones and i really enjoyed Taxi driver season 1, @ Rolling stone i’ll try the one with Park Bo Young . Thanks for the feedback !
@Koala , thank you for keeping on posting, no offence ( i’m not meaning that you’re old !)but you are the only one left who makes me feel like part of the family of long time Ifans viewers !
@cahill, this site’s comment section is having so many issues…makes chatting troublesome sometimes.
Good to hear from you again. You make have taken a break from here recently.
@Koala No offence intended. Sorry to have to post “Testing” message as that is the only way I can read all messages.
I too am happy you are keeping this site live just as @cahill is
It’s been a long while that I totally fall for a drama so quickly and so deeply. Terminal illness plot line is surely not for everyone but Our Movie is tenderly and exquisitely done in its storytelling, music, directing and of course the acting of the two leads. NGM’s is one restrained performance but laying bare his character’s cynical and critical personality. JYB on the other hand is delivering a phenomenal performance here, bringing out the complicated emotional and physical journey her character is on. Watching them gradually fall in love will be such a treat, and I look forward to ugly crying for these too. I will be hurting so bad but so good!!
A rare flop for Namgoong Min. He hasn’t had a ratings failure since 2018’s Undateables.
for me this is must watch series.
NKM was an incredible actor.
ML and FL plays the role very well.
it is slow but i didn’t skip any parts.
Testing
Everytime JYB has a project it seems like it’s gonna be her big break but then nothing. She seemed poised for stardom after Vincenzo but her Netflix projects were duds. She joined an all-star cast movie that got her awards but her movie career hasn’t progressed beyond her 5 min role in Harbin and as Song Hye Gyo’s sidekick in Black Nuns. Now her drama is getting more attention because of Namgoong Min’s IG post reacting to tabloid trash that the work itself. Maybe her next project would be but it’s ENA so it’s more of a 1% drama unless it pulls off an Attorney Woo kind kind of buzz.
Chungmuro is dead. No one is having a proper movie career these days. KGE might be the only exception, but that too after such a sluggish movie streak. Even KTR hasn’t done any movies since Alienoid disaster. It’s too much to ask for a big break in movies especially amidst the dire industry crisis.
It’s not just in movies. She’s had opportunities in movies, OTT and free tv. It’s not just chungmuro. In fact regardless of chungmuro’s condition at the moment, her movie career after Vincenzo is slightly better than her drama career even if her roles are small. Our Movie is getting more press for Namgoong Min’s hurt ego than her own performance. She was the female lead in 2 Netflix dramas and both were duds that barely made an impact and are largely forgotten now.
Viewer preferences for K-dramas have changed considerably over the past two decades. In the 2000s, melodramatic productions like Stairway to Heaven, Winter Sonata, and Autumn in My Heart helped boost the Korean wave to the point that they were even released with dubbing in Hispanic countries (like Ecuador, where I’m from). But now, melodrama does not seem to cause any favorable emotions in the audience. Personally, I have no preference for any genre as long as it meets artistic parameters. I’m on episode four of Our Movie, and I’m enjoying it. Jeon Yeon-been and Namkoong Min’s performances are particularly touching among the entire cast.
P.S. Namkoong Min’s face looked familiar, and I didn’t know where I had seen him until I remembered it was in “Sketch” MV (by Hyomin). Lol.
this k-drama has everything to be popular. even though i am not a fan of melodrama, i have been able to appreciate the artistic values. if it had been broadcast on tvN as planned, it would have had a better audience due to the variety in viewer preferences compared to SBS TV.
